  • Join me on an exciting bike tour adventure around Lake Okeechobee! 🚴‍♂️🌧️On the first day, I hopped on the Amtrak to West Palm Beach and started my ride towards Lake Okeechobee. Despite the rain, I pedaled my way to Torry Island Campground, capturing the beauty of the Torry Island Scenic Trail and observing birds along the way.

    Looked like a great day minus the rain. Fun to see the train. I love seeing all the birds of prey that you did. Super cool. That bird at 8:52 was pretty neat. Awesome day of birding. Have a wonderful day.

      This is my first day at Lake Okeechobee. It's the largest lake in Florida and the 10th largest lake in the US. The plan is to ride around the lake. It's about 120 miles but I'm going to take my time and enjoy my time here.

      Torry Island Campground is mostly occupied by snowbirds. I guess they were all in their campers watching TV 😂

    I loved all the birds you saw in this video. Enjoyed all those egrets flying away as you rode down the trail. So neat to see the hawk with the snake!

      I think that snake was a venomous Copperhead but Red-shouldered Hawk didn't kill it. It was already dead someone mentioned it earlier. The weather has improved by now. I'm still riding around the lake. More videos coming soon, as soon as I can edit them. 🙂

    Great first day! The bird grabbing the snake was cool.

      This snake was a venomous Water Moccasin but it was already dead before the hawk got it.

    I’ve got to admit Thomas that I usually don’t watch your birding videos, but you sucked me in with the bike video. Actually, we have so many interesting birds in FL that this may make me pay attention to something other than the dozen or so common birds I see everyday. Great video

      Haha, glad to know that I kind of sucked you in into watching my biking and birding videos, but who knows maybe one day you're gonna start watching birds by yourself but be careful birding is addictive hobby. 😂

    Nice tour of the area! The food looks delicious! I have never heard of Torry Island. I need to go south more. We do a lot of northern parts of Florida. You found a lot of birds. Thanks for showing us around! We love observation towers!

      I love Torry Island Campground and the scenic nature trail. This is a county park. I've learned that county parks are often as nice as state parks. Riding around Lake Okeechobee the "Big O"

      @@FollowThomas I thought that is where you were. On our last cruise, we drove around the left side of the lake. It was insane how empty the area is and how much farmland is there.

    We liked that area. We have visited a few state parks down that way and of course the Amtrak station there! Also, we have hiked parts of the Lake Okeechobee Trail but never ridden on a bike. Loved the train footage!

      That train came out of nowhere over the fields, reminded me of Amtrak on Colorado fields. That's how they actually transport sugar cane. Agriculture is big in south Florida and soil is really dark and rich.

    Happy New Year Thomas!!!!
    Wish YOU happiness and prosperity in 2024
    I hear that, Okeechobee...
    I felt the winter weather in FL was strange this time while I was there. All day long rain for days...
    I could not visit some springs and beaches for my adventures
    Just like in this film, gloomy. Typical FL weather brings sunshine after rain'
    Do you use Gopro 12? I would love to see Gopro camera to improve filming under natural low light.
    I do like Great Blue Heron the most BCO the color of its feather
    Well done as always for your observation.
    I look forward to your new projects in 2024
    I am back home from 3 week- filming trip in Puerto Rico and FL

      It was a rainy first day but each day gets better. I'm still on my bike tour. Uploading more videos in a few days. It's warm and nice and tomorrow it's gonna get into the 80's here at Lake Okeechobee. Take care and Happy New Year to you too! 😊 PS. I use two GoPro cameras 10 and 11 haven't upgraded yet to 12.

    Hello Thomas! My wife wants to know how you video your journey while on your bike. Can you make video on your bike camera set up. Thank you!

    • @FollowThomas
      @FollowThomas  9 месяцев назад

      I have two GoPro cameras. One is mounted on my bike handlebar and the other one is a hand-held one. I take short clips as I go and later edit them together. For birding I use another small camera that has a zoom. GoPro doesn't have a zoom. My long videos are a combination of all those video clips. It takes time to edit but I enjoy this kind of work. Thank you for watching! 😊

    How did you get into bird watching.? We use Merlin app but doubt if we will ever learn by site.

    • @FollowThomas
      @FollowThomas  9 месяцев назад

      It takes time. The more time you spend outside watching birds the faster you learn. Start keeping the list of birds you have already identified that gets you excited. Birding has been my lifelong hobby and eBird has been my big motivator. Download the eBird app and every time you go out into park start the app and mark down the birds you are able to identify. It's a big motivator and helps you to learn. Before eBird I just wrote down the field marks and tried to identify birds by the field guide but like I said it takes time but that's what birding is all about. It's not about the destination but the journey. Glad you're interested in birds it's a rewarding hobby.
