Great review, and I love the title of the video. Others have called it the most overhyped lt29er of 2018 but you nailed it. I have a large blue Ripmo with 942 hoops and factory suspension and couldn’t be happier. The bike flat out rips and gives confidence like I have never had before. I was considering the Hightower lt but after my Ripmo demo in early April my mind was set. I love the long reach, one of my main reasons for buying the bike!
Alex...nailed it! Great unbiased review...I have ridden it and it is insane in every aspect (which was limited ). Finding one is the hardest thing right now so I went w the hd4 and I found it to be very similar for my needs. Ibis makes some of the best bikes for sure
Man, this was a great overview. Got into the details that I wanted to hear about! This is in my top 5 for bikes that may make me sell my Yeti SB5+, so it was interesting to hear about it not being as plush. In some regards, I may actually like that over my SB5+ because I'm getting to the point where I'd prefer a do-it-all bike over a big cadillac that I can ride all day. Looking forward to the next vid!
Thanks for another great video Alex. Nice to see you putting up videos. Glad to hear you like your new bike. Last year I got an HD3 and absolutely love it. I can’t wait to see more content from you Alex, thank you.
Well..... boooooo! 😂 Just kidding man, seriously great review! You nailed exactly what I felt in my review of the ripmo and why I don't think it's the best bike for me. I wanted the rear to be more plush and supple but the bike just wants to be pushed super hard and is super responsive. That's why I love bikes though! Every bike is perfect for someone! Now if only Evil would make a 140mm rear 29er - I think that'd be my spirit animal 😂 Side note - your video should be called - the more hype appropriate bike of 2018 - because THE STOKE IS HIGH for the ripmo! Great job man!
I loved this review and want the bike even more because of the detail and negative comments. This told me he was being completely honest. Also I could tell he was a highly skilled & experienced rider who really put the bike through its paces on good trails (I know the trails he spoke of). Kudos for being thorough and carefully explaining your conclusions!
Great stuff man, love the detail you go into with these videos! Definitely got me dreaming about this one. Looking to swap out the Enduro 29 for something that’s actually somewhat playful and versatile. As far as LT 29ers are concerned this one seems about as balanced as it gets
Great video review and thanks for the details. A few questions... Are you running a 44mm offset fork at 170? Did the head badge fall off? If be interested in hearing your impressions of an X2 shock with this frame. Thanks again, cheers!
Great video, any issues with the DW-link trapping rocks and damaging the frame? Also how does the green paint look in person? Maxxis vid sounds good I’m looking forward to it!
Alex what size did you get? I demo'd a M and a Large. I'm 5,9" and the large felt way better. The reach seemed a little long, but I'm thinking a shorter stem will fix that. Thoughts?
Drew Blankenbecler adjustable would be ideal! It’s more about keeping the weight bias the same in each size. A 440mm chainstay for me at 6’1” would be equally playful as a 430mm Chainstay for someone at 5’5” Just my 2 cents.
Alex Chamberlin yeah I tend to agree with there. Still don't dare sell my Yeti SB6c because it just feels so right and I think a part of that is because of the chainstay length I'm 6'1" and about about 235 pounds and can't ride for shit compared to you though.
Do you need/does it help to lock out the rear on climbing? Is that something that the dw-link solves? Currently on a Stumpy and I always lock out for climbs.
Hello! I'm from Madeira. If you recommend Ripmo for Madeira trails, or always need more suspension/shock travel? Is the course of the suspension and headangle enough for aggressive driving in Madeira? Thanks!
Alexei Nekrassov I thought so! I would say for “ Enduro riding” it’s on the racey side of the spectrum, similar to a stump jumper. The firebird 29 would be absolutely insane though!
Great review Alex! How do you feel running a 51mm offset fork on a bike meant to run the new shorter 44mm offset? I’m currently running my Transition Sentinel with the standard 51mm offset fork as well but I do have the 44mm CSU on stand by. I haven’t really felt the need to switch but maybe I should just to see what all the hype is about.
