You are cataloguing one of the most momentous events in living memory and dodging Local Authorities to do it. Yet, locking yourself out of your house is an 'adventure'?
Man! I wish I had your outlook on life.
Keep up the good work, mate. You've got my vote for a Pulitzer Prize.

Someday, the children of Hawai'i will hear bedtime stories of the Legendary Leilani Ninja, his handy Go-Pro, Brave Goliath, and lntrepid Griffin- how he faced down the wrath of Big Daddy, spoke truth to power and spread beauty for all to see across the World! 🌎

I live around a lot of rivers, some larger then others and I have seen them gushing; like in winter, or in the mountains when they gush over rocks, or towards waterfalls. And spread out over gravel beds where the river separates, creating an island of gravel and coming back together again like this lava river is doing. It is so strange to watch a river made of molten rock just gushing along endlessly like a river of water. Absolutely awesome, amazing, and astounding!

Scott, I just have to check with your report regularly. To hear a human voice showing us as it happens makes the films so much more personal. I feel I'm almost there beside you. Please keep reporting, you'll be missed when it eventually stops. Thank You.

    Thanks for the update.
It's the height of bureaucratic stupidity that the locals are denied this viewpoint as long as they stay off private property. These videos could help stimulate future tourism to the island. People who are fascinated by natural phenomena are going to be drawn to these videos and later on to the Big Island. You offer a perspective that is lacking in the USA reports and the little snippets of the event that the short attention span news media provides.

    • @JustBob-sw4rf

KELLI2L2 I fully agree and anyone who's watched these daily volcanoe videos knows what a unique perspective that Scott and one or two others are providing.
The local governmen staff should offer a limited number of permits for local youtubers to go into the restricted areas.

The red sky is when the lava has to flow over a rise underneath, as it makes a separation of the "skin" of lava. When the slower/deeper section allows cooling to develop a "skin".
    Thanks for the videos.

Meant to post this yesterday but the comment section appeared to be down. Coding error I assume.
You are absolutely ridiculous, but we love it! ;P
As for not being able to hear the fissure from your house, there is every possibility that the back side of the cinder cone is blocking the soundwaves and directing/reflecting them away from your home location.
I live about 10-15 miles from Pittsburgh International Airport, and I can tell you from experience, that sound waves can do all sorts of weird stuff. We live directly under a landing pattern, and you can hear the planes quite well as they fly over. But when they turn and approach the runways, their engines can be pointed this way, and the sound directed up the river and creek valleys, and almost amplified. Over head you hear the buzzing as they go over, but as they land, sometimes this heavy, roaring booming can reverberate through the valleys, and the planes can be even louder 10 miles away, as opposed to when they were flying directly overhead.
Another good example is the explosion of Mt. St. Helens in 1980. People within 50 miles of the mountain watched it blow itself apart in total silence, while people 50 miles or more away could hear it quite well. It all has to do with the direction of the sound waves and what may be in their way to refect or dampen them.
My guess, again, is that the open part of the cinder cone of Big Daddy Number 8 is facing away from your house, therefor, the sound is directed and reflected away from your home.

The sound waves are traveling over your head to you house which is above lava dike. Where you were filming from is getting sound waves deflected down off clouds and air molecules. Your house gets the direct sound waves.

I LOVE closeups Scott! GREATJOB! Sorry bout locking urself out of ur house! :-( I locked myself out of my van last week at my doctor's office...costed me $85 for the guy to spend 5 minutes opening my door. Talk about HIGHWAY ROBBERY! I deeply appreciate your efforts in providing up to date reports on 8. I've been pretty upset with the USGS, Military Update, US Defense Forces, and other youtubers who clickbate us with words like "up to date," "update," and "Latest News," etc. then show old footage we've seen from weeks ago. STAY SAFE!

Hi Scott! That river is so cool to watch! It's really flowing fast, and Big Daddy is spouting so high... still!! Just amazing! Thanks for venturing out there! Stay stealthy to those 'predators', so to say, coming by. We don't want that kind of adventure happening, if you know what I mean. But you're always cool about things. The river looks like it has sparkling diamonds along it. Wow, for something so intense and destructive, it sure has its awesome beauty. Oh, those poor people whom this stuff has ruined their homes. I feel so sad for them. I do pray they're doing ok, as far as ok can be in this situation. Scott, if you ever run into any of these people, please let them know that people far and wide, including our community here, are thinking of them and hoping they're doing ok despite their losses. Thanks again, friend, for sharing your world during all of this. Even though I'm not there physically, it still puts a lot of things into perspective. Your videos, chats, and overall company with us is deeply appreciated. Keep up your good works. Can't wait to go on another field trip with you! Take care! ~ Barb in PA :-)

  • @srosenow98
    @srosenow98 6 лет назад +3

Scott, the reason it's louder at your house vs. up close is because of how sound travels, and partly due to the doppler effect.
When Mount St. Helens erupted in 1980, there was a 35-mile-radius "cone of silence" around the peak in which nobody heard a thing - not even the survivors who were plucked away from the devastation.
However, in areas of Washington state like Tacoma, Seattle, (most of the Puget Sound region) and places further north up into Canada and as far south as central Oregon and northern California, people were hearing sonic booms all day long.

