I feel like the PS VITA itself could use an episode on here. An amazing piece of tech beloved by its fans and thoroughly forsaken by its creators.
a longer style video on it could be very interesting, the vita has always been my favourite console, and the one i still use the most with my favourite lineup of games of any console, and seeing more channels cover it is always nice.
2 years from now put stadia on this series... Don't get me wrong I think it's the inevitable future. But I think amazon would do it.
@@lucasjohnson5803 The problem is you're never going to beat Nintendo in the handheld/mobile department. They have like a 40 year head start over everyone else at this point.
@@LordofSadFac I disagree. Vita had a great first party exclusive. With Uncharted, Gravity Rush, TearAway, Call Of Duty, Resident Evil, ect ect. Tons of BIG title games only for it to flop. Sony pulled the plugged quick because it just didnt profit. I shame because we, who had a Vita, knew the potential of that amazing machine.
I think I remember people making fun of the Vita when it came out, like "Oh it's just a glorified PSP lmao". I never payed attention to it after that and never really heard from it again, but obviously the platform itself turned out better than I expected in hindsight.
All I'm going to say is that Vigilante 8 was dope.
Agreed. And I loved rogue trip
It was amazing, I'm mad I could never track down the first 7 though.
Vigilante 8 reboot when
The best parts of Vigilante 8 were the combat and the 70's cliche characters, how can you not love John Torque?

@@crtg4672 Ever heard the JR skittles compilation? If not, look it up.
I love Twisted Metal Games. 'Black' was a masterpiece. Still hoping it will eventually return with a proper sequel
One of my all time favorites, I still play it weekly.
@@sketchtown6663 i was just playing it a bit ago on my comp its great
Tentacle Trap Madter piece for story telling is absolutely right
@@Benjamillion That was never the issue for me, I was more concerned with the fact that they spammed Ice Missiles, and had unlimited weapons. It is REALLY annoying get shot by a Reticle, then a Zoomy and then 2 Satellites all from the same opponent with no break in between. Also, I'm convinced Shadow had a larger blast radius on her special weapon as A.I. because I would get hit from it even if I was a Minion's length away, when I couldn't do the same a Mr.Grimm away from the target with that special.
I LOVED Twisted Metal 1&2 so much and played 'em as much as Tony Hawk 1&2. But when I got Black with my PS2 for Christmas, I just could not get into it no matter how hard I tried. It just didn't feel right in general (to me) especially the controls. It was also so much darker (literally visually) and hard to tell what was going on at times. Happy to know you all enjoyed it though.
I would love a remake like they did with the Tony Hawk 1+2, but don't know if most people would even care beyond the older fans. Because, Destruction All Stars for PS5 is just not cutting it.
I would definitely play a new Twisted Metal game if it ever happened.
Here's hopin' on the series.
Same
Same
Give crossout a try. Its the closest thing to the real thing since the real thing
They have had multiple cancelled attempts if I remember correctly
Car Combat died as it lived, as burning wreckage.
(This kinda felt like a abridged "Wha Happun" for Twisted Metal)
but twisted metal is awesome
Vigilante 8 and Vigilante 8: 2nd Offense are awesome games featuring funky soundtracks, varied special weapons for each vehicle and environments were quite destructible. Upcoming consoles would offer great possibilities for such destruction, but for current publishers it’s easier to make barely interesting open world maps with grind-based missions.
Fun fact, PS2-era Twisted Metal developer Incognito Entertainment also created War of the Monsters, one of the few games that offered satisfying mayhem including big monsters. I’d happily play a remake of that game too!
War of The Monsters had a secret on one character that would turn them into the robotic Sweet Tooth
I honestly miss car combat games. I'm hoping we see a resurgence of them at some point. Maybe the indie scene could breath a whole new life into this hella fun, if stagnant, subsection of games.
We're getting twitch shooters and low poly stuff from Indie devs, so I'm sure it's just a matter of time before someone pulls the trigger (no pun intended)
Grip combat racing is hella fun
During the rise in popularity of battle royales would have been the perfect time for a resurgence. No idea why no one decided to bring back those franchises during that time, huge missed opportunity.
@@099rjZ absolutely not my cup of tea, but it seems to be doing well for itself. Hopefully it leads to something that doesnt look like a rejected Fortnight mode.
I've had a idea for a indie game about a cross between third person shooter and vehicular combat heavily inspired by Twisted Metal and the nu metal aesthetic.
Despite the problems it had I enjoyed the hell out of Twisted Metal 2012.
The online multiplayer was a fun break from the popularity of FPS's during that time.
Yeah, at it's core it was a fun game. The game was overall mechanically sound in terms of gameplay and physics, but it was disappointing that there wasn't a full roster of characters and that there was racing in the game. The things I really DO enjoy from TM 2012 were the Electric Cage matches and the boss fights. Those were really the bread and butter of the single player imo. Black is my personal favorite of the series, but even still TM 2012 isn't bad at all. I will say I'd rather play it then Small Brawl, that's for certain.
Still playing twisted metal black every weekend, my buddy comes by for some beer and we play for a few hours.
Both Twisted Metal: Apocalypse and Twisted Metal: Revolution both sound like awesome ideas and I'm sad to hear they got rejected.
We can put those two with TMB2: Harbor City and the "American Roadtrip" that was supposed to have Sweet Tooth as the host instead of Calypso, while also dressed as Uncle Sam.. (aka TM4 done right, Id assume)
Who knew Twisted Metal of all franchises actually had a handful of scrapped ideas. Kinda sad they never got to see the light of day.
I was disappointed to find out "Turn Signal 420" wasn't a real game.
Damn. me to.
Fuck. Same.
what it was ?
Car Combat isn't dead, it's only sleeping, like Batman's parents!
So sleepy
Bro, that's dark, but I love it.
*sees bullet wounds on their chests*
Damn, now that's what I call heavy sleepers, both were shot mid nap, yet they still never woke up......wait...oh...
To be fair, Twisted Metal Black is heavily implied to be all in Sweet Tooth's head, making it less a reboot and more 'side story' to the main franchise. 3 and 4 were ungodly stupid story wise and the universe of 2 was where it was at, so it was a wise move to tie Head On back into the storyline of 2.
I think we can all agree Head-On is the REAL Twisted Metal 3, either that or Rouge Trip considering that game was made by Singletrack, the same guys behind TM2.
Ask David Jaffe himself, each title wasn't really supposed to be direct sequels, the "it's all in my head" plot line has been played out through TM2, Black and Head On. Aside from that, it doesn't really make sense since there are several alternate endings anyway making it unnecessary to try and have one solid outcome. But the biggest problem with these games also comes from it's founders jumping ship from company to company and never really just stick it out. And also there's the fact that Sony owns TM as well.
i'll never understand why vigilante 8 only got 2 games. The world, the characters, the arenas, the gameplay was all fantastic for the time. To me it felt like it had so much more going on compared to twisted metal.
My brother and I grew up playing Twisted Metal and Vigilante 8. And until this day we are stuned that Vigilante 8 isn't recognized by the qualities that you pointed. We always considered Vigilante 8 the best among car combat games. Sadly it never got many releases.
No mention of "Cel Damage"? It was a multi-platform release in the early 2000's, and even got an HD rerelease. Even on Switch, as I recall.
I vaguely remember that game, and had no idea it had a rerelease, much less 2. I might have to check it out.
Wow didn’t know anybody remembered that game, it was actually a fun game
Came here to say this, probably the best car combat game there ever was

