Remember when Midway tried to copy Mortal Kombat? - The Flophouse Files
HTML-код

- In this episode of Flophouse Files, we investigate that time where Midway tried to emulate the success of it's own series, Mortal Kombat, to not the greatest effect. But in the end, if eventually gave us SSAPO! So it's all good.

I worked with a dude who worked on MACE : The Dark Age . He brought in the original character design cards they made for the game . I saw at least 10 different characters that did not make the game , and some variants . They used the design cards in focus groups that they would hold in his area , they would bring in kids to pick what they thought was the coolest character was and then rank them . This is how they decided on what characters to use in the game . Well narrow down the choices from what the designers made .
Your a liar
interesting,thanks for this info
Bro, what? You have to tell me more about the unused characters lol. I'm probably the one Mace The Dark Age fan around.
I still have the N64 game, that was my MK back then bc I was too broke to buy MK lol.
I want to congratulate the person that made Koyasha she was one of my gaming crushes.
Imagine a Primal Rage getting the MK9 treatment.
With Godzilla and Kong as guest characters.
Like kamen rider ultimate climax?
@@GiordanDiodato For real. Just ask Pharoahe Monch
Rochasaurus yeah, but it should have 1999-2000 Godzilla and original Godzilla so we can finally have them battle it out and see who is best, oh and also should have some Jurassic park dinosaurs, the original t-rex and velociraptors vs the JW indominus and new velociraptors.
Oooh, and mk 1 like mini game but instead of test your might they have test your bite. Just a random fun button mashing mini game every 3-4 levels and the faster you mash the harder your bite and you have to bite harder to get through wood, then a person , then a JP jeep and then a Japanese building etc
And ad the Cloverfeild monster
I swear everytime matt started naming the characters with the mk theme i couldn't hold back the laugh
If someone ever does a RUclipsr MK fan game, we know who's doing the voiceovers

"EXOTIC ASAIAN BIKINIA"
"CRINGEY NATIVE GUY"

"LIEFELD REJECT #967"
"BOB FROM ACCOUNTING!"
I'd love to see more roll calls: other game rosters, dollar menu items
Would of preferred to hear the original ones, since his own take on it was horrible

This feels like an episode from a video series that never existed
There is a series, it's called "Death of a game" by N.S
"Welcome to... the Twilight Zone"
Mace felt like a fighting game lost to time and had potential.
Sciurus Alpha Agreed. I enjoyed it
The world just wasn't ready for the reign of Pojo
I was shocked with the footage. That game looked good enough to be a PS2 game
@@dyldragon1 I agree. It looked way ahead of its time.
I still wanna see that MaceXWeaponlord Fic!
Funny how Midway tried to copy Mortal Kombat this much yet they hated Primal Rage with a burning passion.
And then eventually they would publish Primal Rage themselves for Midway Arcade Treasures 2. Lots of irony!
Software Agents TV That’s why I bought that collection lol
They cant copy something they created.
Atari created Primal Rage, Midway bought it.
@@WaffleAfterHours but they created motral kombat nothing the draw from it is copying.
I remember playing War Gods all the time at this pizza place when I was a kid. it was a lot of fun but the MK parallels were blatant before I ever dropped the first quarter.
I rented BIOFreaks repeatedly, and when the copy went on sale I bought it. Never did beat Ms Mutilator, but all in all had fun. To this day I remember one of the levels had a banner with pictures of two babies allllll the way at the top, like the only way you'd see it is flying as high as you could go and at a certain angle. I figure they must have been a devs' kids. Those babies are in their 20s now....
I'm 90% sure that Kotal Kahn is a reference to War Gods
It probably is
Matt has to be one of the best content creators right now
Great, the cool intro is back!
1:58 - Instant Sub-Zero falling. Thanks for reminding me about the incredible SGB let’s play of that game from earlier this year
That was a great let's play! Lots of laughs.

Alom looks like him, too!
More like his son from dk64
There's still an authentic MACE arcade cabinet back in a navy base in Chicago and Id stare at that things intro on watch for hours along with house off the dead 2 intro and I think it's been laser etched in my brain at this point
I was actually a fan of Mace the Dark Age in the arcades. It's a shame it never took off into a series.
I liked it in 64
Yeah, me too. I used to love playing as Gar/War Mech.
@@notquitehuman5097 Al' Rashid and Takeshi were my go to characters. Looking back, I'm shocked I didn't used Xiao Long.
NRS should just reboot it.
I agree this game was slept on and a hidden gem for sure
Fun fact. 6:46 Xiao Long. Likely origin is one of Bruce Lee's Chinese names, Li Xiao Long, which means (Li last name, Little, Dragon).
I didn’t think I’d see you here, love your videos!
Xiao means "little" in mandarin Chinese, so I thought the developers were going for "little long," a not so funny play on words.
It feels like soulcalibur ripped off this concept.
Fun fact. That’s my Chinese name . My Chinese friends gave me that name. I’m a dragon and my GF’s surname is Li Xiao.

