Just order mine last week. The amount of details and all those gimmick moving parts are just what I had long been waiting for. Einta really did a fantastic job on this sky defender. This is what I called, "Thinking outside of the box creation.
Casual snap builder here who built Bandai kits for a year and only just dived into 3rd party kits with the SNAA hunt and kill. I was eyeing the Judge and/or the motor nuclear Ao Bing for my next build. But this kit… wow! It just blows me away. I have to have it. Beautiful promo photos. Nice to get real pictures and not just renders. I haven't gotten much into custom / 3rd party but PapaGundam's got me itching to try some of these out.
I got mine shipped earlier this week, and the box is massive. it's easily 10-15lb, and the box size is 24 x 16 x 9 inches. You could fit over a dozen HG boxes in the Sky defender box, and it isn't like there's just a bunch of empty space. I need to do a video of the scale and unboxing of this thing. The instruction manual is basically a novel. its nearly half an inch thick. All parts are painted as you see in the promotional images, and the deluxe comes with metal parts and etching stickers. I could brag on this kit all day
@@dekaks.4724 yes. The manual is 150 pages, with 125 pages being actual build instructions, the rest is pose and gimmick instructions, and decal placement. I have the skeleton for the wings done, and the skeleton for the chest, and I'm on page 47, and have emptied 8-10 runners. There are over 50 runners and 1108 pieces. Total height with base and wings is right at 14.5-15 inch tall, with a 19 inch wingspan.

I still remember my first kit (out of 2) in the late 80's. It was the Super Dimension Century Orguss, and I was so excited that I started taking the pieces before reading the instructions. I still managed to put it together although missing a few parts. 😂
It would be awesome to get the detail of a resin kit, and not have to deal with the resin. Platic isn't good for us, but the resin is incredibly toxic. Gloves, mask, eye protection, purple power, solvent based paints. this is an awesome idea. your Hi-V is one of your best paint jobs.
Cheers for this review Gundam. It's great when you're straight to the point about things, without needless intros or hyperbole. The kit looks incredible, and shows the quality you can get from ABS plastics these days, especially as this is a snap fit kit! If only Western manufacturers of model kits (looking at you Forgeworld/GW) looked at the sheer quality coming from the East and aped it. My Forgeworld kits are invariably busted in some way, straight out of the box. Considering the resin Thunderhawk gunship is £500+, it just screams lack of QA. The reforger market (you could describe it as a grey 3rd party manufacturer market) actually fixes a lot of GW's manufacturing errors with their '3rd party' products.
The sky defender shares alot of designs with the gravity judge if you look at both properly, and I really like that the judge is setting some sort of 3rd party standard in quality.
Bandai: "How dare you call is lazy!" Also Bandai: "Hey, want another unicorn or RX78? to go with the 20 other unicorns and RX78s?" I wish Bandai would start making more grunt suits and kits that arnt the hero suits. I'd love an MG Aries from Gundam Wing so badly, or even a HG Virgo would be nice.
The problem is demand and money. 3rd party can literally just takes the base design and remake it. Bandai Literally has to invest to patent and all the R&D for their designs. Which will cost way more hence why popular gets usually the first and best treatment. Unfortunately.
That's unfound criticism. This kit most probably took 2+ years to develop. You are comparing this single debut product with Bandai's releases in span of years. And other manufacturers release color-swap too if they do manage to survive past single release.
Amazing, I am really glad you are getting the attention of these company's aspecially after your long history of being a gundam fanatic! I hope one day these kits can even come here to brazil instead of being manually imported and then sold for 5 times their price....

