Ep. 35 - How to turn a 12 gauge #8 target load into a slug shotshell

- In this episode we strip a Federal #8 target load shotshell down, modify the shot cup and put a recently molded 7/8 oz Lee slug onboard. It’s finished with a DIY “overshot” card and roll crimped. Lastly, I scribble the load on the hull so I know what’s headed down range.
I keep the shot, melt it down and mold these slugs, 00 buckshot and .69 cal pumpkin balls.

I made more 1,000 of this during the pandemic. The make the large steel ar500 targets ring like church bells. This is the only ammo that's available for cheap and fun to shoot, nowadays.

If they are for an ak or ar type good luck you’d better had tested a few before going guns ho on making a bunch of ammo that want cycle properly just saying dramatically reducing the shell size fucks up in pump or semi guns retain the full length of the shot shell so When the apocalypse hits or the next Civil War you know your fucking ammunition is going to work for you!
@@an_what true story. I have an AK type. OAL does come into play. Haven’t experienced any issues with pressures related to payload swap, ie. loose shot to slug, etc. From my experience 1 ounce is 1 ounce.
I shoot most of these shells in either a pump or single shot.
Shit, even shotgun ammo is beginning to become scarce and expensive.
I forgot I already commented on this video. I just bought a 000 buckshot mood as well. There are no more federal shotshells at my local gun store so I can’t get good fit for my slugs, so I decided to try out 000 buckshot which also fits 357 mag shells if needed.

Interesting. I took a box and replaced some with rocksalt. I'll have to try this with some others. I like the idea. I kept the top and glued it back on.
I’ve been doing the same. I also use the federal top gun target loads but I use a 7/8 oz key slug and I don’t trim the wad or add a cap. The roller crimp keeps the slug in.

A friend of mine also has an AK styled 12.. and yeah, lol.. they do eat a lot shells quick, fast and in a hurry!
Wax slugs work well also in case you dont have lee key drive slugs on hand
I do the same minus the cap the roll crimp keeps everything together fine by itself. If you have an Academy Sports store nearby their Monarch brand shotshells require no trimming. On average I lose between 25 and 50 fps of the advertised fps on the box depending on the shotshell brand. Monarch brand box says 1350 fps and my chronograph with the slug average is 1300 fps, a 7/8 ounce slug at 1300 shatters cinder blocks and is easy on the shoulder.
I soooooooo need to just cough it up and buy a chrono.

Lol we put nails, marbles, chains, literally anything and everything has made it’s way out the business end of my 12g. Lol
With that said I had a short barrel with 0 choke, and it’s smooth bore so
Look down the barrel and see if there are any deep scratches in the bore.
Safety note: check that the wad and slug together will fit through your barrel. If it doesn’t fit through your cylinder choke, don’t do it. Cylinder choke only if using recast shot but could have more leeway with pure lead.
Do you mean check each round, or just a sample of the load?
If the slug by itself falls through the barrel freely you are good to go. The wad will "give" in a tight barrel.

SouthWest Prepper Not to loose at all. But the roll crimper I am using will bite into the slug a little bit. And since I do hundreds of those things I don’t want lead building up on the crimper. I’ve tried it both ways and it doesn’t affect the accuracy. Also... I am not hardening my lead.. if I did it might not bite into it, but it also may break my crimper.

I just made a few hundred buckshot rounds from the low brass #8 shot I had laying around.
I bought a bunch of round “split shot” sinkers for fishing- emptied the tiny #8 shot - put 10 sinkers in each and squashed the crimp down again...
Don’t know how buckshot shoots in a low brass shell, but I’ll find out soon.

But I Semi Crimp By Putting Bushing Under Hull On a Lee Load All And Using The Crimp Starter And Semi-Crimp Around Slug. This Holds Slug Down Against Bottom Of Shot Cup.
I Will Heat To Be Crimped Area Wiith Hair Dryer, Before Semi Crimping
This Aids In Setting Hull Memory With New Crimp Spot

I keep the lead I dump and melt it. I then use a mold and make the slugs. I also make buckshot and .69 caliber round ball.
The cardboard disks are called overshot cards. You can buy them...I do that..or you can get a 3/4” hole punch from a hobby store and punch your own out of cereal box and such. I do that too.