I remember loving Mace: The Dark Age on N64 back in the day. I rented it few times but I don’t remember ever beating it… That game was HARD as hell! The later fighters were almost unbeatable to me… or maybe I just sucked at the game.
A Nowhere Guy No it’s hard as hell. I could never beat Grendal. I only found out what Asmodius looked like a few years ago through RUclips.
Get gud bruh! That's what i would have said to you if I would've known you as a kid
Mace was better than War Gods, thats for sure.
Beating rentals was a MLG challenge for me back then...
AND THEN I RENTED PERSONA...
Nah it was fckin hard for me too lol
MK was never the same after Tobias left.
Didn't know that, which mk version was out when he was long gone?
@@ryanchristensen1799 He left after MK3 I believe. I remember playing War Gods at about the same time that MK4 was released.

So that Bio Freaks plot seems like where we're heading.
I remember playing Mace at a mall arcade, and I got so hooked by it that I saved up for the PS1 version. I got SUPER pissed that it got cancelled, but even more pissed to see that Midway won't bring it back in some form. Not even licensed merch. I'd have loved to get action figures of Lord Deimos and the Executioner.
"Uhm, my name is Shang Tsung....."
I owned Mace. My dad bought it for me when I turned 8 I think. My brother got Podracer.
Still got Podracer. Mace was lost to time.
Couldn't beat it anyway. Nobody I knew could. Never seen it done. My uncle (who passed away 6 years ago) nearly did. It was extremely hype.
Thanks for reminding me of good memories
mace was the shit
many nights and days spent playing that on n64
"muh naem es sHanG ZUNQ"
"alrite"
That shit was funny.
@@richardsalmon2134 It was during that time (MK3) that the franchise really jumped the shark. There was just way too much exploitation going on to make a buck, no matter how cheap it made the franchise look. Between the "tour", the second Mortal Kombat film, the fact that MK3 was straight-up cheesy, and the (albeit guilty pleasure) Mortal Kombat: The Journey Begins, there was no shortage of dreck to wade through.
I've been Trying to explain war gods to people. They look at me crazy like this game never existed.

2019!? More like, “Remember Midway?”
While playing Mace The Dark Age at a small mall arcade in Idaho (What a settling) , I was wondering how a blatant copy could exist while Midway was still a company then, and now I know lol.
(Oh yeah, I use to draw my own comics, and I blatantly used those characters to fight my rippoff Marvel characters, cause MK vs DC was coming soon, and it was all I could think about...God I was fool! lol)
What was Mace The Dark Age a blatant copy of?
@Draven Xzavier fuk u
I really wish they would remake powerstone for the current generation consoles.
Dude. Powerstone was amazing
Only true gamers remember powerstone
Played it yesterday on my Sega Dreamcast.
Dude I forgot about that game, such a great game on such a great system that was ahead of it's time
I played it last year on a DC emulator. Boy, I wished I had played it with my best friends when I was younger and we were close. Now we don´t talk to each other and just two of us remain gamers
Ichiro is just Raiden with a goatee.
He's Mirror Universe Raiden, if we're going by Star Trek rules.
Why in Mace the "EXECUTE HIM!" Had such a happy jingle lmaooo 8:13
Executioner is happy to execute
Lmao
I would've never remembered playing War Gods based on the gameplay videos alone, but as soon as you showed the deck with that sweet 3D button the memories came flooding back!
That "street fighter...the movie", line damn near made me spit out my tomatoe bisque! I wasn't expecting that. You get one of these...👍
Dude u must work all day everyday to produce such quality content. I’m always amazed!!!
The research alone must take a lot of his time. Much Appreciated.
I had Biofreaks back in the day. Good little game.
War Gods being one of the only N64 games my brother and I could rent for that first year definitely did a lot to shape our understanding of the fighting game genre in 1997.
Mace: The Dark Age was fantastic. Loved the character designs and played smooth.
Something is very, very wrong when you have a little sparkly sound when you're flashing the word "Execution!" over and over.
I remember a fighting game that I was obsessed with as a kid called "Eternal Champions" and I think it was for Sega Genesis. The only real thing I remember about playing it though was having the ability to trash talk your opponent during fights lol
Eternal Champions was my jam!
Sega made two Eternal Champion games then dumped the series to promote Vitua Fighter. Eternal Champion is from an American developer and Sega could not stand the Americans having a good tournament fighter.
I forgot all about the executioner and his huge giant pierced nipples lol
FU BAAAAAAHHHH
z0m813 lol noice!
Ayooooo 😂😂😂😂
Well, hey! I got to play Mace in the arcades. Never saw the other two tho. I don't remember who was my main pick ni that game anymore, but I remember having fun.
I had a blast with Bio Freaks on N64 back in the day. That game had potential.
Shang Tsung looks confused like why the hell am I here 😂
Dude the compilation idea you had at the end was %100 awesome! I would pay for that for sure!
That is actually a damn good idea !! I would love a re release collection of all of those games. I remember playing Bio Freaks at a friend's home on the N64 and having fun with it.
Uh... That Biofreaks story sounds a bit too close to reality. It's kind of scary.
Welcome to Neo-America.