In theory he technically doesn't need them. In fact, in all 50 states a press pass really isn't needed. A couple SCOTUS decisions in the last two decades have affirmed citizen journalism is a protected right under the 1st Amendment.
I own a photography business and one of my pieces of gear is a Sony broadcast ENG camera (the big giant types carried by television camera operators). Since I'm not employed by a TV station, I don't carry around a press pass, only business cards stating my name and the name of my business.

Thanks Scott for the updates. The pressure on the levee increases with the flow pressure. I hope the outbreaks on the stream stay small. It was funny but those sounds I thought where birds. But you said they were Frogs. The lava river support system (levees) must be a good heat insulator to keep that steam flowing for 8 miles. Here in the states in Louisiana on the southern coast it's like the Hurricane that will not go away. Dang 7 weeks now. But the Hurricane is not like this.

I think the sound bounces off the cloud cover and makes it sound louder at your house.
When we lived near Fort Knox the booming sound of the Tanks Live fire training was much louder at our house than it was on Post. I was told the sound bounced off the clouds and it seemed like they were right, because the booming was much louder on very cloudy days.

Why do I have a picture of you in my mind, crouching in the dark, then crawling through a window like a cat burglar?! I hope the window you used was adequate in size. It brings to mind an incident that happened to me when our kids were little. We were renting an old farmhouse at the time. Unbeknownst to us the bathroom door could be locked from the outside. My husband and I were both in the bathroom. He was shaving and I was getting dressed. We heard this loud click and when we tried the door we couldn't get out. Our four year old daughter had pushed a little button then she and her brother went laughing to the other end of the house. We yelled to no avail. We had an appointment we absolutely couldn't miss, but the only way out of the bathroom was a tiny little window over the claw-foot tub... Well you guessed it I was voted the one most likely to go out of it without getting stuck. We decided I should shed my dress and just wear my slip as I would have a better chance of making it. You should have seen me, not only did I get stuck part way through, when I got halfway out the window I found there was a drop off over six feet to the ground, because of the curve of the yard away from the back of the house. Once I got partly out of the window I found the only thing I could find to grab a hold of was an old blackened clay pipe that ran up the outside wall right next to the window. I grabbed it and pulled myself out the rest of the way, but because of the way the window had me pinned, I had to hang upside-down to do it. I dare say you get the picture! Well if that wasn't humiliating enough, the house sat in the middle of my father in-laws orchard. The window was in full view of his orchard worker's house, where a couple of them were out stacking firewood. They saw me coming out the window and just gaped! I decided the best thing to do was to put a brave face on it, so I just hopped down from the pipe, like I did it every day, nodded to them politely, and walked around the side of the house and into the front door. You should have seen their faces...It was priceless! LOL I always wondered what they said to their friends about seeing the bosses daughter in-law climbing out a window, in her slip, in the early morning hours, and then walking back into the house?! By the way that pipe turned me black from head to toe and I was bruised down my thighs for a week. I had to toss the slip. I did not spank my daughter either, (tho I may have felt like it), but my husband disassembled that button on the door as soon as he got out. Mahalo

Priceless! Thanks. I had the opposite experience. My 2 year-old daughter figured out how to lock the bathroom door, but could not unlock it. Panic was setting in, and I had to help her. The only access was via a narrow top section of the window, about 6 feet off the ground, and I became stuck trying to get in. The step ladder which I was standing on toppled, whilst I was trying to extricate myself, and I was left with my hips and legs dangling out of the window, head downwards into a washbasin, with a highly amused daughter laughing uproariously at her father, who was firmly wedged. I did escape somehow, and eventually barged the door to break the mercifully fragile lock. I had an impressive selection of bruises around my abdomen which caused my family great amusement for days, as the various colours of the rainbow developed. Needless to say, no lock was fitted to the bathroom door for several years after that incident.

Scott, I locked myself out of my old house once, but I did have my purse. So I pulled out a credit card and was able to slide it in and open the door! I never left the house without locking the deadbolt after that! Thanks for the great footage and enjoyable talk!

Here I thought the lava river was slowing down finally because the surface was looking darker, like it was cooling down. But the USGS said not at all, in fact they estimate it was doing 35 to 40 mph over the weekend. Back down to 14 or 15 mph this week.
