    Part 5: • Luenell & Vlad Argue i...
    --------
Actress Luenell has supported Taraji Henson's view on the gender wage gap in Hollywood during a recent interview. Henson, who has considered leaving acting due to the low pay, was described by Luenell as a "great actress" who should be making the same money as Meryl Streep. Luenell believes that all women, particularly those of ethnic backgrounds, are underpaid in every field. This disparity is magnified within the comedy industry as men often earn more than their female counterparts, due to their ability to make deals amongst themselves, Luenell suggests. She criticized the pay difference between actors and actresses, adding that Henson alongside others like Angela Bassett and Sheryl Lee Roth should be earning just as much as male actors and top white actresses. Luenell defended the frustration of actresses and highlighted the importance of equal pay in this industry.

One Big Issue is that after people sign contracts and when they start filming they start talking and salary may come up. At that point is when actors and actresses start saying wait a minute you got paid that and I got paid this? Thats where the issue comes in. At that point I can see people complaining. When you first sign your contract you are thinking, ok I got good money, but after you sign, and while filming, you find out that the waiter in the movie is making near what you are getting paid, hell yea I will say something, but thats after the signing. That is where it is not fair.

Luenell is absolutely correct when she spoke about the golf game situation. I am a retired Human Resources Specialist and I have had first hand account of how people move up the career ladder when they rub elbows with managers who are also part of the work golf tournaments. They treat each other like family, always promoting each other (literally), give each other large bonuses ( in the thousands), hire each others kids. When one of them got married they got a promotion, if someone had a baby they got a big bonus, one guy was upset because his wife divorced him so his manager friend gave him an award of forty hours off from work. They really look out for each other. One young lady came to work right out of high school within fifteen years she had reached the level of management which was unheard of especially without a college degree of any kind. But she had a good golf game and she was the God daughter of one of the managers. I've already told my daughter to be sure to join the golf club at work. It puts you front and center with the decision makers.

She’s talking about having a bare minimum wage that her peers who aren’t women of color have that are based off their accomplishments and accolades given by the industry. I bet the actresses of non-color can say “they don’t get out of bed for less than…” and I think that any actress of color should be able to say it to. The laws of economics is against her to get equitable pay because they know there aren’t that many roles available for women of color her age. You even the playing field by creating the movie yourself. Most of the movies she’s been a part of has black producers telling the story so why can’t she be one? That’s what Halle Berry did with Dorthy Dandridge and Bruised. That’s what Denzel has done multiple times. Will Smith has been a producer for decades. His first film was ATL. However, I agree with Vlad when he says that we have to do it for ourselves and not be dependant on others. I have come to realize this myself as a Black woman. It's not going to change. There's a resistance to Black individuals achieving success, and there's a desire to keep us marginalized. It's time for us to create our own stuff and Taraji is in the position to do it. Many of us aren't privileged but she is. I see it on both sides.

This interview is a perfect example because the argument about an artist's work "bombing" and them being expected to give money back is ludicrous af. He's not even acknowledging the main issue about Black female actresses like Taraji not being paid what they're worth. Her net worth being $12M is irrelevant, probably inaccurate, and still pales in comparison to her white female and male counterparts, who are bagging $20M per film.

I'm taking all of the risk - if you don't like my offer you can say no and I miss out on your talents. Its like selling a home - the market sets the rate, not the home owner. Taraji is a voice and she will be heard. I hate that she is experiencing disrespect when it comes to recognition in Hollywood as she is a great actress. This woman has been through some thangs! Not sure if anyone remembers when she contemplated suicide during the pandemic? She was dealing with internal demons and hardships. Do y”all remember when she was dating Lamar Odom and he left her for the younger Khloe Kardashian? This actually happened and then he proposed 1 month into the relationship with Khloe. That hurt pretty bad I’m sure but Taraji still stood tall and continued to master her craft. Some may think a millionaire crying over money is insensitive and out of touch with society but it really isn’t. This is her livelihood. Us in the real world have cellphone bills and rent and mortgages and schools and loans and celebrities also have bills and mortgages and IRS and car insurance but on a greater spectrum. Small income, small bills but bills we struggle with. Celebrities have large incomes, celebrity type incomes and celebrity type bills. Astronomical bills. A celebrity like Will Smith and Chris Rock and Margo Robbie been making income and good income for a while where as Taraji didn’t have those same opportunities.

All actors aren’t writers, producers and directors. Their profession is acting. When nurses are underpaid, we don’t ask them, “Why don’t you just do surgery too?” We don’t ask teacher to be principals and other high level administrators so they can get a living wage. Why can’t actors just be actors and get fair pay? He didn’t prove his point. He is simply talking to someone who wasn’t prepared to counter his stupidity. There’s a difference.
Also, Taraji’s argument is I have these accomplishments and this kind of box office draw, why do I have to start over from step one every negotiation? Of course this culture vulture doesn’t get it.

He made his point because he is coming from the stand point of the one that brings the more capital. When you bring more capital i.e the infrastructure, the cameras etc… ; you have to factor all of that before paying the actors . And like he said if the film flopped , why don’t the actor give the money back. Acting is a not job comparable to all the jobs you cited . As an actor , you are an independent employee so you are at the mercy of the industry that you are in , unless you decide to make the movie yourself , which most of those actors don’t wanna do because they know it is hard.

That's why I left what I was doing and decided to go build my own stuff because I got tired of being on other people's payrolls, letting them get all of the juice of my talent, and getting pats on the head. They will literally do anything other than just pay you what you're worth. They'll buy you things, give you a modest bonus at the end of the year, and give you a nearly meaningless promotion or title, but they won't pay you the salary that you are worth.

The recklessness is which this man speaks…it takes more than just “knowing a few investors” to make a movie. You have to factor in cast, crew, marketing, time, and countless other factors to make a movie. Then, the movie HAS to be a success or you may not get another opportunity to make another one for years and how do you think most actors recoup their money? They have to get hired again on someone else’s project…this is why most actors don’t create their own projects. Michael Jai White is also a man which still negates Taraji’s point about the pay disparity between BLACK WOMEN and the rest of Hollywood. I wish that anyone who isn’t black and a woman would listen sometimes instead of thinking they know what we go through
