The instant you mentioned that freaking leaflet I knew exactly where this was going. I remember that page doing the rounds of my high school ICT class.
The most popular thing I did was done while working as a contractor for the US Air Force right out of college. We were going to have a table at an event. So I had one night to get a sign for the table. All the logos I found online for the Air Force had an awful background that was just slightly off white or made a printout off the office printer look awful. So I took some time learned a bit of GIMP, and made a mask and very hastily cut out the logo and put some WordArt underneath it to look generically like the air force logo. You can tell this because the edges of the letters are so incredibly sloppy cause I was individually picking pixels. A believer in open source tools and fresh into it, I threw it up on creative commons for anyone to use who'd like to. To this day its still the #1 result for "Air Force Logo", I've seen it on all sorts of articles talking about the Air Force, and even offical government newletters. And I can always tell BECAUSE it's so sloppily done that it is mine.
So which one is it? Is it the "vintage" logo or the current one? I have to see it now but I didn't see any in the top results of Google that we're obviously sloppy.

Nothing ever took off. Then one day on Twitter somebody asked us to post our greatest achievement. Although would be nice to actually go and bless the rains down in Africa...

I think it's important for people to define their goals, in no uncertain terms. If your only goal is "to be popular on the internet", you're likely going to have to abandon all other personal goals and interests, identify what it is people are interested in consuming from the internet, and become a top tier producer of that content. If you want to distribute your hobby on the internet and discover other people who also enjoy your hobby and appreciate your production, you might be in for a struggle. But you'll learn a lot about how to present your hobby in entertaining and consumable ways for the masses.

I learned when I created a viral website 6 months ago that it is relatively easy. Getting people to stay going to it, however, can be quite tricky. This is really good advice, and something that I'm trying to do on my own, although I like the way you put it. Of course, my viral website that took me a few days to put together (4 hours for the initial version, which I improved as it saw success) was about project 10 that I had worked on, and the only one that has had any real success. Trying to leverage that in to another product is tricky. Really look forward to hearing more of what you have to say!

Many sites still have it, although they don't advertise it. Sadly it is starting to fade.
I would argue it's not a podcast if it isn't distributed by RSS although these days Apple/Google/Whatever generally abstract that away with their lists of known feeds
Generating an RSS feed for each of my subscribed RUclips channels has been an incredibly useful trick for me.
I still get my news via RSS feeds
I got back to it using it as my primary news source, since (as far as I know) it doesnt get manipulated by some ai thinking it knows best what you want to read/watch/listen to
I think it's important for people to define their goals, in no uncertain terms.
But you'll learn a lot about how to present your hobby in entertaining and consumable ways for the masses.
quick and dirty is usually me when it comes to liking the stuff tom makes. i like the park benches and the technical diffuculties stuff more than tom's main stuff but i really like toms main channel stuff too.
"The chances of a project succeeding aren't coupled to how much time, effort, and money you've spent on it." I'm going all antsy and insane over my own videos again and... Gosh, I already knew that. But I felt something like instant relief, hearing it again.
And to add insult to injury for the Government, its still live all these years later. Good job
It seems like most people who try very hard fail, but most people who succeed tried very hard to do so. So it seems best to try as hard as you can afford given expecting nothing.
Tom Scott: RUclips didn't exist 10 years ago.
Me: *Views Tom's oldest video about frying eggs, uploaded 2006
Also me: *Sees that the video was released in 2018
Also me: *(Visible Confusion)*

"it was more than 10 years ago"
@GoonSharky Not really a woooosh moment mate
RUclips ist now 16 years old... I started in 2006 as a confused 16 yo. Now I am 31. And still confused what this website is about.

