"The core of magic" and "Treat it seriously as a property" Posted right around the time there's a goblin instagram secret lair and a comic sans secret lair, that shipped has sailed already.
Or to put it in other terms: Do you *REALLY* think there's that much difference between a potential Taylor Swift Secret Lair and the just-out-of-sale Hatsune Miku Secret Lair? Again don't be shooting the messenger, I'm just saying we're already within striking distance of a Swiftie drop.
Universes Beyond has already gone far beyond common sense with designs that don't resemble traditional cards. There's really no consistency anymore other than the mana symbols
@@ohnosmoarlulcatz Not even the mana symbols: have you seen some of the weird designs on some of those cards? Not only am I not able to read the card (And thus, not able to explain the card) but sometimes I can't even tell color identity or mana symbols on some of them.

@@revanliviar1239 You think? They are killing the game. That's why they HAVE to powercreep, and appeal to fans of other things to basically buy memorabilia for the other IP.
MTG is dying, the playerbase is dying, and that is why you see WOTC desperately trying to diversify. But the irony is that their attempts to diversify their appeal is what is watering down and killing Magic.
I am glad that I only support several creators that are tied to wotc but nothing else Hasbro is linked to.
So I can rest easier with the knowledge they can't get anymore of my money.
How to do a celeb tie in.
#1- find a celebrity that plays magic
#2- find out what deck they play
#3- make an alt art version of the deck themed around said celeb and sell “Taylor swifts deck” instead of just a Taylor swift card

There's crossovers within them - artifact equipments. microphone and dress for Swift and lab coat and scalpel for greys.
Many players I know have pulled back from MTG the last year or two, for a variety of reasons. Product quality, product overload / fatigue, WOTC's treatment of employees. If they come out with either of these, might be the final nail in the coffin...
One of the things my playgroup has done to keep interest, we built decks with only MTG IP cards and printings. We don't use any universe beyond or within. Might just be us, but those games are almost always the funnest of our game nights. 🤔

I REALLY hate to say this, but there is no magic in Magic anymore. I mock their game as IP: the Cashening or Commander: the Castening/ Commandening because of this fact. The Beyond stuff NEEDS to be it's own format- like Uncards; if they want the fandom on their side again, we need to see Magic as Magic and Beyond as Beyond.

@@mmartak Taylor Swift fans will buy it out, colonizing MTG. Real MTG fans will be appalled and disenfranchised. The NFL just did this, with Taylor dating a football player on the Chiefs, and they cut to her all the time during games. They even won the Super Bowl.
Hasbro would trade the MTG fanbase for the Taylor Swift fanbase in a SECOND. MTG will become the Taylor Swift Commemorative Card Collection. If it is just about money, which it is, then real Magic fans will lose.

But Universes Beyond/Secret Lairs will sell because they are using IPs that other people will recognize and those fans want to have. And if they are very powerful it doesn’t matter what it is because people will run it to win, not even knowing the characters or property they’re from.
The people who didn't want UB from the jump were warning about this, and they were ignored. If you supported the early UB products this is the world you wanted
I'm speaking as someone who was brought Into magic thanks to the DnD UB. But I get it. Id gladly go back and not have them do it. Even if it meant I never took the plunge in the first place. Honestly think it would be better.
There's a large difference between putting something like Warhammer 40k or DnD in Magic, and putting things that are not even representative of a closed-off, fictional setting concerned with internal consistency into the mtg universe. Walking Dead was the first offender, but not all UB are created equally. And I'm an opponent of them also - still, it is not fine to claim all of them are equally bad.
@@lVideoWatcherl I get what you're saying, but I think the more important line was when Hasbro reached for outside properties. The DnD set was weird, but tolerable. The LotR set had no business existing. I don't get the same negative feeling when I look at the Transformers cards or the Nerf card that I do when I look the WH40K or Dr. Who cards. The Hasbro stuff feels like an Easter Egg in a movie, while the others feel like Product Placement. I don't have any evidence to back my position beyond my own subjective feelings.
I liked (and bought) stuff from the first couple of UB sets.... but if we're going to take UB to it's logical extreme then yeah I see where you're coming from.
@@spamspammed5524 I mean, sure. But LotR is fantasy, at least the very same genre most of MtG is placed in. Transformers are gregious in comparison. Sure, LotR was also weird, no doubt, but mostly because the design choices _within_ the UB were abhorrent.
One day we'll all get excited for the Universes Beyond: Ravnica set. It'll be the first set from the world of Magic The Gathering in years.

For Taylor, swap that hexproof out for Prowess and each of her big song titles would be instants, sorceries and enchantments that have an effect relative to the lyrics

I think u may need to add a small advantage for the summoner like a cast bonus or emblem as for every 5 treasure created by anyone create a treasure and draw a card (maybe add to her cost to push her to 6. I think that would be so cool as a card

Major difference being that Post Malone is a MASSIVE mtg enthusiast. Out of all the well-known celebrities, he's the only one who deserves a card

I feel like if there's no whimsical/fantasy aspect to a collaborating property then it shouldn't be included. Post Malone got a card but he's an engaging & iconic staple in the community.
You have to also think about, he’s one of the largest and most influential magic players of the decade. He atleast has ties to Magic, I personally don’t like the idea of putting real people on the cards. Which in turn means I don’t necessarily agree with the post collab. But then again I can see why he would get a special homage. Having a Taylor swift specific collab would make no sense, other than monetarily.

