The reason it failed was because goku didn't have enough energy to complete the fusion, but they didn't know that. They later attempted it a second time but the fusion? Not only did it not work, it took the remaining energy goku had as debt and goku lost the ssj4 transformation entirely as a result.
Even in a semi-serious comic relief scene, I love how they show that not only is the technique not perfected (because they haven't had to use the technique in many years) but you don't even know who messed it up for a fact; maybe they both messed up
As much as I love this the reason they couldn't fuse was due to the fact that Goku had been fighting longer and his body was exhausted while Vegeta was still in good form
The funny thing is, is if you watch the afterimage versions of them Goku and vageta, both performed the fusion dance correctly but they said that vegeta's fingers weren't straight,but if you, watch the video and pause at the right moment, you can see that his, fingers, indeed did point out.
Hopefully they show more of the metamorans and get better at fusing techniques. It would be cool to see gogeta more, plus they wouldnt have to do the dance anymore
