  • Things are progressing as planned on our vintage camper project. Next on our list was rebuilding and resealing the jalousie windows. All the rubber weather stripping was brittle and falling apart, not sealing at all. There were also a couple panes of glass that needed replacing.
Once they're weather tight we can start on the wiring!

Hello, thank you for your video, but it would have been better if you had shown the process a bit slower and actually shown how you replaced the stripping in detail. That would have helped me. Thanks!

Vintage Trailer Supply stocks the rubber seals for rebuilding these.

Ty for going so fast I'm more confused than anything.

    How NOT to do it.
Instead you can remove two screws from the bottom of each individual pane, then remove the bottom rail of the frame and slide the glass out. They can be reinstalled with caulk if you can't find the proper weather stripping.
ABSOLUTELY No need to remove the entire window. And Keep That Wire Wheel Away From The Aluminum! It's too aggressive.

I wish you had broke this down into step by step, but hopefully I'll figure it out.

Hello! My partner and I recently bought a 1976 Millard Caravan and are currently in the process of renovating it. The windows are old Louvres and they require significant attention. We're keen on restoring them and have identified that the mechanism involves a gear-driven torsion rod with some worn-out components that need replacement. Given the age of the model, sourcing the original parts seems nearly impossible. Is it possible to substitute the old mechanism with a more modern one, and if yes, do you have any recommendations for a "louvre repair kit"?

Back when things were made fit for purpose of lasting long, being serviceable and capable of being restored and passed on to future genenerations (not just owners).
People knew how to build things honestly and they did. This window being made of aluminum and glass with proportions that can withstand normal use for decades.
Today with planned obsolescence (product sabotage with the aim to artificially inflate sales) I would not be surprised if they are being made with materials that:
    Crack like plastic
    Self deteriorate like plastic
    Self warping like plastic and
Where they don't use plastic the metal is too thin suffering metal fatigue and
A design to prevent dismantling and refurbishing (to block DIY life extension like in the video).
Note: plastics can now be blended to deteriorate at rates they want them to deteriorate in the sun or even just on their own. Conversely they can blend plastics to last forever both in structure and retain their color even in the sun (public trash/rubbish bins/cans)

Anyone know how to fix one that won't crank open? It lets me open it just a crack and close it.

How do you lock these windows. Are the easy to pull open

Good idea, I would love to salvage my vintage windows, but the cost to reseal and replace isn't cost effective. Basically, the 1971 Comet was rotten throughout, the aluminum had rips in the lower half, about all that I can salvage is the fresh water tank, black water tank, the wiring and the tires and frame.

So.... you do all that careful work, and didn't prep the mating surface of the exterior sheathing around window opening? Probably something I would also forget.

You might want to avoid inhaling the stuff you grind off old aluminium.

Nope. You’re both wrong. It’s an awning window.

Casements are hinged on the side, like a door, and are one large pane.
These are jalousie or louver windows.