Hey Alex, if you wanted to make this bike more plush and planted in the back... what would you try? I demoed a Large (which was too small for me), with an X2 shock and found the rear end getting hung-up on repeated square-edge hits. I couldn't mess with the shock setup too much but took out most of the compression damping and it was still a bit firm. I know you're not supposed to run a coil on a DW link bike. or is that not true? thanks!! EDIT: You kind of cover the coil thing! thanks.
Hey man i bought a ripmo based on what info you provided on your ig other reviews and yourube of course. I have the gx build with upgraded suspension (factory and float x2) and put some raceface next r carbon hoops with the vault hubs. It pedals really well wide open on climbs and goes downhill well also. I have an sb5 also so i can compare them. Climbing very similar to my sb5. I didnt even notice the slackness of the bike. Going dh picks up speed very fast and very good manueverabilty Only thing was tight switchbacks but i guess most 29ers have probs with tight switchbacks. Keep it up bro.
Wassup Alex! First off, love the channel. I bought my SB6 after watching your vids a couple years ago I think. Great stuff. Sold the Sb6 and now I’m brain dead on what to get next. I had a Ripley LS before the SB6 and liked it but it was a little short on the reach for me. So I’m torn on the Ripmo, your review with others has me pumped to get one but I’m sketched on the sizing. I’m 6’4” about 230 with a pack and I’m worried the XL Ripmo might be small on me. So I might go with the new SB150 in that sexy orange. But that thing is longer than an 18 wheeler. How does the Ripmo handle tight switchbacks going up or down? The million dollar question is what would you go for? Sb150 or keep your Ripmo? Sorry for the long ass comment.
I have a new Ripmo and love it! One issue I've had is in area between the linkage on the back side of the seat tube (in front of the rear tire)... It's the perfect spot for small rocks and dirt to settle into and with the action of the suspension the frame gets beat up. Have you had that issue?
I demo'd a Ripmo and loved it, but ended up going with a lightly used Pivot Mach 5.5. Partly because of the silly long backorder on the Ripmo, but also just to have a smaller overall feeling bike (27.5, shorter stays, etc) for here in WI where the riding is typically pretty tight with lots of little punchy climbs. BUT, will likely own a Ripmo in the future. It just put a smile on my face to ride it.
Hey Alex, great video as always but I was wondering about the pedals your running. How are you finding them in comparison to the Shimano's you've run previously?
Some brands make frames with adjustable geometry, with chain stay adjustment, shock placement, and so on, but it's rare, Nicolai got it. Pole also got longer chainstay. I haven't tried any of these, but they look promising, I definitely need longer reach, and longer wheelbase. Nicolai calls it MUTATOR its a part that can be swapped to make the chain stay longer. I also love that they use angular contact bearings & dual shear pivots.
Which 160mm 29ers are your favorites...really leaning that way for my next bike...have the Scott Genius 920 now and love it but want more travel. Thanks
Hi Alex, you had a yeti for a while, I'm in a market for sb6 atm and I wan't coil in it, do you think it is a good idea or should I stick to stock air shock?
I'm currently riding a 2016 Trek Remedy 29er , which has 140mm of rear travel with a 160 Lyrik up front. The geometry numbers seem pretty similar to the Ripmo but the suspension platform is the main big difference. I'd be curious to find out how much more efficient the DW link suspension really is. The Trek climbs and descends really well, which is why I haven't sold it and bought a new bike yet. The Ripmo sounds like my kind of bike though. Probably a good thing I haven't had access to one.