I still can't figure out how old Tom is, after years of watching his videos.
thank u tom. you are truly an inspiration
Nearing 4 years now and over 5 million subscribers, good on Tom
Your naration style and storytelling has improved over the years I have subscribed to your channel. Previusly I would only think"it's going to be fun to see the next chapter sometime" now, I hardly can't wait! Really looking forward to it!
By the way, the page is WONDERFULL! friggin love it.
“90% of everything is crap”
Me an intellectual: well crap is 100% crap
wrong, it's 10% corn
David Willanski 100% cake
And everything is about 99.9999% empty space.
@@DavidWillanski What, you gonna pick out that 10% for Christmas dinner?
Nah, it's still crap.
@@MonkeyJedi99 including that thing between your ears ;D
so aperture science method, throw things to the wall and see what sticks?
That's the way to make anything creative though. Make things that you enjoy yourself, and eventually you'll get something that others like as well.
aperture science gets distracted by the idea of making things out of white plastic, maybe don't take advice from them.
Cakes are sticky
I really enjoyed "preparing for emergencies" I had no idea who had done it. Thanks for a smile all those years ago.
This guy is just awesome...Tom Scott keep doing what your doing, it really motivates at times.
2:58 paused the video to check that sarcastic website version out. Yup, it still exists :)
Link plz
Gd ll4ma read the description.
Really look forward to hearing more of what you have to say!
i understood literly nothing
gimme da link beech
I would post the link to the site, but I suspect it would be flagged as spam and not shown. But the site is whereisroadster .com, remove the space and you should be able to find it.

I love your monologues Tom, they're as inspirational as they are impressive as they are entertaining. Keep being amazing and different, because your such a great breath of fresh air
It's a lovely site and should be updated to be relevant with the times. You sir have struck gold!
I've subscribed and followed your posts, vlogs, games, and particular viewpoint for years.
But one post more than any other has really been the defining post that made me continue to follow your efforts.
Ba-dum tiss. Off a cliff. It showed me you were of a like mind as I am. So here I am still.
Oh I love the detail about Tom's site being online still and the government's site being in the internet archive (hurray for internet archives btw).
LOVE THIS

I love this. The site is *still* up, and it’s almost 2020.
Rewatching this in 2021 [while dealing with long haul covid symptoms]…” I could just be standing in front of a green screen… but then I wouldn’t be travelling so much, having so much fun…” So prothétique.
"That time I got in trouble with the government."
Hmm...
Sounds like a anime title.
If anyone is possibly wondering, it is 'That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime'
How to become popular like tom online. Wear a Red T-Shirt and grow a pony tail. Ha Ha Ha Ha.
And run for parliament as a Pirate
And sit in a Kitchen and have Chris say "I was expecting that to be longer" And the rest of them wet themselfs with laughter.
Step two, cut off pony tail.
Yeah, just wear the same top as the one in that one photo that you kinda liked

Way to be popular: do something viral and borderline illegal.
-Tom Scott 2018
This is probably my favorite video I’ve seen of yours so far. Good work, all of it, your life’s work.
Another reason quick and dirty projects are often the most popular is because they're the ones you make to fill a need or void. It's usually some tool you hack together for personal use and share, or a particularly good opportunity for a joke.
the website is still up btw
Fail faster
That's one thing I've heard a few times, and definitely seems to sum up the point here well :D
Younger Tom: “HA, PRANK’D!”
Tom now: *internal cringing intensifies*
wow I wish I could like this video twice....even now in 2021 it's such great advice embedded in such a captivating story. really great job
Thanks! This was really helpful. I have a zero effort video on my channel that is just drowning in views, while the ones that have effort put in just shrivel up and die. Your perspective on success alleviates the negative feelings associated with that.
“I miss RSS?“ even 2 years after this video, RSS is still around. In fact, I use it to get notified of your videos. I don't need a proprietary subscribe button and to check 15 different platforms. I just look into my RSS reader and get it all. If it's not there it virtually doesn't exist. So, instead of missing RSS, we should all do our part in keeping it alive. :)
The joke site still being up but the actual government site not being up is peak irony and comedy.
Oh, we already know what that really important piece of the puzzle was: red t-shirts! You were nothing until you started wearing those. ;P
Hi Tom, I'm your new subscriber from Indonesia. I enjoy watching your videos, you explain everything thing clearly and honestly.
Needed to see this video today. Not about being famous, but keep trying - build the next failure and again and again you only need one to work.