@@DCG909 Thats fair, was hyped to getting in era thunderbolt but months after into this hobby, I started not to like to colour or head design. You're right tho, its very busy to the point where you can't tell much of a difference with some or all the decals. Still getting it because I'm hoping the build experience will be my favourite by far seeing how much effort Einta put into just the manual alone (150pgs)
@@epistarter1136 That was one I was considering, but the stargazer was a limited run (and managed to get my hands on a pre-order one). The thunderbolt I'd just remove the extra fins and plaster them shut, the heads of the in era's are plain ugly imo, perhaps to avoid copyright.
Love seeing things like this. I honestly have gotten to where I don't really bother with bandai kits anymore, there are just more of the same. I look for kits like this as I like to put my time and energy it to things that are different.
It's an impressive original design, I genuinely though this was an official Gundam from some manga or novel spinoff I've never heard of. I could see the Federation blowing billions in tax payer money making Anaheim develop this monster but then not actually fielding it outside of a one volume manga side story.
This gundam is so amazingly detailed. It has that mythical vibe that you normally see from Chinese kits and i am not a big fan of it being too much though i appreciate the artistic idea of it. But this is so mechanised that it looks like a transformer transforming. And yes, who loves gundam more than transformers? I do

I arrive in the comments the day of getting my shipment notification from The Gundam Place and 24 hours after being informed of a Hi-v RESIN CONVERSION KIT available for preorder, and I for one can't for the reaction and subsequent content in the weeks to come. The ULTIMATE 3rd party Hi-V in 2024 is going to be sick
Well I know you probably won't see this but did you see that they officially announced it with a big 30 minute video? I also got my pre-order in for it.
I could see these being cool and worth a grab for something if they have what I want to make. It looks like easy to make dioramas with something this snap and pose level.
As much as I appreciate the insane amount of details and parts separation of these kits, I often find them quite overwhelming, it's a trending with a lof of 3rd party kits/figures/etc. Bandai gets a lot of shait for the simplicity of their kits and this is often mistaken for laziness but id rather have that kind of plainness and have room for customization than just the sheer density of kits like these.
You know, just occurred to me.......what if all these super intricate designs are all very long term testing for construction of ACTUAL mechs based of these innovations in gunpla and model kits. Like think about it, wouldnt it be cheaper and cost effective to demo and make these things on a small scale level like this, and sell it to recoup research and development??? ITS GENIUS. You could go about designing mecha to eventually full scale builed later when you have the core issues of power and other design constraints done. Call me crazy but these and other similar inner frame designs could be the base design blueprints of future mecha weapons.

Don't count on it. Bandai made the absolutely amazing Gundam MkV and still continue to make it extremely limited run P-Bandai only at a $90 tag before shipping and tax. All these 3rd party kits do is push Bandai to make their stuff P-Bandai for greed. And that's fine by me, because 3rd party kits are now the absolute new hotness with the most bang for the buck. MGEX costs over twice the price of a Judge or Ao Bing and doesn't even have a metal inner frame. Shame on you Bandai
But buy from USA or local retailers or buy from AliExpress or something, maybe Gundamit, because most Chinese sellers are connected vicariously to the CCP and you don't want your money going to the CCP in any way.
It looks great, I'm just curious on how much it will be, with a lot of interesting specs and many pieces, I'm guessing that, on the low bar, it will be similar in price with the PGUnleashed

Depends on what kind of newbie, those hatches are screaming "broken parts" MGEX have those issues because bandai use softer plastic to increase durability during snapfit & ease of snapfit, not re assembly My experience with 3rd party gimmicky kits usually only mean 1 thing, you pick which option to display, or else every thing will break Not to mention paint scratches, good god
Also, mechanicore isn't much of competitor They make unstable product that's not fit for casual builder, essesiantly statue & can't cover mass production I'm not sure if part missing is still an issue on their releases
@@user-lynKx the back skirt if you look closely and the two long thrusters or is that a gas tank. Edit: the front and side skirt also is a more detailed skirt from Sazabi, and the whole lower backpack too, they just replaced the missles with Hi-Nu wings.
Imagine half of those 1k+ pieces fall every time you pose this thing. Will wait for initial reviews before I actually jump to the hype to see if its worth the money. Hoping it is though this looks like a banger on the shelf

Actually judge is just combination of Gundam seed kits.And this one is like hi nu+strike freedom.

Hobby Mio is resin paint has resin in it and it's lacquer you can spray it very low pressure I do 5-10psi and it covers great.
You know what I want Bandai to make again? That Turn A gundam with the butterfly wings. Something novel like that again.
I might save up a bit to get my hands on this. Especially if it comes with left weapon holding hands.