Chris Yates personal preference. I prefer riding with agile handling characteristics. That way you can drift, jump, manual, And weight your bike more effectively. All a long bike does is increase confidence in a straight line. Not once on a 5”+ travel bike have I felt twitchy in a straight line. Well maybe at 55+ mph down a fire road... but that’s only happened a few times in my life. Basically my point is, don’t by info the marketing. Especially for Enduro, where terrain is so wide spread and diverse. I guess if all the tracks I rode were super fast and straight where I could keep speed up, I would consider it, ex: World Cup dh
I wrote the ripmo and the stumpy 19 in XL . I didnt liked the old stumpy but the new one was so stiff and so supportive in the mid stroke. I am more of a Trail Rider and light enduro. I like playing around, jumping, endo and stuf like this. Greetings from Germany
My buddy has a large Ripmo with a 180mm dropper. The dropper collar is about 30mm above the seat clamp. When he drops the seat and the bike bottoms out the tire hits the seat. He has the seat about 5mm forward of center. I think he is gonna try the WTB Hi-tail, but might have to get a 160 dropper. How is your clearance?
@@alexthemtbr What's your dropper travel though? I guess the other part of the equation is rider height & frame size. There might be a limit to how low the saddle can go?
Ah how perfect haha! I'll hopefully get an ibis very soon, but I'm totally stuck when it comes to picking. The Ripmo or the HD4... I want a very versatile bike that can do gnarly climbs for those very good Off-The-Grid trails but also one that can send it in the bike park. I've heard great things about the Ripmo (and now you haha), I'm just thinking if I really want that little less suspension travel. Now, I know it's not much and I'm probably just delusional but I really want the most I can get as I've heard that you can send it a bit too hard on the ripmo. I definitely want to wheelie and manual a lot and huck it quite a lot. What do you think? And also, if you had to pick, would you have the Float X2 shock or the Fox Factory fork? (I'm picking the GX build and I can only really afford on of them) Looking forward to your Maxxis video! Shred hard!
Eric Sjöström honestly the base model fox suspension is damn good and you could go either way. I mean the hd4 would feel more at home at the park but the ripmo is so versatile. Run both with 170 forks tho! Either one you get
What shock would swap that one out with? Just the elite or something else to get it perfect? I really don't want to demo this bike because I know I will really like it. Haha.
Michael Sowalsky once you ride it your hooked...absolutely doesn't feel like a 29er but wow does it handle everything and is so nimble going up and down...you will switch when you can get one and that may be a while
thx for that, Alex :D This is really the bike I wanna go for. Now you made me think about getting a 170mm fork instead of a 160mm 🤔 It's not about the extra 10mm but the slightly slacker head angle 💭
The Ripmo is a direct competitor with the Firebird? wouldnt it be more comparable with a smaller travel Pivot...confused.. anyway appreciate the review.
Hey, something is wrong with my fork is a 36 rc2 and the slow speed compression is like stock I don’t know why and I just have it since las week. What could happened?
you have to try the X2 on this bike. I have about 200 miles on my ripmo with an X2; it provides so much more traction in all conditions. The suspension still bobs 2-3mm but is extremely manageable and efficient. You should look into it!
After riding everything last year this was what I wanted on paper but it didnt exist yet - didnt think it was coming so soon. Demo'd it in April (stupidly) after buying a bike last October to confirm it was NOT all that great. Felt the same way you do and ordered it the day I demo'd... Question tho...I have a matter of days to switch my order from DPX2 to X2 before it ships...ive read all the mixed reviews there are and still a coin flip... whats your advice to all us buying whom Ibis wont send an X2 to try and dont want to drop $650 more for another shock to try? 😄
My brother you seem to be very on top of thinkgs. Thank you for the advice, however, I'm married with kids and my wife has us on a very slim budget. I'm looking for a bike under 1500 dollars, I'm recently looking into buying a BOSSNUT EVO from the UK but I want to know that is the right choice. Do you have any advice to give me or a bike better than this one on my budget. Please help me out out of Al the RUclipsrs I really believe what you're saying you seem really honest. Let me know . Thank you
Great video and review. Nice to see someone tall review the ripmo. I'm torn between this and the new Bronson. Never owned a 29er but everyone keeps telling me its ideal for a tall guy like myself ( 6 ft 3in) that being said since your 6ft 1in do you find the 29 wheels fit you better or is it just preference for the endurance racing you do? Love the stand over clearance of this bike and steel seat angle. Would be great to be more centered over cranks when pedaling and get a huge dropper in there. I agree on chain stay length on L,XL frames. It's fun and playful at 430 ish but when u crank up the DH speed it would be nice to have it a tad longer for more stability for us giants Thanks for any feedback in advance
Alex Chamberlin new hightower when is this going to drop? Fall I'm assuming since they just released new colors for current LT. So you would take a LT with the new bronson, nomad rear link over the Ripmo? I have to admit that does sound pretty sick set up if SC makes it
Everything you said is what I think about my new stumpy. The suspension on mine is crap. But the bike itself is great. It was a toss up for me with this and the new stumpy
That’s crazy about the dpx! I always just assumed it would be top of the line! And YT I think sm and md are short chain stays then large and xL are longer I like that idea! Don’t remember the lengths though!
