  • The Royal Terrace Gardens, aka 'Rock Walk', offers spendid views across Torquay sea front between Torre Abbey Sands and Cary Parade. In 2007 a three year project to improve the gardens began. The Royal Terrace gardens reopened on 3 October 2010, with a new illuminated walkway leading up and connecting with the pathway at the top.

As a youngster regularly visiting Torquay in the 60s and 70s and into the 80s. I adored the original gorgeous Rock Walk with masses of palms, shrubs and trees. Of an evening, under floodlighting, it was truly enchanting. When I discovered that it had been destroyed I largely lost interest in Torquay and rarely visit now. I'm sad about such a great loss.

The old rockwalk before they took down all the trees was so lovely though. You walked through beautiful greenery able to see & hear the birds in the tree tops & shaded from hot sun. The views though & between the trees were so lovely. Now much of it is exposed & hard surfaces dominate. Someone claimed the trees were under-mining the path & then they discovered too late that the opposite was true. I mourn the trees.

I cried to see what has become of the once beautiful Rock Walk. Cool and shady with beautiful shrubs and small trees, palm trees and benches set back in intimate nooks where gaps for an outlook onto Bay views could be enjoyed. At night it became a romantic fairy land, as the flood lights in many colours lit up the foliage. It is now a sad travesty of it's former self, a waste and scrubland of weeds and bramble.Ugly in the extreme, a symphony to commercialism, and an attitude of if it don't pay, scrap it.

If staying in Torquay & interested in history a good place to visit is Plympton St Maurice, this ancient town was the original port of Plymouth before it silted up. The old castle, guildhall & grammer school are worth a visit, the castle meadow is a great place for a picnic & there are three pubs. Despite being rich in history it is free of the crowds that make a visit to Totnes so bothersome now.

Been looking at Homes in Devon, Torquay Past Weeks, Bn in Manchester 25yrs this Month, & That was An Interesting Pleasant-ish, Tree & Shrub-less Walk, *Read Sarah Strong Few Below. Quite Sad No Birds or Song No More.. :-( Removing ALL the Trees Idiots!, you'd of thought they'd of just removed a few NOT the Whole Lot, :-( Would be interesting to know how long the walk actually takes.. ?
