This is by far, the best podcast gettinsalty has had yet. Not the flavorful inside knowledge but the actual history of what happened. Hank rocked it, very insightful.
I was in the WFC at Lehman Bros at the time of first WTC attack. The whole building shook and lights and computers went out for a few seconds and them cane back on. We thought a ship coming down the Hudson had hit the piers! We all ran to that side of the building but saw nothing unusual. Eventually we were drawn to the WTC side of the building and saw the smoke coming out of WTC. My Dad was retired from TL-45 in 1986 (served from 1959-86... worked with Dick Hannon, Ed Pertell, Bob McMahon, Miuccio). I called Dad on my cell as the wirelines were intermittent. I said “they say it was a boiler explosion, maybe I should hang around and finish the workday...”. He said “I have been to dozens of boiler explosions... that was NO boiler explosion... GET OUTTA THERE!”.
I love that thought on the firefighters---"it's not any better or worse than anybody else, it's just your calling".

Weather on Feb 26 1993 was dreary, grey, and sleet.
Great show . My uncle who was a firefighter and photographer for the FDNY John Strandberg was cited for his photos of the 93 WTC bombing
They helicoptered Otis elevator mechanics to the roof to get elevators moving. There was a school group in a blind hoist way trapped and the Otis guys got them out.

February 1993 was over 7 years before I was born. My parents didn't even live in my hometown yet. In fact, they lived closed to NYC in Philly. Now I myself and a couple years into a career in the fire service. My how time flies.

Hank brought up the book 1000 Years of Revenge. Another great read regarding the lead up to 9/11 is Lawrence Wright's 2005 Pulitzer Prize winning book The Looming Tower. It, one gives the background on Islamic terrorism and the motive behind why bin Laden wanted to attack the United States, and two it shows the disfunction between the FBI"s I49 squad from the New York field office and the CIA's bin Laden group in Langley, Virginia. It also exposes how much John P. O"Neil --- the former head of the I49 unit and later became head of security at the World Trade Center in August 2001 following his retirement ---- and Michael Schurer of the CIA's bin Laden group. I would also highly recommend reading Former FBI Supervisory Special Agent Ali Soufan's 2011 memoir entitled The Black Banners, which also goes into depth on how we got here from the inside. Both also teamed up to create a dramatization of the Looming Tower which premiered as a Hulu miniseries in 2018. You can also watch the 2002 Frontline documentary on John P. O'Neil entitled "The Man Who Knew" which also described the disfunction inside the FBI along with the disfuntion between the FBI and CiA.
I am an elevator guy from Boston. This elevators had old style roller guides . The new ones you don’t feel any sway. The sway is from the rails getting compressed after years and joint get out of alignment. Those super high rise the steel during construction would move with the sun. It actually moved from early day to later. Lining rails was a headache.

Great episode with Hank. Ronnie Bucca and a Battalion Chief are believed to be the first responders who made it to the highest floor in either tower.

Also didn’t former FBI agent John O’Neil was close to figuring this out but was stymied at every turn. john also lost his life at the WTC 9/11

Still have a piece of glass from the windows. As a new Marshal it was interesting to watch the senior Marshals get the investigation moving and actually come up with the hidden vin on the truck to identify where it came from I believe it was Philly Marr of Brooklyn Base. Even though cops got credit for it.
At the time of the 93 attack i was working security at the international commercial bank of china on liberty st. But i worked nights.

Btw a giant plane like a 767 loaded with 10,000 gallons of fuel, that’s like a solid steel object! We have fuel Mins in B-52s because fuel adds strength to the weak aluminum aircraft. -- The south tower; I think had they hit it even lower, it would have trimmed even more time off. Probably would’ve fell sooner. -- Thank god the terrorist didn’t hit the buildings lower down! They could’ve killed 10,000-15,000 people. I’ve often thought: tower 2 (@9:03- 9:57/9:58.) --Tower 1: 8:46-10:28am.)
It appears, it all came down to how much weight was sitting on the impact zone. Also don’t forget the 60-80mph wind speeds @1,000’ AGL. -- making it burn faster. I think everyone has took a leaf blower to fire before. - It was oxygen rich! if you look, the smoke went horizontal almost immediately.. very little vertical spread signifies; Cold dense air aloft that morning. Or a CAP. So the warm air couldn’t punch threw that dense cold air.
Great show, Correct me if I'm wrong, Talk about no one wanting to listen to the fire marshal about the possibility of another attack, But Does anyone remember the military getting small hits of attacks, and it seemed like President Clinton, nor Bush was really doing anything about it, it was like they were brushing it off. There was at least 5 separate smaller attacks. that to me was leading up to 9/11. a much bigger scale. If people would have just listened, there may not have been 9/11, or it wouldn't have been so catastrophic.
