- On this episode of Street You Grew Up On, Kerry is joined by the talented actress, entrepreneur, and mental health advocate, Taraji P. Henson. Hailing from the Southeast Side of Washington D.C, the two look back on her life growing up in an inner city where, despite any issues that may have plagued her community, she was raised in a loving and happy environment that encouraged her imagination to be anything she wanted to be. That curiosity not only led her into acting, but also into Black hair care, as well as Black mental health awareness. She now has her own hair care line TPH by TARAJI in stores at Walmart and a non-profit organization called the Brois Lawrence Henson Foundation that’s dedicated to creating innovative healing approaches in Black communities.

Tell us about your hair care journey! 💆🏾♀
I wear my hair in a short natural cut now but throughout my life I've worn press n curl, cornrows, braids, relaxers. I feel very free wearing my natural hair now.
Idk if guys can contribute but… I used to cut my hair very short but now I like to let it grow out into a fro since I’ve been grown and only get line ups occasionally.
I have a girl, she is 6 and tenderheaded. When I do her hair, it can take days. i will go so slow. We blow out first to minimize tagling in between detangling. All her styles are part 2's of the previous style because we recycle parts to minimize tension.... basically, our entire journey together is teaching her to love her hair without hurting her. (It's not always a success but it's a work in progress)
Whew. It’s been a journey. I started getting perms for as long as I can remember. I finally decided to go natural in college to really love on myself and my hair. It’s been like almost 8 years and I’m grateful to have found a rhythm and routine with taking care of my hair and growing it. Slowly but surely my hair is healthy, fuller and growing longer. It’s a journey but I love my hair and I’m grateful.
I wear my hair natural- went natural in 2014 ( because I went completely chemical free no relaxers or HAIR DYE I had to embrace my grey/silver) it’s been a long journey
I will forever love Taraji, a true queen. She should have gotten her flowers on Hidden Figures. Also what she is doing for mental health is not appreciated enough.
I agree. That role alone was everything!❤
Benjamin Button was a phenomenal performance also❤
You both are too cute. Stay blessed.
Oh yeah Hidden Figures that girl did it!!
she carried Person of Interest
Cookie Lyons and Olivia Pope. So help me Gawd!
Yes💯👌👏❤️
I know right!!!🙏🏾🔥🥰
a two punch combo.. (from "Empire" and "Scandal")
You ladies need to do a project together ❤️
Lol ❤ i thinking about saved the last dance and hair show lol..
Taraji please stay walking in your truth. Closed doors only mean they weren’t meant for you. You’re an amazing brilliant black woman. Strong just as God made you. Your life will stay full of opportunities and success. Count on it.❤
Women God is our resource so trust Him, not man. Believe and Receive all doors remain open 2 u by ur Faith in the Lord.
The company you keep is also important because they help you think and make great choices- life and business.
Good morning. I admire both of these women. I can relate. I grew up in Baltimore, Maryland but there were at least 4 generations or more before my time. Only the strong or crazy survived Baltimore but it made me the woman I am today. My church kept me grounded and gave me a scholarship for college. My family came from Cambridge, Maryland and South Baltimore. My dad’s ppl are rural Deep South Carolinians. When blacks were able to moved West, we moved to West Baltimore. Baltimore was so crazy we moved from Gwynn’s Falls, to Dickey Hill and by 1970’s we moved to Northwood. Maryland was so expensive we all lived as an extended family. During the summer if I was not at the Rec’s summer camp, I was sent to Columbia, Maryland, the Carolina’s, and holiday visits to the Maryland Eastern Shore.
@@homodeus8713 so true

Ms Henson. She should get paid more. She is a great great actress and have been in many wonderful movies.
All black actresses should be getting paid more, Viola dont make what Meryl Streep does and she should.

Why doesn't this channel have millions of subs???🤔🤔🤔
I was wondering the same thing!
Because it is too positive and uplifting. Many people today love wild and toxic. Hence the popularity of reality TV 📺