Might be a dumb question but you didn't have to add anymore powder to the shell correct? Cant find slugs anywhere in my area, have been considering doing this
Absolutely NOT!! Super dangerous! One should NEVER mix powders! Different size and shapes of the powder pieces, burn rates etc etc. And I have no idea what powder is in those shells.
With that being said... there is enough powder in the shell to launch 1-1/8 ounce of load. The slugs I mold are 7/8 ounce. So plenty of power to spit that slug down range. I haven’t chrono’d em, so I do not know their velocity. They seem to be pretty accurate out of my shotguns up to 40 yards, which is plenty of range for the woodlands we get where I hunt.

I assume the cardboard lid installed before you roll crimped it will stop accidental detonation from recoil, when a few are loaded in a mag tube?
Since I have never experienced that....that is my assumption too.
I make these myself using a similar method as you since the great ammopocalypse of 2020. I wonder tho, would these be sufficient to take a white tail deer with? I suppose if you had to and shot placement is good. Just wondering if anyone has taken large animals with these?
I’m pretty sure it would. I wouldn’t try at more than 30 or 40 yards. These target loads don’t have a lot of thump dust in them.
The Lee 1oz slugs are for hunting.
The Lee 7/8oz slugs are more accurate and are for target shooting

Out of a smooth bore open cylinder the 7/8 oz is accurate out to about 40 yards.

I watched all kinds of videos like this when I couldn't get ammo last year. I made wax slugs, cut slugs and then I woke the fuck up and bought a press and hunted down components. Those are nice looking short slugs you got there👍How do they shoot?

They shoot good enough for my purpose! I’m not engaging targets at super long distances.. so 50 yards is all I’ve ever shot them and they knock 12 gauge sized holes in stuff.

@@mcschneiveoutdoors3681 my Simi auto bulldog 12ga bullpup will be very happy. I went and got 5000 of 1oz estate 7.5 target rounds and got a 1oz deep hollow point slug mold on the way....deep hollow point, so I can fill the front cavity with something a lil extra for a good pop on impact. Can't wait to test them and site them in at the range.... Sadly I'm limited to ten rounds per mag in Washington state....sucks I want a 30 round drum mag.

By green powder do you mean smokeless powder?
Those shells come with enough powder to push 1 1/8th oz of loose shot. My slugs weigh 7/8 oz. so I have not experienced a problem.

Is this method safe as you are re-placing a 1 1/8th oz load with a 7/8 oz load and could you use this method with any calibre weight for weight shot to slug Thank You
I’m not a doctor, but I have shot hundreds of those with no problem. Me, personally....just me, myself and I...am not concerned unless the payload is greater that what the shell was originally built for. At factory it was designed to launch 1 1/8 oz of payload. The shell don’t know if that is loose shot or melted into a solid hunk of lead.
I’ve read several forums and people get all particular about “this or that” hull can only be used with “this or that” wad. I don’t know. Probably something to it. Maybe not...maybe so.
I’ve been reloading shotshells for pert near 40 years. I’ve ordered certain hulls, and used certain primers, certain wads and got all particular about it before. Still can if I want. Nowadays I use what I got.
The squirrel and rabbit and hogs and soda cans and paper targets don’t give two hoots how defined the shot column was from the shell that hit em. They just fall down.
Long answer, I know. It’s a round about way of saying “do what you feel safe doing.” I’ve never had an issue. I will keep doing it cuz that’s what I do and hopefully y’all like watching the videos.

To the second part of your question... I have no idea what you mean. I make .69 caliber round ball, .71 caliber round ball, 00 buckshot (.32 caliber). I load em all in the same shells which I shoot out of 12 gauge shotguns. Some are single shot, others pump and even some semi-autos.
I also load those same payloads over black powder.
@@mcschneiveoutdoors3681 I feel the same way actually I was curious I was only buying 1oz bird shot. And getting good results at only 50 to 80 yards anything past that not so good. So I was wondering if I used a heavier load bird shot if I could get a little more distance. What’s your thoughts on that I honestly haven’t tried it but your thought process is the same as mine.

I have a Lee mold for my .58 caliber replica Enfield. Could I use a minie ball in the shell?
That’s kinda small so it won’t be very accurate unless you sabot it somehow. 12 gauge is .71 caliber.
The smallest pumpkin balls I make are .69 caliber.
They might fit a 20ga. Try it. I loaded some 57 cal RBs into 20 ga hulls but haven’t tested yet.

Smooth bore.
Please make sure wad with slug will pass through barrel. Check the resistance of the wad and slug, push them through the barrel with a wooden dowel. Some wad and slugs can not be pushed through the barrel. OVER PRESSURE DANGER! CB Windjammer and CB lightning wads clearance work well for me on my 500 Mossberg 12ga. Slug barrel with Lee 7/8oz. Drive Key Slugs.

