The UK and AU had a SMS presence and can provide more of a complete picture of Sega's legacy. Most remaining US Sega channels tend to disregard the SMS era which is a major omission cause Sega first defined themselves as the gaming leader during the Sega Master System and Super Scaler era. I actually grew up with Sega and SMS in the US but find it hard to find dedicated videos for the SMS or its games aside from the many Brazilian ones. Glad we are the same generation albeit different continents that experienced Sega's technological marvels in the arcade while also being able to play the same titles at home. Still remember the exact place and details when I first saw and played Space Harrier, Outrun, and Afterburner. That is how mind blown I was as a kid that I can still remember the details surrounding a game after nearly 40 years. Sega Master System was also my first home console and have tons of memories playing the home versions of super scalers. Again, really fortunate to run across this channel that recognizes Sega's overall legacy. It becomes all too forgotten over time which is a major shame cause we know firsthand they pioneered the gaming industry.
Thanks Temjin, and so glad you enjoyed this one! Love that the SMS was such a big part in your gaming life, you very really hear that from the US which is a shame. The Master System was pretty huge in the UK and was our first exposure to Sega on console. We do have more Master System videos planned in the future - Dan
@After_Burnett Outside of Japan, only New Zealand, Australia, and Taiwan also got the SG-1000. So technically New Zealand was the earliest territory to start with Sega.
Love the Sega master system! Great look at these great games, both in the arcade and sms, one thing that was not really covered was the great catchy music of the sms games - awesome!
Fantastic buddy I really enjoyed that but how could I not!! Brilliant commentary. I enjoy all of these games, although Outrun and Enduro Racer probably my favourite. I prefer these over the arcade ports to be honest.
Cheers Oli! Definitely agree on Enduro Racer, Outrun I think compliments the Arcade nicely, it's such a lovely port with its own take on the Outrun aesthetic! - Dan
Heh heh, just watched this in a sneakily little minimised window in my work PC, whilst my boss was sat right behind me. I loved the SMS ports of OutRun, Afterburner & Space Harrier - never played Enduro Racer. I never actually owned AB or OR, but I borrowed them off other kids at my school. I had a secondhand copy of Space Harrier though, that I bought off some kids who lived near me, and, likewise, it was actually one of the first SMS games I played. But Hang-On was literally the first SMS game I ever played, as it was the game built into my console and because of that it's probably the one I remember the most fondly, it was so fast and looked amazing. I'm curious what other superscaler ports are coming up in part 2, the only one (off the top of my head) I can think of is Galaxy Force... Oh, wait, Thunderblade just popped into my brain too!
Some interesting ones do materialise late in the SMS's life, with one Enduro Racer style transformation. For a great many of us, I think these ports were our gateway into Sega on console, which is why we have such a fondness for them! - Dan
You mentioned sprites about Space Harrier. Apart from the main character and its shots it do not use sprite at all I think. Most of the enemies is just animated tile background. Hence as you said the cutout around them
Enduro Racer is a weird one because it actually had pretty good home computer ports of the arcade game, so the Master System version, although fun, does wind up looking a bit anaemic. I can only assume they didn't want to release another motorbike game so close to Hang On, and cutting it down to fit onto a smaller cart made it a decent "budget" release.
I had all of these for the Master System. The only departure was Enduro Racer, that was a fun arcade game, the home version was ok. All of these also received and upgrade/sequel on the Genesis/MegaDrive except Enduro Racer.
Master system outrun is great much better than the other conversions of the time esp the c64. Chase hq on master system was also great. Still have them both.

@@SEGAGuysI always thought the UK had better taste in many things including gaming. Look forward to more SMS videos.

Ah man, MasterSystem was the dream in 1987 😎
Love the Sega master system!

Outrun was the one for master system, it also had FM sound support and it's really cool to listen to that soundtrack via emulation.
I know so little about the SMS, but this seems like a good start. Thank you for the informative video Dan!
Cheers Shane! We're planning to produce more SMS content, so hope you enjoy it! - Dan

Good stuff Dan. Love these titles. Played a fair bit of Enduro Racer to albeit on game gear!
Cheers Martin! Makes me think I should get the GG version! - Dan

Master System is still my favorite console of all time, and Phantasy Star is my favorite game of all time.

I really wish master system made a bigger impact in the US as I didn't know this system existed until over a decade after it was done
Got my megadrive to master system converter and a ms flash cart now. Money well spent
