Filip, I am a 64 year old retired violist, teacher, composer, cathedral choirmaster, organist. I still practice 2 hours daily. One thing I discovered, was to warm up first on double stops, extremely slowly, softly and extremely evenly - like using a wet finger on a fine crystal glass. This practice allows me to have an almost perfect tonal quality for everything else. In a way, much like the sound of a fine clarinetist. Then I later add everything else. I studied with many many great musicians and conductors; my first teacher in conducting was the god-son of Brahms and friend of R. Strauss for example.

I am practicing slow bowing at BPM=30 which is limited by my metronum app, and I realy appriciate the profit of slow bowing practicing. I was an beginner and took lessons for 10 years from the age of 40. After 10 years I plateaued and quit. Violin became a "job" and I didnt feel like practicing anymore. Quite frankly, we arent all born with the same gray matter and gifts. I enjoyed playing in a beginner orchestra that my teacher set up. I tried to join a local orchestra and failed to catch on. I still dont understand how violinists like yourself can remember the music for these long pieces w/o referring to the music.

My in-person lessons for 4 years were really waste of time and money as my teacher - perhaps rather typically here in the UK - was fixated with getting me through the ABRSM grades, when what I most wanted was to explore the instrument and create the best possible sound. During the pandemic I turned to youtube. You and one other are now my daily "go to" tutorials. I have learned so much and made 10 times more progress than with those paid lessons, to the point I now lead the viola section in one community orchestra (which includes a number of folk who have played all their lives) and appear sufficiently capable to make up the numbers are other orchestras' concerts. I particularly enjoy the analogies you make with other skills and pastimes. Thank you!
This was pretty helpful! I had been having some trouble with my G string and I think I'd really gotten scared away from the bridge to try to hide it playing softer, which exacerbated the problem. Attacking the note nearer the bridge seems to be a good first step to fixing it!
Wow! Great advice. I was practicing the Schumann Phantasiestucke and they sounded wishy washy. Well, everything I played lacked definition. Playing nearer at the bridge immediately gave more sound a also a lot more confidence. Thank you!

"Exactly" said I and we laughed. WILL try this tomorrow... Tuning up at midnight won't go down too well with the neighbours! Your vids are top class btw.
Also for a good sound play in a room or hall where there is no furniture no curtains to absorb sound waves. Acoustics of the hall is important to sense any intonation mistake.

My violin teacher told me that I didn't play in the string. So he made me play consistent bow strokes with a lot of pressure to be well in the string but sometimes it creaked, he hadn't explained to me that the more pressure I needed, the more I had to play close to the bridge ! Thanks u sir
You’re most welcome! It’s all really about 3 things: your bow speed, bow pressure and bow placement. You change one of these parameters, you have to adjust the other two

@@filippogady Hi . Thankyou for your reply. I studied with Grisha in the early 90s for 3 years. I still do his exercises for both right hand and left hand....and to me they make sense. I have great memories about him..how he would work on sound...explaining about the depth of sound.. plus I have his 24 Paganini caprices... stunning..so clean..he not only was a great violinist but also a great viola player... keep up the great work... I love your playing..so fresh and sincere with energy.. thankyou
I tried this but my violin just sounds super scratchy near the bridge…. Is it that I need to persevere and get some rosin on the strings or something? Or is my violin too cheap lol.
I think they will say that to a beginner mostly, when NOT playing on the fingerboard is still considered an amazing feat. What I'm talking about are techniques that are a little more advanced.

Yes, the closer you play to the bridge, the more pressure you will need to make it sound. Consistent bow speed and bow pressure are key.

You have to find the right balance of bow pressure and bow speed. It requires some experimenting. Good luck :)