Rifled slugs can be fired from full chokes, they are meant to swage down as they are hollow on the inside.

I shoot them out of a modified choke. I’d trust them out to about 30… maybe 40 yards.

poot head I haven’t had an issue yet. They aren’t as short as the Aguila Mini so that adapter isn’t required. They are still long enough that they don’t tumble around in the receiver.

As soon as my shooting range dries out I will be conducting that very test. Except for the muzzle velocity. I got that kinda $$!! 🙃
And you can do the same with buckshot...I do. It’s more like low recoil buckshot.
Yoi can only fit 6x 00 buckshot pellers in these shells unless you find a way to undo the star crimp and re star crimp it when you load 9 pellets. But if you cut the shell like he does and add an overshot card and roll crimp you have to go with 6 pellets.

Brother I need your help. I'm trying to do this with my bird shot but my slugs won't let go of the Lee core pin. Is it because the antimony is too high in the lead? I sanded the core with 800 grit sand paper but it didn't help. Maybe I need to use a slightly rougher grit? Tried smoking it too but no luck.
Hmm...I smoke mine with a regular paraffin candle and let it get ALOT of soot. I’ve “heard” (never tried) that a little shot of PAM works. Again..I’ve never tried that. Lee (and I’m sure other companies) make a spray to hit the mold with when casting that helps the slug come out. I have an old can of something I use occasionally .. but it’s name escapes me. I’ll have to look when I get home.

@@mcschneiveoutdoors3681 Thanks man I may try a candle and the spray pam this weekend. I was trying to smoke it with a butane lighter so that may be what's wrong, no soot. Someone used candle wax but he kept lubing it each cast. Hopefully greasing it will work like seasoning cast iron.
@@shindukess oh, lol...yeah. Ya need the soot. Make the inside of the mold black as the night. You may have to re-soot it every 15 or so.

@@mcschneiveoutdoors3681 got my slug mold and made some slugs. I made some black powder shells but they weren't very accurate. I did have one with a used wad like seen in this video, and that one was promising. I'm going to look for a box of bird shot and do what you've done here. I also have some wads coming from Ballistic Products, but not sure they are they right ones. My slug mold came with a load data sheet, so I may try to hunt up some of the wads mentioned in that. I did get the "Obturator gas seals" from Ballistic Products that someone mentioned are good for roundballs. I shot one with the .69 roundball and it wasn't that accurate. I think I'm expecting too much from slugs/roundball at 30 yards. I'm still going to play around and see if I can get a dependable heavy projectile at 30 yards. I just want pie-plate accuracy. So, I'm going to look for a box of birdshot to convert like in this video, since the wad helps center the slug in the bore. I am leaning towards buckshot as a large game load for "survival." Expecting a scatter-gun to have single-projectile accuracy is probably my problem. But I have seen some videos of people shooting slugs accurately at 50 yards. I am wondering about a rifled choke to add a little spin. I do have a .30-06 deer rifle, so maybe I should just use that, LOL. I have a bullet mold for that and the Lee loading tools and have made some-low power rounds with that Trail Boss powder. So, I could hunt small game with the low-powered rounds, and large game with the high-powered ones. But I can't make my own powder for .30-06.....plus, shotguns are just fun.

Whatever you can find!
Federal, Remington, Estate all have a 2 part wad. But the winchester brands all have a single piece wad. You may have to add a shotcard above or below the slug to retain some length to the shell. I personally like the 2 piece wads better bc when you take the shot cup out and trim it you leave the bottom part alone and dont have to disturb the powder, if that makes sense.
@@donaldmack2307 After watching so many videos and posts I put two shot cards under the slug to fill the gaps.
The Estate or Federal Top Gun hulls with the PAPER base wad are perfect for the 7/8 Oz slug. Perfect crimp every time.
Hulls with plastic base wads will require a 1/8 inch nitro card under your slug to give proper height for a good crimp.

I don't remember precisely. I ordered it years ago from Russia...website was Forestcamping or something like that.

