    Standard Steel Inserts fail by cracking, expanding (and getting stuck!), corroding and just don't sound good... There are some great options available to improve your guitar’s tone and performance. In this video, Adam Reiver of FU-Tone.com demos 3 different saddle inserts. Hear for yourself the differences in sustain, clarity, definition and warmth between (1) Standard Steel, (2) Titanium, (3) Naval Brass. Tremolo block insert. So get your headphones on and check it out!

    Brass gave the balance a very nice upper midrange (4kHz-8kHz...a broad bell sloping up through that range) and tight, but boosted lower frequency range (150Hz-75Hz I want to say. A bit below that 250Hz-300Hz "Mud-Range" which most top 40 Mix Engineers will cut out of guitars religiously using EQs). I really loved it. Titanium was great for highs (12kHz-16kHz-ish, it's somewhere in there...closer to 15kHZ-16kHz I think from a couple listens...with a slope down to 12kHz-10kHz. I was trained by a Top 40 Engineer, and this was very interesting to me (I'm designing a few custom guitars for my recording studio, and I will be ordering Brass Inserts after this).

      I realize this is an old comment, but did you try the brass, and recall the change. I don't hear well over 12KHz, but the Ti sounded thin to me, but more sustaining. I added brass inserts to an EVH Wolfgang, and feel that it thickened up the tone. Brass bridge parts make a guitar sound more like a brass instrument to my ears. Not so much the honkiness of a horn, but the overall tamber of a brass instrument if that makes since. Steel sounds cold to me. Ti sounds airy. Just comparing my perspective. I don't know a lot about the function of particular frequencies aside from playing with EQ a few times.

    Always been a big fan of brass for it's weight and longevity. I made a bridge for a nylon string classical guitar a decade ago and even on nylons it gives it that extra punch. I love brass nuts too, especially for bass. Will be doing a new build soon with a FU-Floyd, I dig the different colors and options.

  • @TheNoiseFloorav
    @TheNoiseFloorav 3 года назад +1

    The amount of pumpy compression happening with the high gain settings leads to being unable to tell a real difference at all when the high gain is on. I'd want to hear how the transients are coming through, but every time you pick a string the compressor just sucks the volume down.
    For clean, the differences may seem more apparent, but they could also be summed up to a difference in picking intensity when playing each demo. After all, each demo had to happen after time passed, giving you the opportunity to change the blocks and do another setup on a floyd rose. That's not gonna happen fast.
    As an audio engineer, I'd like to see the differences after measuring the DI of each on a spectrum analyzer. That way I could be more positive what's happening and could rule out variables that may skew the results.
    But, with that being said, now I've got something to consider and shoot out. Thanks!

    • @solsinclair1909
      @solsinclair1909 2 года назад

      Interesting. With gain the differences are compressed beyond comprehension, but to my ears the clean demos were quite stark in difference.

  • @michaelangeloh.5383
    @michaelangeloh.5383 5 лет назад +2

    There seems to be a slight difference indeed. Though I don't exactly see how the blocks pushed against the "back" of the strings, where they didn't even leave the saddle yet, affect the sound... Then again, I heard a difference in the trem-block demos, so... I guess these little blocks still in contact with the strings affect something as well. - Now, how about the locking nut or the inserts on those?... Maybe a brass guitar? (Which I'm sure exists in today's world, but anyway. haha)

    Maybe not something you can openly talk about, or perhaps you don't care, but what do you think of the material GraphTech uses for their "StringSaver" saddles?... The sound is one thing, and it's good and all, but I have still broken too many strings on both fixed and tremolo bridges using their saddles. - At least by just replacing them straight-up. I didn't reduce string breakage until changing the setup, but anyway...
    I'm considering replacing the saddles of a Strat-type Wilkinson bridge with StringSaver-saddles that have those "graphite" inserts where the strings rest. Though I know you can get those saddles entirely made of brass, what do you think (or know) the difference in sound is? Although a big part of the StringSavers is also less wear (because of less friction). - Maybe even better would be the saddles made of bass PLUS those graphite inserts, which they do not seem to have. And don't know if that would defeat the purpose.

      I am a huge skeptic of things myself, but if you understood the science behind exactly what causes sustain and how sound travels to and from the nut and block, maybe you would desire an upgrade. The biggest points of tonal difference are going to be at the nut, the saddle, and the saddle insert holding the string, followed by the tremolo block. Then obviously the pickups. If you take a generic everything above and face it against the upgraded parts, the difference is unreal. Believe whatever you want but this is nothing like the stupid tonewood debate.

      Adam, after a string change, are the Ti and brass indented from the stings? Will there be strings slippage?