Such a great game
Great way to start the year, with the depressing world of the game industry.

Road Rash introduced me to Soundgarden. Till this day Outshined is my favorite song of theirs.

@James Har_en's free throw attempts did you the TM1 ending videos that were left out of the game?
Ive been looking for the draft for YEARS... I forgot who wrote it but he said in an interview that he finished a first draft before sony shut it down.
@James Har_en's free throw attempts Who said that? I haven't heard about it til now.
The TV show is actually happening, with none other than Samoa Joe playing Sweet Tooth! Pretty inspired casting for that one ngl
@@joshthefunkdoc Physically anyway. Will Arnett is doing the voice. I’m not gonna get my hopes up since there have been literally zero good video game tv adaptations so far, but I hope it’s good. It can’t be any worse than that Resident Evil show.
I love the smell of anthrax in the mornin'. -Agent Orange, Rogue trip
I remember spending many a late night playing “Turn Signal 420”. Good times.
Considering all these remasters of classic PlayStation games we've been getting lately, such as Medevil, Crash Bandicoot and CTR, Spyro, and even the Wipeout Collection, I would kill for one with Twisted Metal. Having all the cars from both 1 and 2, with online multiplayer. Hell, just remaster Head-On at that point. All that game needs is a face lift, and there ya go, easy cash.
I mean other than Twisted Metal Black through the PSN store, there surprisingly isn't a single car combat game on PS4 that I can think of. Why not break that silence with this upcoming anniversary of the franchise, Sony? Ah well, a dude can dream...
Well that Mad Max Game is on the PS4, so is Wreckfest
@@nickrustyson8124 Fair point, but those games like Mad Max, Wreckfest, even Crossout which is dangerously close to the chaotic gameplay of TM, just don't really scratch that sweet spot that the classic games did in my opinion.
Driving around the wasteland fighting WarBoys is all fine and good, but just doesn't have the same "oomph" as say shooting a missle at the Eiffel tower while monster trucks and dudes between 2 wheels are trying to blow each other up.
Carmageddon Max Damage is a PS4 car combat game. It's not good enough to fill the void of all this time passed without a new TM game, but it's still worth checking out if you consider yourself a fan of car combat games.

