- Duke Street is Barrow-in-Furness' High Streets Heritage Action Zone, designated by Historic England.
Join us as we look back at this important historical area, to uncover the businesses which traded on the street, and the people who lived and worked here throughout the years.
Using historical research and local people’s memories, this short film tells the story of the street, with a focus on a handful of key properties - from its dusty beginnings, through wealth and wartime, to the Duke Street we know today.
An Art Gene & Aerial Artwork co-production.
Shot and edited by Colin Aldred & Aerial Artwork, 2021.
An Art Gene & Barrow Borough Council project, funded by Historic England Hight Streets Heritage Action Zone Cultural Programme.
Supported by Barrow Archives Centre.
This was a trip down memory lane. It was wonderful to reminisce. I remember visiting a haberdashery on Duke street with my grandmother. Its interior told stories. It's name was Langdale Drapers. It might have been mentioned in the film and I'm not sure if it was of historical interest. It saddens me today when I return 'home' to see what Barrow has become. A once vibrant and beautiful town. It had so many beautiful buildings with rich history. I hade a wonderful childhood growing up in this industrial town. Many thanks from Scandinavia.
I‘m German but my brother in law was born in Barrow… a beautiful town is Barrow 😍
I film a lot of Barrow in Furness on my RUclips channel, I found the history you have give us to listen to is just amazing. Well Done Art Gene.
Love it. Thank you.. Born in Barrow but haven't been back in over a decade. So many memories and so informative x
Wow, so good, very informative, brought my attention to details I've never noticed before, the two gas lamps outside The hotel Imperial.
I really hope you make more of these videos! I’m 35 so Duke Street has always looked similar in my life time. It’s enthralling to find out the lives of the buildings we take for granted cos we walk past them every day.
This was really well put together thanks. A good watch.

Beautifully shot and edited! Congratulations Colin Aldred for the technically and artistically accomplished aerial sequences too!
This is tremendous, I love the old to new photo scene transitions. I shall subscribe in the hope that more videos will be produced. Kind regards.