Nice bike! I've been considering ditching my older sb5 after I had the rear triangle warranted early this year. The RipMo is defiantly on the short list. Gonna have to find a way to demo....although not very likely where I live.
Hays dominion brakes would be sick on that thing.. this bike is definitely Not underrated!! Every serious rider in my area wants one.. or wanted one at one point.. nice bike great review.
Love the review sick ride, so I surf and I use a traction pad for surfboards that i just cut into strips and adhere to my chain stay under my frame and the insides of my rear stays------the ultimate best mtb frame protection hands down.......don't waste your time with that crap masting tape......BTW camo traction pads look uber dope on a MTB
Great point about the weight! Didn't know it was so light and so it should be. I have been looking for a new bike and the weight of many trail bikes, high end carbon ones, are crazy. Evil frames are heavy also, even Santa Cruz frames like the Tallboy are over 6lbs. for the frame. I just don't get how there can be literally lbs in weight difference between carbon frames. That is like tieing a road frame to your bike, lol. I am leaning toward a lighter duty bike than the Ripmo coming from a 29er hardtail and basically set on the new Sniper Trail from Intense or, most likely the Rocky Mountain Instinct. The latter being less light duty but nt Enduro at 140mm with a light 5lbs frame.
Just ordered a Helm for my banshee spitty going to get a Db Air IL soon after, maybe you should consider switching up your go to suspension components...
I can’t believe you uploaded! Make more videos, you’re one of my favorite youtubers to watch!
It’s good to see u back man. I miss your videos. Very thorough and tons of detailed info that’s helpful.
Great review, great meeting you and the crew at downieville. Thanks for plugging my buddy’s tire too, saved us a long walk!

Yeah, I second that Evil! Lets have a 140mm 29er.

Best review ,showing the bike while you review it is much better than footage and cuts .
Your information is great ,top work mate.
Great stuff man, love the detail you go into with these videos! Definitely got me dreaming about this one. Looking to swap out the Enduro 29 for something that’s actually somewhat playful and versatile. As far as LT 29ers are concerned this one seems about as balanced as it gets
Great review, a lot of reviews don’t get this technical and detailed about the bike design, you should do more of these on other bikes
One of the best reviews I’ve found on RUclips, great job Alex. I have a Ripmo v2 and love it as well. Any chance of doing a follow up review?
Great video review and thanks for the details. A few questions... Are you running a 44mm offset fork at 170? Did the head badge fall off? If be interested in hearing your impressions of an X2 shock with this frame. Thanks again, cheers!
Brenden Westin I took the Headbadge off lol. But 170mm 51 offset
Great video, any issues with the DW-link trapping rocks and damaging the frame? Also how does the green paint look in person? Maxxis vid sounds good I’m looking forward to it!
Really nice detailed video, now I wanna try one of these too. Can't wait for the fancy tire comparison video.
Alex what size did you get? I demo'd a M and a Large. I'm 5,9" and the large felt way better. The reach seemed a little long, but I'm thinking a shorter stem will fix that. Thoughts?
