For drilling the steel rod into the cane: acquire a tap and die that matches the diameter of your rod and make threads on your rod for about a 6 centimeters. Then take a metal file and file into the threads, and make a tapered "V" to a point with the groove following all the way to the tip. Make sure the groove is deep enough to allow the threads to act as a cutting surface, then use you regular technique for boring the now threaded rod into the cane. It should embed itself and hold because it is threaded at one end. It will also pull itself into the cane once you get the threads into the tip of the cane. You could also just buy threaded rod to begin with and then all you need do is to cut a cutting grove and taper the end down.

Thank you! I’ll try this one out and see if that works well.
