- Planting Red Osier Dogwood for deer is an easy, inexpensive way to enhance your hunting property. ROD provides great cover and browse for deer (especially in the winter) and is literally free if you have (or can find) an area to take cuttings. Red Osier Dogwood is about as good as it gets for us hunters and habitat gurus. But, you need to pay attention to a few key details to increase your cutting survival rate. I planted 700 cuttings last year with the idea that the deer wouldn't find them all. Unfortunately, we had a drought last summer and I doubt any of them lived. I'll try again this year, but hiding them among the honeysuckle bushes I cut will be part of my plan.

I’ve had a lot of success over the years using this exact method here in michigan also! Great video the scoring of the bottom nodes is the key for my success.

The dogwood sends out suckers underground to form new trees. That’s how they got along your fence line.

Going to need to look into this. Most of my 26 acres in PA is mostly swamp/marsh area think I would benefit from getting this growing in a few areas. Will work on getting some this spring, thank you for the tips definitely helpful.

I’ve watched that first video with the pallet a few times now. With that being said I agree on the cage. Tomato cages are easy and fast. At least until established. Trying to get my hunting spot better a little at a time. Good video. What state are you in?

Just found your channel while looking for tips of red osier. I found a huge patch on some powerlines i want to make cuttings from and plant on my hunting property. However im not sure if its too early to start planting them. Im in the Northeast and we have still had some cold below freeze nights. Any suggestions would be awesome!
If the ground/mud is thawed during the day and you can push the cuttings into the ground w/o breaking them…you should be good. To my knowledge it will stay dormant until temps are warm enough to promote growth.

Thanks for the tips and I just just subscribed to Aidy’s channel and have been subscribed to yours. I’m thinking we have some things in common and the things we do for the deer huh? Took the snowmobile to the pole shed for the year this past Friday and there had to be 40 deer eating in the two acre food plot of sweet feast brassica and Fall forage blend split that has finally been exposed from the melting snow….then I will rotate those two this Fall. Plot was pretty much down to the ground before winter I thought but the deer must be hungry and the leftover’s must be better than sticks! The plot was covered by a foot of snow for a long time this year…. Some digging but it must have been hard for them to get to.The deer were in there at 1:30 pm but the cabin is on a dead end road so there’s no human intrusion. I had some questions for Aidy as well and looking forward to his reply, too long to tell you my question for him but if you want you can look for it in his comments. Thanks again!

I experimented last year and had a 50% success rate on about 100 cuttings. I came back in after summer growing season and tubed survivors to protect for winter.
This year, I think scoring the bottom will make a big difference in success rate. Also I am trimming off as much excess above ground as possible - I think I lost some with new roots trying to support too much I left above ground.
I am going to put as many cutting as I can get into a wetland shooting lane. If they happen to get too big for the shooting lane, I’ll cut a new lane next to the line of red osiers and start the process again.

I'm in Minnesota, and just did some of these last week. But it got quite cold here over the weekend where the ground refroze. Anyone's thoughts on their chances of living?
I think you’re fine, cuttings should still be dormant.

You HAVE to cage it. Totally enclose it top to bottom. The deer WILL hammer it hard when just planted and uproot it.

For cheap cages I use conduit, chicken wire and zip ties.

We have loads of dog woods but not this variety.
I’m not sure how they do down south…do you have some pretty wet areas on your property?
Two of my newest clearcuts are lowland with a few wet weather sloughs on them .

I live in Holland, MI. I have a 3/4 acre bog that we want to fill in with ROD. If you ever want to sell any cuttings, let me know...I will travel!
I tried the Aidys link and it's not on youtube anymore.
Mark you should be able to get your own cuttings in a road ditch or swamp area. Just cut them when they are dormant refrigerate or freeze them until your ground thaws out and plant them. Just remember to keep them the right direction when you stick them in the ground.
where can I find abundant red osier dogwood growing naturally ?
Creek banks, marshes, places with wet soil. It’s easy to spot in the winter/early spring when it’s bright red.
From Canada, sometimes they are hit and miss. I live by a natural swamp with plenty of beaver dams. None around the swamp.
However there’s a ton just off the highway in ditches where I live. Sort of funny.
Here in Northern Maine it is literally everywhere. Couple things to note. just a couple deer will eat the buds off of an acre of red osiers in about a week in the spring. It does not produce enough food to be worth the effort. It also seems to attract deer in the spring when you aren't hunting. On a few occasions in acres of Dogwoods I have jumped a few does during hunting season, but it is not a big buck attractor. In 30 years of living and hunting here, I have never seen a buck in red osiers unless it was just passing through.

How much sunlight does the ROD need?
I've certainly found ROD on my property growing in the shade but its usually small. Full sun / partial shade seems to be preferred.