Rock N' Roll was and still is amazing. Got my complete boxed copy in my collection!
That game was sort of a sequel to Racing Destruction Set, that one was fun too
I really wish Twisted Metal would make a return. Not only was Twisted Metal on of my favorite games there were people that genuinely liked the game. Also, I think it would fit in this era where Battle Royal games r quite popular because Twisted Metal was about multiple people getting together and trying to see who was the last person standing.
I remember the terrible reality show Sony made called the tester, the series with Arin Hanson in it they were hyping the hell out of the new twisted metal

No mention of Carmageddon: Max Damage?
Yeah a bit sad to see it wasn't here though I can understand, the marketing was very poor and to this day I still see people only now finding out that another game came out.
That game flopped so hard. I bought it for PS4 as a game that I thought would be fun when I'm drinking, but it was absolutely awful.
There's some more to "car combat" - it's always a niche genre, but it still exists in a way. Not doing terribly well, alas, but here's hoping for better developers picking up the flag. At the time of Twisted Metal dying, there was Ex Machina/Hard Truck - shame it almost isn't known in the Americanized game sphere, since it's basically Car Combat: The RPG. Now the developers of that game have made Crossout, an online multiplayer with its own bag of issues and none too strong playerbase... but at least it proves the ironic universality of the niche appeal of car combat and gives some hope for the concept.
Twisted metal taking itself seriously is also a part of its downfall
Seems to be the downfall of a lot of things. Take something known and enjoyed bright or colorful or bonkers or just plain silly and make it more "serious" or "mature" and watch how fast it fizzles.
@@steampunker7 but when black came out it became regarded as arguably the greatest TW of all time
@@bandawin18 Perhaps. Though you could argue some of that was due to a nostalgia bump (i.e. if you were already a fan or the original Twisted Metal this was a way to revisit it) and some due to a lack of competition (not really a lot of other car combat games to pick from.)
Dumb loud car combat is the best
Sigh..
Carmageddon and Twisted Metal, two franchises i hold close to my heart.
Small Brawl was the first Twisted Metal I played. I thought the sheer stupidity of the concept made it that much better.
To me small brawl was my fav twisted metal, the concept of RC cars made it a lot funnier than the other titles
I actually liked Small Brawl as well. Much more digestible, plus it was just using TM2's engine, so was probably easy to make for them.
Small Brawl had a bad ass ad in Game Informer, if I remember correctly it was a picture of a real Sweet Tooth RC all packaged up and on a shelf.
Rogue Trip: Vacation 2012 is criminally underrated. It was one of my favorite PS1 games growing up and it's still fun to play today. If any of you are even remotely interested in the car combat genre, I highly recommend this game. I'm also not afraid to admit that I discovered The Mighty Mighty Bosstones through this game.
I wish Twisted Metal would make a return. It`s one of my favorite franchises.
It was reported on in May 2019 but not sure if it is still happening will still say, Twisted Metal is getting a TV series on Netflix (I think) it maybe possible Sony is testing the waters to see if there is still love for the franchise befor trying to make a new game or they think this is best
I had a kid in school way back when say they made a TV show of it. I think he was a compulsive liar though. Funny to think it's happening now though, but I'll believe it when I see it. But it is kinda dumb to judge how popular a game is by making a show off of it instead of a remake or the like.
12:45
Sorry, Matt. But this case isn't closed yet. I'm going to see what I can do about reviving the series and giving fans the TM they deserve, once I become an animator and game designer.
Anyone that's into car combat racing; I strongly recommend you check out Grudge Warriors on PS1 and Red Dog Superior Firepower on Dreamcast.
Grudge Warriors; Think of it as an old school FPS in terms of exploration and level design, but with futuristic and agile combat tanks.
Red Dog; It's more linear but all about shooting, scoring high, speed running and its spectacular handling model.
They are worth checking out, and show how this genre and subgenre of game could have been so much more...
I still say that Twisted Metal 2 is my favorite game of all time.
Twisted Metal 2 was, and still is, the best of all the Twisted Metal games in my opinion (Black follows it). It was my first TM game on the original PlayStation, and it was an absolute riot to play.
Stainless Entertainment (creators of Carmageddon) are still around. Their latest game was a reboot of the original Carmageddon called Carmaggeddon: Max Damage (which later turned into Carmageddon: Reincarnation for some reason).
Man, seeing videos posted January... 2020 I still can't believe it, happy new years to you all

