I enjoyed your video though it brought some sad memories for me. My Dad was in Brushy Mountain in 1960 to 1961 I was only 12 years old when he was there. I can remember my Mom trying to make me go into visit him and I wouldn't even get out of the car. We lived in a Hollow over the mountain from BM and when they would have a prison break everyone would lock their doors .The police would come through with dogs looking for them. Thanks for the video I didn't know they had turned it into a tourist attraction. Though I don't think I will ever visit.

❤️💙💜 Thank you for the tour. My ex-Father-In-Law was the warden there back in the 1960’s. My ex-Mother-In-Law used to tell me stories of living in the warden’s home there. They had a trustee who cooked for them. All three of the boys got their hair cut by the prison barber. I wish I had learned more, but they are both gone now.

Thank you for showing this. I once knew a kind and gentle soul who was sentenced there for trading some marijuana for a stereo system. He used to talk about how rough it was there. He worked in the kitchen. I am glad I got to see the images to go with his stories. I can’t imagine how this man survived in there. Thank you again.

My husband who is now deceased did 9 years in prison there before we were married, we were married for 40 years and 5 months. The things he told me that happened. A lot of people couldn't have survived what he did. One thing he worked in the coal mines and they gave you a quote to get each day if not gotten you got beaten he did once he said but not again, he said he saw the blood run down into the top of their shoes when some got beaten. He was the chief cook for 3 years. They grew their own food too he said. He did hard time not as they do now.
He did time with James Earl Ray he said too. Said he was standing beside someone once who got stabbed 27 times and they lived but you couldn't say anything or you would be the next one.
His two brothers were there with him also, a 25-year sentence but they did 9 years and were on parole for 5 years. He never went back either like a lot do today. He did time in the hole once he said just so he could see one of his brothers he broke some rules is why he got in the hole but he got to see his brother.
He said the Warden told him he would let the prisoners have steaks once a week if he cut down on all the waste the farmers were coming and getting for their hogs to feed them and he did he said they didn't get any more food for their hogs and they got the steaks once a week.

This was great! I’ve always been fascinated by remnants of the past. I have heard of Brushy Mountain all my life. I had an uncle that used to say “y’all behave or you might get hauled off to Brushy Mountain!” I live near the TN/KY state line and I googled it to learn more. I didn’t know ‘The Green Mile’ was filmed there! Thanks for sharing, Patara, and Happy birthday, James! 🥰

We have a similar old state penitentiary in Ft. Madison, Iowa that used to have tours. Not sure if they still do. The state built a new age prison and now they get better treatment than seniors in nursing homes...quite sad. I think they should go back to the old one. And before anyone gets fussy I've had family have the privilege of staying in the old prison.

My Great Uncle was a prisoner there. He had shot a man for abusing his Sister. Two years later the man died. They had a speedy trial over near Crossville, TN. He hadn't been in there 9 months and died of Dysentery. He was buried in the Prison Cemetery. I don't know when it happened, but the Cemetery became overgrown with weeds. They mowed down the weeds and ALL if the MARKERS for the Graves of the Prisoners! My Great Uncle is still buried there, but only GOD knows where.
It was a BRUTAL place. That HOLE was probably the safest place in the building! You couldn't be raped, stabbed or killed while you were in the Hole!
Brushy Mountain Prison had a reputation, it wasn't a place to have fun. I'm glad that they have opened it up for people to see.
There was a large Farm associated with BMP just up the Road near Frozen Head State Park (Another beautiful place), they used to use the Prisoners to run it. They grew all the food or at least Most of it at the Farm. That had to be a blessing to all the prisoners that got to work there. Fresh air! The prisoners also learned how to make leather Purses and Wallets. There was good and bad things about the Prison.
It would be wonderful if they could locate the graves of the prisoners. You would have thought that they would have some sort of record of each burial. Thank you Both for the tour.
James we hope you enjoyed your Birthday! GOD bless
