Benne is a word from several African languages (Mende especially, I think) that survives in Gullah (Geechee) African-American culture and the general dialect of Coastal South Carolina. I grew up on benne wafers. I thought it was just sesame. They use the same word in the Bahamas I think. Colameco is great. Love how he is interested in everybody's food.