I wonder how much staying power theses Beyond sets have for keeping the drawn on players. Do they stick around thus increasing the over all number of players or do they leave the game once the novelty ahs worn off? Either way it seems profitable for Hasbro. Also, how many long standing players are have been driven away by the current direction?

There's no difference. We crossed that bridge a long time ago. Can you imagine asking someone from 15 years ago that we'd have LOTR or Transformers crossovers? Once that happened, everything else is just a matter of time.
I am starting to believe that Magic players play Magic because they like the game. They just don't like Wizards of the Coast and that company's terrible decisions.
And also Magic the gathering is turning into Fortnite 2.0. Universes Beyond is over saturated and making Magic lose it's identity.

What's the difference between a Swift secret lair, and the Miku one?
I feel like a better direction is to possibly expand on older themes. Adding new cards to something like possibly the three kingdoms set. No reprints of old cards allowing collectors to keep thier valued cards. But this could be bias based on childhood nostalgia.
That Taylor swift card would be funny with a grafted Exoskeleton +2/+2 with infect just swinging around at the table. While also goading it so it can’t hit you. But on the bright side everyone gets 7 treasures… and 7 poison counters…

The universes beyond pandora box was opened already, everything is game now. If you're fine with LOTR, Doctor Who, Fallout, Assassin's Creed, why not these other goofy stuff. Either universes beyond should stop existing (which it should) or we will eventually have kanye west as a magic card.

I just really want magic and magic story back. Just sold a bunch of secret lair stuff that was beyond. Finally revisited Phyrexia and it ended in 2 months. Now we got a weird space baby with sneaky Jace. I’m done.
I am a huge Swift fan, and I would be profoundly disappointed if they did this. MAYBE a Secret Lair COULD work? But a UB product would be terrible. I really like the custom card design, btw
While I value immersion, I've felt Magic has always significantly had grey areas on that. We planeswalkers summoning a multitude of gods, and maybe losing to a bunch of rats. Also I suppose I have to be more open after Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty going very anime, and it turned out I liked that a lot. The power creep a way more important issue.
I watch an absurd amount of anime, but even i think the hatsune miku secret lair was a bit much.

MTG Universes Beyond idea: make cards from the “Magic the Gathering” IP prior to 2020
Mobile game (Final Fantasy War of the Visions) that I actually enjoyed was really successful. They wasted their 3rd year anniversary on a crossover. The crossover was to promote Addison Rae (an Instagram personality). 😐 literally companies think they can just force an overlap and all it does is bolster motivation to move away from their product.
I could get behind a Dune universes beyond.
Whatever it’s already ridiculous and it’s fine. My deck is all about frog monsters. Thalia and the Gitrog will put Taylor in her place

It’s tough when you’re playing it competitive and forced to buy the secret lair. If it happens it happens just hope they become more skins if it get to this

The issue is that there is no identity to the game anymore then. What does 'magic the gathering' mean when it is literally any genre, with any background, any setting, even real, historical or contemporary figures... it has absolutely no identity anymore and even the flavour explanation of planeswalkers battling one another makes no sense anymore. What, I am summoning Optimus Prime from a cartoon to battle Ezio who's from a video game and the third dude is putting doctors from a drama on the field?
I think there is no other game that compromises its core identity as much as mtg. At least I cannot think of any single one, because Fortnight has never been anything else but a mish-mash. Not even Monopoly is as bad as this, because that at least still generally stays within the context of property buying and selling. What does it mean for some doctors to appear in an mtg context? Absolutely nothing.
They had a huge influx of players through UB so far. But the biggest ones were Warhammer and especially LotR. Those specifically fit pretty well into MtG as Sci-Fi and Fantasy, so them applying that success to all UB's unthinkingly is a big mistake imo.
i think what u do is a much better idea than what the guy from the comment u showed had like just create your own fan made card that kinda gets your friend, familly or GF/BF in to magic and after that i think they will find cards on theyr own that they wanna play and theyl get in to magic on theyr own also if the person wants to keep making new fanmade commanders for theyr decks i dont thing that would be a problem too as long as the friend group are oke with that no?

Magic is known as one of the most complicated games in the world. That is the main barrier to entry, not the lore, characters, planes, or anything else. Being mana screwed, or flooded, or losing your creatures to removal, or being countered, all of these are off putting to noobs.
People will either like Magic and want to learn more, or they won't. You cannot trick them into liking what Magic is by dangling some shiny keys in their face. They will be distracted by the shiny keys, but as soon as that goes away, so does their interest.
P.S. WOTC needs to fire Mark Rosewater. Answering that question that way is corporate suicide. I know Hasbro would love to trade the entire Magic fanbase for a crumb of Taylor Swift's fanbase, but you don't say that openly!
LOL it a game, the end. When they started the other IP, we all knew that would open the door to anything and I mean anything. Not upset at any cards being added, I played for years and magic is not this holy game that Mitch(others thinks it is). Play the game the way you want, even make up new formats for your play group and go play some other games/activities. Hmm Taylor Swift commander with card around her songs interesting. Funny I think in the end people are/will move away from MTG is card overload and the cost has just gotten higher and higher and not IP stuff.