Solid review, I think you covered everything. Had to disagree on making longer chainstays ha! Keep that thing playful
Drew Blankenbecler adjustable would be ideal! It’s more about keeping the weight bias the same in each size. A 440mm chainstay for me at 6’1” would be equally playful as a 430mm Chainstay for someone at 5’5”
Just my 2 cents.
That'd be cool to see! I'm definitely biased due to my hobbit stature
Alex Chamberlin yeah I tend to agree with there. Still don't dare sell my Yeti SB6c because it just feels so right and I think a part of that is because of the chainstay length I'm 6'1" and about about 235 pounds and can't ride for shit compared to you though.
The Geometron G16 has adjustable chainstays - the XL I rode came with 450mm ones.
Do you need/does it help to lock out the rear on climbing? Is that something that the dw-link solves? Currently on a Stumpy and I always lock out for climbs.
How would you compare it to a Pivot 429T? Id like to have a bit more travel without losing efficiency. Great vid by the way!

I’m currently running my Transition Sentinel with the standard 51mm offset fork as well but I do have the 44mm CSU on stand by. I haven’t really felt the need to switch but maybe I should just to see what all the hype is about.
Steven_Bikes it’s such a minor change honestly. It should ride fine with both !
Ripmo vs Scott Genius or Ransom? What would be your pick? Any experience on the Genius or Ransom?
great video! how would you compare this bike against yeti sb5.5? Is ibis a greater climber? How about descending? Regards!
Hey Alex, if you wanted to make this bike more plush and planted in the back... what would you try? I demoed a Large (which was too small for me), with an X2 shock and found the rear end getting hung-up on repeated square-edge hits. Did it affect the pedaling efficiency?

Yes dude class vid, glad to see the content! 🤘🏻

Looks sick man! How are you finding the big wheels? I buzz my 27.5 reign when squashing stuff and am afraid 29 would not work for me.
Joel Irving Mtb I love them! Probably wouldn’t go back

Any chance you've ridden an SB150? If so how do they compare?

Hi Alex, you had a yeti for a while, I'm in a market for sb6 atm and I wan't coil in it, do you think it is a good idea or should I stick to stock air shock?
Smowling the coil is okay but for me I had to ride such a high spring rate to prevent bottom out that it lost it’s only benefit of being supple
I'm on slim side and I don't push that hard, as far as I know, and love plush bikes, I think it should work out just fine.
How do you think it compares to a 5010? And is it as playful/ poppy?

The geometry numbers seem pretty similar to the Ripmo but the suspension platform is the main big difference. I'd be curious to find out how much more efficient the DW link suspension really is. I definitely want to wheelie and manual a lot and huck it quite a lot. What do you think? And also, if you had to pick, would you have the Float X2 shock or the Fox Factory fork? (I'm picking the GX build and I can only really afford on of them)
Looking forward to your Maxxis video! Shred hard!
Eric Sjöström honestly the base model fox suspension is damn good and you could go either way. I mean the hd4 would feel more at home at the park but the ripmo is so versatile. Run both with 170 forks tho! Either one you get
Ah okay thanks!
Also, you're like 6'1" right? I'm the same, did you go with the large or the XL?
Eric Sjöström large!
awsome to see you on an ibis, i got my first one this year myself an hd. now get out there and make a riding vid. cheers!!!
What shock would swap that one out with? Just the elite or something else to get it perfect? I really don't want to demo this bike because I know I will really like it. Haha.
MTB FlowRider just the dpx2 with lsc. But testing a float x2 soon!
I bet the super deluxe would be pretty good on it too
Make a video comparison with the x2 plz !
The long term review never came... or did I miss it?
Which bike will you pick ripmo, HTLT, firebird 29 or the new sb150?
Sick bike! I am kinda over my wreckoning now and want something different, and this is a major contender
Awesome, well said, well informed well spoken, Ive learned alot.
I’m so stoked about your lately videos, and did you remove the ibis logo in front?
Leageof Overwatch I tried to remove logos and badges
Ripmo or Mojo 3? That is where I'm at for my next bike.... Trying to decide is headache inducing haha!
