- This is James O'Brien's fiery call with a man who says that the Black Lives Matter movement has gone too far, as he prepares to go to London to protect statues from vandalism.
Black Lives Matter demonstrators are returning to London this weekend to continue their protests that got out of hand with a minority of protesters last week.
But a group of counter-protesters, including Tommy Robinson, have pledged to travel to the capital to stand guard by Winston Churchill's statue.
Lee called in to say that he will be one of those people protecting the monuments and said he felt it is going to descend into black v white violence.
He said: "It's putting a bigger divide over race. There's going to be trouble between black and white people. It's coming."
But James pointed out: "No, it's not going to be divided by race any more than your friendship group is.
"What are you cross about?"

As an American watching these interviews, I really wish that we had more personalities on our airwaves that tore people people's ignorance down with logic like this rather than just shouting over them

In the US, you have podcasts offered by the Atheist Community of Austin (ACA). It's about 20 years now for "Atheist Experience". There are now several different call in shows with different hosts, and different approaches on the platform. They focus less on politics, and more on epistemology.
I love how he always makes them say the quiet part out loud.

I wonder how his black friends feel about him marching up to London to protect the states of the people that enslaved their ancestors. He’s worried about people using BLM to promote anarchy and destroy statues that mean a lot to people in the UK. In a way James agrees with him, that white middle class youths have been using BLM to vandalise public property

I believe a brilliant question to ask would be "What about the Jimmy Saville statue? Why was it ok that one was taken down? It's a part of history too"

My response would be that what Jimmy saville did broke moral standards of the time, colston didn't break any moral or legal codes of his time. Looking back we can say slavery was bad but at the time it was normal, we can't judge historical people by the same luxurious standards we hold today.

I'm an American who started watching Premier League 7 years ago and the amount of abuse black players have taken from "supporters" in the seats is atrocious. I don't understand why it was allowed to happen as long as it was before the league started banning them.

Replying to Black Lives Matter with "All lives matter" is the same as claiming that deforestation doesn't need to be addressed because the three trees in your back yard are thriving. It's basically bringing an issue to the forefront that needs attention now. Claiming that black lives matters is not claiming that any other lives don't, no more than claiming your front, driver's side tire needs air is admitting that the other three tires don't need any at all.

Funny enough I did and thought that was an exception. I commented somewhere on one of those videos that James o Brien started by huffing and puffing and finished with a question clearly designed to trap JRM but which JRM didn't rise to. My comment didn't elicit much sympathy, probably because most people on RUclips know how to champion their heroes without actually giving a fair assessment. I'm someone who agrees with James o Brien against JRM but he was still poor in interviewing him.

What made this apparently striking is the caller wanted to go out and protect statues, even if he didn't know the history behind said statutes. He even said 'but that's history' (paraphrase) What have we become!

I get the feeling that all the people who suddenly care about preserving statues have never spent more than two seconds glancing at a statue in their lives. If it was to do with libraries they'd all be acting like they care about books. Bunch of lying hypocrites.

Imagine being James's black friends (if they actually exist) imagine him ranting and raving how a statue of a slaver is more important than their basic human rights. If only this energy directed at preserving statues of slavers was actually directed at the push for equality just imagine what we could achieve. I find this caller's attitude menacing on a couple of levels, listening to him I was transported back to London of the 1980s where casual racism and bigotry were part of everyday conversation. Living in London as I did then and being a Scot was also not immune to a certain degree of abuse.
However, living in London was the only time in my life I had ever felt really threatened. One incident was when I was with an Irish and Black coworker in a bar and a small mob came up to us and said we don't let N*gger Micks of Jocks drink here. Were it not for the intervention of the barmaid I'm sure it could have gotten very messy.
When I left London to work on the continent in 1998 I had hoped that such a degree of racism and bigotry were in the past. But sadly it seems under this Tory government these people have once again felt confident and safe enough to crawl back out from underneath their rocks.
If you don't like the history of a certain country just go somewhere else.

I'm indifferent to the statues tbh. There really the last thing on the list of changes that need to be made. Let's decrease poverty, crime, increase the standard of living, job opportunities. There is still 100's of buildings that have dangerous Grenfell cladding. Then after all that get's sorted, I'd consider putting the more offensive statues in a museum. Simple.
Maybe if we stopped voting for stuff that hurts the country, Brexit and the tories, we might be able to do those things. We need parties and policies that help to build the country up with investments and growth rather than stifling austerity and telling around 50% of our trading partners (the EU) to go F themselves.

I find these clips so interesting. These guys will eventually break down and admit things that make them look bad. In the USA, people WILL NOT do that. They will either change the topic, do "whatabout-isms", start yelling, or hang up. They know that the argument they are making has a deviant thought process behind it, the other person knows, but they REFUSE to admit it.
Actually, I've watched a fair bit of JOB now in the last week or two after RUclips recommending it, and in 99% of cases his callers do the very things you're talking about - they try to talk over him loudly, they go in circles and employ heavy "whatboutism" or be civil but keep looping around to the same nonsensical line of thinking until they just go quiet and the call ends. Very, very few of his callers actually admit they were wrong about something, which is comforting as it shows that we in the US do not have exclusivity on willful ignorance, bigotry and obnoxious behavior.
In general, we need this guys voice herd everyday in America. From this conversation to political American conversations this man just understands moral. Something that’s now set aside in the general American public and government.