Dew is basically like gamer fuel; little letters, so descriptive, not the copyright product, and it comes in umpteen colors now, so I can almost imagine a simple set of Lands, in a Secret Lair, for each kind of mana, reflected in a different bottle of Dew, like Code Red, Whiteout, the regular kind, the blue one, etc. Still, make me look sexist, or not, I just don't, personally, see enough of what I ignorantly see as the typical MtG fan base having a big interest in Taylor Swift, or Grey's Anatomy, and them actually making a product out of it, and that before having Hasbro, till all are one, needing to get with her PR people, or their producers, and convince them THEY want to associate with hungry Hasbro, for a soulless product. Has TS ever claimed she plays Magic? Has ever played Magic? Taylor swift- when Taylor Swift enters (🙄), each creature loses indestructible and gains deathtouch until end of turn. Each creature deals combat damage to itself. This damage can’t be prevented in any way. Then, each player loses the remainder of their life points.
Look, I would love a from soft, Power Rangers, or even a Street Sharks/Extreme Dinosaurs set......but why these two things?
I would love a PR set or secret lair as Hasbro could potentially make a team or setting based around Magic. If we’re just looking at Precon we could have a Ranger deck, “Make My Monster Grow” deck (It focuses on bringing back creatures from the grave and giving them buffs), a Zord Voltron’s deck, and a Foot Soldier token swarm deck.
But unfortunately for what ever reason Hasbro seems to be allergic to nurturing the IPs they own. Who knows, it might change in the future but as of now any PR love is coming from just the Fans.

Flavor wise I’d want her as an esper mana cost, 1/3 body w/ menace. Whenever Taylor attacks search your library for an aura card w converted mana cost 2 or less, put it onto the battlefield, then shuffle. Whenever a creature your opponent controls is put into a graveyard, if it was enchanted create a treasure token. Tap: destroy target enchanted creature . Basically she’s an enchantress commander who goes “on tour” w attacks, taps to kill her enemies she enchanted to create “content”.
Lower powered zur, that gains more power as the game goes on. Menace means you need aura removal to attack through a board state. Asymmetric ability phrased so you retain value over time. “Auristocrat” Commander

If they make a Taylor swift secret lair. That will let me know it time to sell everything I have and never play mtg again. I started playing since 1993. And have tons of old cards. I have been debating whether to sell everything for a while now. This would just be the nail in the coffin for me. Truthfully, I would rather just see them undo the reserved list that make Taylor swift into a card.

Hatsune Miku is an anthropomorphic voice bank piece of software, Fallout is a post-apocalyptic alternate real world future, Wizards has been jumping this shark long before any mention of Taylor Swift or Gray's Anatomy. Magic has Transformers, My Little Pony, shotguns, blue jeans, space marines, Fortnite, Street Fighter, a timespace-bending police box, Post Malone, why would *this* be the thing that's gone too far?

Well, we are getting four separate Hatsune Miku Secret Lair drops, so I don't see why WotC wouldn't make a Taylor Swift Secret Lair. At the risk of drawing the aggro of the weebs, Miku is basically anime Taylor Swift at this point.

@shorewall Yes, I understand that there are key differences between the two, but at least from my perspective, they represent similar things in regards to Secret Lairs. That's all I'm getting at.
Taylor Swift should have been a 4-mana WURG planeswalker that enters with 2 loyalty. Her abilities should read as something like the following:
"If a non-Boyfriend source your opponents control would cause Taylor to lose loyalty counters or leave the battlefield, you may sacrifice a Boyfriend to prevent all damage and have Taylor phase out instead. When Taylor phases in, if you control no Boyfriends, create 12 gold tokens. (12 because she has 12 songs that were #1 hits at the time of this comment.)
+2: Create a 1/1 human Boyfriend creature token.
-3, Sacrifice a Boyfriend: Create a 0/1 Loyal Fan creature token with trample and vigilance. Whenever Loyal Fan attacks, it gets +X/+X where X is the total toughness of creatures the defending player controls."
This feels more thematic because she can only be hurt by boyfriends but getting new boyfriends also helps her get more loyal fans or lets her remove boyfriends from the picture for her benefit. 😂
they should just reprint Alpha already.

Lego has no lore. Magic was built on lore. If you stand for nothing, you will fall for anything.
Being too inclusive, in terms of IP, waters down the product, takes away it's identity, and drives off its core audience. If you think it can't happen, look at Star Wars, which went from a must see movie experience, to made for TV only, and the MCU, which couldn't last forever but has little interest from fans anymore.