Great video, as always!
One of the best reviews I've ever heard. So many points that others overlook. Now, should I sell my SB6?
Michael Sowalsky once you ride it your hooked...absolutely doesn't feel like a 29er but wow does it handle everything and is so nimble going up and down...you will switch when you can get one and that may be a while
I would highly recommend it!
Looks like Backcountry has frames with the X2...
Also wanted to ask, is that a 51mm offset fork?
thx for that, Alex :D This is really the bike I wanna go for.
Watty Legend! It would be but for my purposes I would compare them.
Hey, something is wrong with my fork is a 36 rc2 and the slow speed compression is like stock I don’t know why and I just have it since las week. What could happened?
Im 6'0 34in inseam, what length seat post and stem did you go with.
Can’t wait for the maxxis comparison!
Alex at 6'1 what size frame did you go with?
Steven Nuhn Large
Didn’t know you got the Ripmo...Excellent Choice!
.....“When I’m not prosecuting the youth for marijuana possession, I enjoy the new, extreme sport of off road cycling.”
Great review, Alex.
you have to try the X2 on this bike. I have about 200 miles on my ripmo with an X2; it provides so much more traction in all conditions. The suspension still bobs 2-3mm but is extremely manageable and efficient. You should look into it!
Yeah ibis sent one to try out. I’ve heard mixed reviews on it. But I’m open ‘
How is the frame holding up after a few months?
How much PSI are you running in the DPX2 shock?
Moritz Hartwig 275psi now. Dropped it 5 psi from where I started . It’s unusually high pressure for some reason
I take it the derailleur does have a clutch? I have a lot less lost chains and chain slap now I run a zee.
Are you riding the transbc enduro?
"this is another low budget iPhone video with some good content" lmaaooooooo true af though hahaha
Thank you
nice review!
will you switch the DPX2 for an X2 in the future?
Afterlife i just did and it gives the bike a more DH, planted feel for sure
Great video and review. Nice to see someone tall review the ripmo. I'm torn between this and the new Bronson.
Never owned a 29er but everyone keeps telling me its ideal for a tall guy like myself ( 6 ft 3in) that being said since your 6ft 1in do you find the 29 wheels fit you better or is it just preference for the endurance racing you do?
Love the stand over clearance of this bike and steel seat angle. Would be great to be more centered over cranks when pedaling and get a huge dropper in there.
I agree on chain stay length on L,XL frames. It's fun and playful at 430 ish but when u crank up the DH speed it would be nice to have it a tad longer for more stability for us giants
Thanks for any feedback in advance
chris calomino you should definitely be on a 29! And the new Hightower is coming out so wait for that one!
Hey Alex, have you ordered the Firebird 29er yet?
Jason Chambers unfortunately pivot has not figured out how to produce a quality bicycle yet.
Alex Chamberlin sorry I thought you liked them buddy.
Alex Chamberlin sorry I thought you liked them buddy.
Hey did you ever break a 36? Because mines casting just snapped in half, and im only 110lbs wtf.
PaNiPu I have not. But a lot of mine creak badly
Ye, mine was also creaking alot. When doing stoppies and such. Thought it was my Headset, obviously not :D
does the 170mm fork void warranty?
Thoughts on the 2019 Stumpjumper? Had a chance to get on it? Might pick one up
I heard they are good man!
Nice! I have been looking at this bike
Nice bike! I've been considering ditching my older sb5 after I had the rear triangle warranted early this year. The RipMo is defiantly on the short list. Gonna have to find a way to demo....although not very likely where I live.
How tall are you? Do you think reach if perfect or not?
Nzd1 Official 6’1”
I like the reach a lot
You still loving this bike alex?
Joseph Comer very much so!
@alexchamberlain What size is your frame?
Noah Johnson large
Are you gonna be giving the new xtr a go?
Adam if a partnership works out I definitely will’
Just ordered a Helm for my banshee spitty going to get a Db Air IL soon after, maybe you should consider switching up your go to suspension components...