I'm guessing you'll get above 1400 fps with this light weight slug.
Probably so. The original load is 1 1/8 oz. My slugs are 3/4 oz.
On a side note:
My friend has a KS12. The shell in its original configuration will shoot just fine in the semi automatic shotgun on the low recoil setting.
I reloaded several of those into 00 buckshot for him. They “shoot” just fine with an awesome pattern. However, they won’t cycle. I watched from the side and there isn’t enough recoil to bring the bolt system far enough back to eject the empty hull.
As I shoot them in single shots and pump guns I have never experienced a problem...
Why did that happen? I dunno. So make a few to test if it’s for an automatic.
@@mcschneiveoutdoors3681 I have a semi-auto bullpup 12 gauge. It will not cycle the Federal low brass #8 shot 1-1/8th oz rounds. There is enough weight in that load to generate recoil, but not enough powder to cycle the action. My bullpup is what they call gas assist action. Recoil alone will not cycle it. Gas pressure is generated by the powder burn.. More powder, more pressure. So, without knowing how much powder is in a given load, we rely on the low brass/ high brass indication. Everything I have bought that is high brass, cycles my gun. Here is the other side of this equation. I made some solid 12 gauge slugs and loaded a few into the Federal low brass 2-3/4 shell that came with 1-1/8th oz of #8 shot.. My slugs weighed in about 1-3/4 oz and they cycled. So the added load weight seems to have increased the recoil enough to cycle the action, regardless of the low gas pressure generated by these rounds. My conclusion is either increase the powder or the lead to get semi-autos to cycle. My quest for the "cheap" slug load continues.

I just loaded up some test rounds for us to try out Monday. These I loaded with 16 grains of Titegroup, 9 pellets of 00 buck. I don’t remember the wad...😐. Roll crimped with an overshot card.
If those cycle on his light load setting, then I will make him up a box.

The only thing I’d do differently if firing out of a AR or AK gauge DO NOT CUT DOWN THE SHOT SHELL Unfold the original crimp, remove pellets an Saybo place slug then roll crimp to be able to have a FULL SIZED SHOT SHELL FOR CYCLING PROPERLY! They don’t tell you this in these videos dramatically shortening the damn shell causes feed and cycling problems trust me!
If you unfold the original crimp, you can’t roll crimp it as you suggest.
I have an AK type 12 gauge and you correct in that the OAL “can” affect cycling.
I load this for single shots and pumps.
Many shotguns can feed shorter slugs like this including those super short aguila mini shells. Depends on the shotgun.
*I have always believed that , ^With Slugs... and a roll crimp , the 'Over-SHOT Card' is unnecessary.^*
They are not. But my roll crimper gets up against my slugs and before long the crimper is full of lead. So I put an overshot card on top

Never shoot that cartridge in a 3" chamber as it`s to short unless you want to expand your shotgun chamber.
While that makes sense and it may happen..I’m thousands of those into a 3” chamber with no problem.

You are playing with fire. Just buy slug loads if you need them. I recently watched a video where this clown put a .50 BMG shell into a 12 gauge pump, and managed to fire it! Just because you CAN do something, doesn't make it safe, or smart. That .50 BMG round will generate more than 2 1/2 times the pressure of a PROOF load, and could turn your gun into a large frag grenade.. There's a lot more to a shotgun load than just juggling weights around. For whatever small gain you might experience, is it worth a catastrophic explosion? People who experiment with reloading are the ones you read about. Sometimes they get Darwin awards.

I agree with the .50 comment, tho. That is stupid. Bout the only shotshells in the shelf are steel loads for water fowl and the large boxes of field loads.
I’ve personally loaded shotshells for decades without incident. I understand pressures, loads and chokes. I never push it. If someone doesn’t feel comfortable doing this then I highly recommend they don’t do it.
I also load handgun, pistol and rifle rounds. The tolerances for those are significantly lower so I follow strict load recipes. Shotgun is a little more forgiving.
You sir are completely wrong in you assuming what he is doing is dangerous. Well anything you do is dangerous but this is completely different. Go to the website BPI and all your worries will be put to rest. Lyman and lee make the molds he is using for this reload.

I will say he didn’t me it with ill intentions he was just trying to air in the side of caution. And that’s all fine and good but that’s all it takes nowadays to get something banned or made illegal. One person saying something is wrong or “ dangerous “ be they don’t know anything about it. That’s what happened with suppressors the Hollywierd made them out to be some kinda assassins tool. That completely makes a gun shot noiseless and that’s so dam far from the truth. So now it’s extremely hard to get one into today’s age miss information or judgment of anything needs to be nipped in the butt. I wish it wasn’t like this but it is information is at a premium and anything that goes against the status quo is deleted.