Absolutely love the reference to Maximillian and his run through of Bio Freaks with Ssapo.

I just realized how much Midway loved borrowing from Spanish for character names. From MK, Bo Rai Cho (borracho - drunkard); Pojo from Mace (pollo - chicken), and from Bio Freaks Ssapo (sapo - toad).
I never considered how dope the Mace characters would be in MK but holy shit I want this now.
@Dominic Gauntlet Legends and Dark Legacy are amazing games.
@Dominic Pojo is in Dark Legacy
Damn this took me way back to memory lane. I forgot all about these games
Great video bro. Professional level editing and story telling
When you brought up bio freaks it rung a bell. My dad had it for his N64 and i remember playing it as a kid. I didn’t think it was a flop at the time so I’m surprised to hear this info, great vid
I remember after I bought War Gods I was trying so hard to convince myself that it was good game. I didn't want to admit to anyone that I wasted all of that money on a Mortal Kombat knockoff
I really liked Mace
I remember playing it in the "Teens" area of my arcade
This is one of the best videos I have ever seen on RUclips. Thank you Lord Muscles. Thank you.
Damn, what a blast to the past. I remember renting War Gods as a kid but my memories of it looked alot cooler then what it actually looked like. I had no idea how good Mace looked in the arcade. Thanks! I learn alot from your videos.
My grandma bought me Bio Freaks when I was very young. She didn’t understand what an M rating meant.
Just tell parents it stands for 'Mathematik' and it will make you better in school. Then they will buy you the other 'M' titles too.
Ah i remember when games didn't have ratings. Pre '93
I wonder if there will be a vid on Tattoo Assassins
Or Death Cargo.
I kinda love that game, as awful/incomplete as it is.

This is a great, informative video. I remember most of these games, but didnt realize they were Midway properties. Good stuff :)
Loving your content lately. Can't believe I just found you recently considering I watch Maximilian and others. I would love to see anything you can come up with about Bushido Blade or it's spiritual successors in Deadliest Warrior 1 and 2.
Mace the Dark Age on N64 was my favorite clunky fighter back in the late 90's.

Excellent video... Right up my alley. Both war gods and bio freaks had positive reviews back during their lifetime. I rented war gods twice.

Seems like a 3D Killer instinct more than anything gameplay wise
As a kid I remember seeing the Mace The Dark Age box art and always thinking it was Lord Zedd from Power Rangers on the cover.
Oh God, I thought the title might be cheeky, but I'm three minutes in and realizing it is to be taken very literal. Awesome video.
11:44 Best cameo ever.
I said it before and I'll say it again: Mace The Dark Age was more metal than it had any right to be
Lord Deimos for MK11
Bio Freaks was pretty decent. I remember playing it. Being able to cut your opponents hand off in the middle of a battle and the fight still went on...pretty darn cool :D
Amazing video. There is a lot of research here and great way to tell the story.
Lord Deimos is just Lord Zedd in witness protection.
I agree
Dang dude....I owned all 3 of these! But I played Bio FREAKS the most.
I used to love bio freaks as a kid😂😂😂 been looking for years for the name of the game. This made me feel nostalgic. Thank you.
Great content dude, very fun also, keep it going lml
I love how these old arcade fighters treat mundane Japanese names as exotic. Seriously, having one of your fighters named Takeshi isn't that far removed from having one named Steve.
I'll refrain from commenting on other nationalities, but I suspect it's not that different.
Mortal Kombat making Japanese sounding SPANISH
I rest my case
I was young but saw none of these in the arcades.
I recall playing all 3 of these and enjoying them for what they were, even though I thought none measured up to the MK games. I was an impressionable young preteen at the time too, so for whatever reason I remember Pagan's victory jiggle most of all.
When I saw the thumbnail, I had a feeling we'd be talking about War Gods lol.
It would be so cool if he did Bloody Roar video game it was one of my favorite games growing up
I looooved Mace: The Dark Age. POJO! Wins!