Does Robot Wars for PS2 also qualify? It was similar in many ways and was a lot of fun!
One car-combat action game that definitely needs looking into is "Pursuit Force" and Pursuit Force 2: Extreme Justice"
Crossout is pretty decent. It's free to play and pretty unique. You design your own vehicles from the ground up, and it's surprisingly fun. It does suffer from the typical "free to play" trappings, but I think it's worth checking out

I know it's virtually impossible and TM doesn't carry the same weight as a... "WHEN'S MAHBEL!" recognition, but I wish they just remade TM2 with modern graphics and all the jazz that implies to make a remake.

Turn Signal 420 was such an underrated gem
Hot Wheels Extreme Racing is like Full Auto - the focus is on winning the race but you're free to destroy the other racers on the way there. Super underrated game, and my favourite racing game ever.
I would almost say that Quarantine was the first of this genre and it still holds a place in my heart to this day. Especially the music on the CD!

No mention of Cel Damage on the GameCube? Twisted metal aesthetic never appealed to me, but something like cell damage would be cheaper to make and appeal to the fornite crowd. Matter of fact if this genre was rebooted as f2p with non realistic graphics it would take off.
We need one more twisted metal, just one morrre. Not over-complicated like tm2012, but nice n simple like tm1-4
Yeah, I think the originals really had something going with their tone. They were loud, chaotic, and brutal, but they avoided being edgy by still being silly and not taking themselves too seriously. Just a bunch of psychos causing mayhem and trying to kill each other over a wish that's going to blow up in their face and make us laugh.
The TM2012 wasn't even complicated.
How is twisted metal 2012 over complicated
Brown Cow 😂 the ends felt like watching the Leprechaun movies n knowing the wishes were gonna backfire but u still anticipated them lmao
MrAmazing79 It was just too far from the originals. Like that video you posted is a perfect example. You didn’t launch missiles, and follow them up to some king sized boss, it was just a simple boss fight with another car. Ill admit it was cool and different going against a giant Hammerhead in the 2012 game, but growing up playing the originals in the late 90s early 2000s made me miss the basic gameplay that made Twisted Metal what it was back then.
The Carmageddon games were great.
If I remember correctly, Harbor didnt make it out of development because one of the team members actually passed away during development (either cancer, illness, accident, etc). The team was basically pretty depressed and hurt about it, talked to Sony, and they quietly cancelled the project out of respect for the person gone.
From what I recall hearing, it was multiple people, and they died in a plane crash.
Oh, and that it was also made up, as admitted in the game itself IIRC. I don't remember WHY they chose to make up a fake story about people dying, but they did. I guess it was to provide an air of mystery?
@@LonelySpaceDetective thats pretty fucked up when you consider 1 or 2 people died during the production of one of the best JRPGs Panzer Dragoon Saga during development due to overwork. Same thing also almost happened during Sonic Extremes development as well. :/
Also, flophouse on Konami, and specifically how they bent over their flagship franchises over a table one at a time.
This video was more about the rise and fall of Twisted Metal than car combat in general. I was hoping to hear more details about titles like Rogue Trip, the Vigilante 8 series, Destruction Derby Arenas, Motor Mayhem, Cell Damage, and how about RoadKill? That was a game that tried to bridge that gap between car combat and the growing open world game design. I love the channel. Hope you might do a part 2 to this one and cover more of these other combat games and how successful they were and if they're still worth playing today. I like Motor Mayhem and Roadkill.
Holy shit Rogue Trip... It's like a hidden memory just popped up after that image showed 😂
In college, a friend had Twisted Metal. We didn't like it the first few times we played it. However, one night/early morning, we stumbled home, put Twisted Metal in the Playstation and realized that the secret to making the game fun was to have a BAC at least twice to three times the legal limit to drive a real car. After that fateful night, we thoroughly enjoyed Twisted Metal for several months by just getting pissed drunk before and/or during playing it. (Games usually didn't hold our attention longer than a semester. Except for Goldeneye. That one never got old as entertainment for our drunk asses.)
A big thing you forgot to mention was that some of the Incognito team members actually died during the development of Harbor City.
That was the final push that made the team want to stop alongside Motorstorm's popularity.
