  • Red Osier Dogwood, (Cornus sericea) is also known as Red Twig Dogwood for its blazing red stems in the winter. A native shrub to North America, these stems can easily be used to propagate themselves over and over every year. Native plants repair our ecosystem and give habitat back to wildlife. If you plant Red Osier Dogwood you'll see stunning flowers in the spring, berries for birds to eat, outrageous fall color and shockingly red stems in the winter. Talk about four season interest!

    Awesome! If you have a lot of deer around you may need to protect em while young to get em growing. If I don’t cage young dogwoods it’s almost futile.

    • @lisalikesplants
      @lisalikesplants  5 месяцев назад +1

      Depends on what tree! Trees that have multiple stems like redbud would probably be your best bet, otherwise I would just grow from seed or get a young sapling. Thanks for watching! 🌱🌱🌱

    Hi. Love the video. You are a great teacher. I need your advice. My sibs and I are cleaning out our childhood home in Austin Texas and preparing it for sale. On the northwest corner of the house is a Georgia Dogwood bush that came from our ancestral home in Georgia when my family began migrating west. Apparently, that original bush in Georgia is still there and must be over 150 years old. The bush here in Austin will surely be destroyed when new owners renovate the property, and I am keen to take my own cuttings of this Dogwood for my own home and continue the legacy. I live in an apartment. Can the bush thrive in a pot? How much sun do I need? and what kind of soil should I use. I only have a narrow window at getting this to work and much is at stake Any help would be great! Thanks, James

      Usually shrubs don't do great indoors if they don't have a very sunny window. But I'm not too familiar with that species. Couldn't hurt to try! 🌱

    Omg i have one out front that’s too big and i have a swampy ditch in the back that would be perfect for this. So sad I already pruned them and composted them!
    If you cut in the late winter and there’s still snow…. Do you put them in the ground outside? Or early spring before last frost is OK?

    • @lisalikesplants
      @lisalikesplants  3 месяца назад

      Thanks for watching! Planting in early spring outside is probably ideal. 🌱🌱🌱

    Have you ever done red osier from seed? I have cuttings that have blooms coming out and was wondering if starting from seed would be all that difficult. Could I plant a ripened berry or would I have to separate the seed from the fruit?

    • @lisalikesplants
      @lisalikesplants  2 месяца назад +1

      I have not grown them from seed. I would separate the fruit from the seed and do a search for "red osier dogwood stratification" to see if it requires cold stratification. Let us know how it goes! 🌱🌱🌱

    I have 6 Ninebark Lemon Candy plants in my yard. What is the best way to take care of and trim them? They are growing wild. These are 3 years old and doing well.

    • @lisalikesplants
      @lisalikesplants  2 месяца назад

      Ninebark gets large. I'm not familiar with the way the lemon candy is supposed to look but the original cascades its branches over like a fountain in a 6ft space. It looks better when the branches are sowed to be long and arch over- but check in Google images if this is a more upright form.

    Can I take cuttings now and plant them along the fence? Or do I need to put them in sand for a year and then transplant? I want to make an eco friendly privacy fence😊

    • @lisalikesplants
      @lisalikesplants  Месяц назад

      You can take cuttings now and overwinter them and plant in the spring. The only issue with taking cuttings in the summer is they cannot tolerate direct sunlight for a few months while they are making roots. So they have to be in moist well drained sand or well draining soil, out of the sun. They can probably be transplanted in late September. Protect from deer and rabbits.

    I have red twig dogwood. Do tell cuttings need sun, shade or partial sun? How many hours. I have VERY LITTLE SUN ON MY PROPERTY

    • @lisalikesplants
      @lisalikesplants  3 месяца назад +1

      They will root in shade. It's better for them because too much sun can dry them out before they have a root system. 🌱🌱🌱

    • @lisalikesplants
      @lisalikesplants  4 месяца назад +1

      You can take cuttings any time! Late winter is best for the plant because it is still dormant but these shrubs are tough and they should be fine. You still have many months to grow roots before next winter. 🌱🌱🌱
      I don't like taking cuttings at the END of summer, because they will only have little baby roots by the time winter comes, and I don't bring them inside. 😅

      @@deerhearse4895 maybe (probably) I’m overthinking - I’m in MPLS / Zone 4 and am getting confused about when i should try this. I think I’d need to wait until the ground isn’t frozen, right? I guess our “late winter” is like early/mid April 🤪

    Is this in the willow family.

    • @lisalikesplants
      @lisalikesplants  4 месяца назад

      Thanks for your question! It is not in the willow family, it is the genus Cornus, but willows are the genus Salix.
      Willows are actually probably the easiest shrub to propagate. 😅
