As a fellow communications student, I find myself wondering how people plan on getting through life without communicating. Honestly, communications shouldn't have such a negative image. As a society, we cannot do anything without communications. I'd say the major deserves better recognition.
I made most use of my coms major. I always wanted to be a radio host and just a spokes person. The major helped me so much and i love what i do. People just listen to one or two people on RUclips instead of getting their own experiences in.
I'm a rather introverted person who took a leap of faith when majoring in comm. studies. Talking and persuasion and connecting are not my strong suit..however, I would say there is more to this major than just running my mouth lol......it's a major that has several branches connected around the analyzing of behavior, artifacts, and text, etc .....it really makes you think "okay what is this message actually saying?" ...a read between the lines sort of riddle is how I see it...its easy to hear people talk (for some more than others) but to actually listen , that's where it gets more complex and where misunderstandings are likely to occur
Thank you so much for sharing! After switching my major from Psychology then to education, I’ve finally decide to pursue my real passion for media and communications with a social media minor!
I earned a degree in communication studies and I started to look for work in the PR field, but I could not find work in that field. After being out of school for a long time, I went back to school to earn a second bachelor's degree in computer science. I found a job in the computer science field and I've been working in that field for several years. Looking back, I wish I would have had better career planning when I was working towards my first degree. I should have explored different career options, taken advantage of different internships, and combined communication studies with other fields of study.
Same here I recently graduated with a degree in communications and have been trying to get a job in the communications field but haven’t gotten any luck. I do want to get a second bachelor’s degree in marine biology.
Like any degree/major, it all depends what you do with it while you're in school and after. I got a bachelor's degree in computer IT and it took me over 2 years to get my first IT job. Looking back, I could've gotten a help desk IT job while I was in college or even before college just to get my foot in the door. I currently work in the IT department of a large corporation while getting my master's in communications and I was told after a few classes, I can shadow the marketing team to get my foot in the door before I graduate.
I really appreciate your explanation and passion for communication it’s such an art form and science to it all at the same time. I majored in organization communication and minored in AFRAM studies. It’s interesting cuz in my current job I literally utilize my learned skills from communication and my education from AFRAM.
This is so right. I am a junior in communication major right now. At the time I started this degree, I wasn't sure about what I would do. But now I want to do so many things because with each passing semester I learn something new and I want to implement all of that in life. At this point, I am thinking the exact same thing that why do people hate it when they can learn so much about living a life in this major. Choosing communication as my major was absolutely they best decision I have ever made!!

You cleared my mind a bit. I took a gap year after graduating high school cause I have this dream of studying abroad, but I'm not even sure what I want to study and I feel bad that deciding is taking me so long. This video calmed me down, perfectly and directly boosted my confidence 😁
I’m in this same exact boat (minus the gap year but I plan on taking one once I have my associate’s), down to the studying abroad. I try to remind myself that it’s a decision that will impact the rest of my life and that it doesn’t need to be taken lightly
Im glad I came across this video because a lot of what you said resonates with why I choose to go for communications ! I feel like it is something I can use for almost anything in the future !
Fellow Comm major here. It is true that employers are not looking for Comm majors, but as you mentioned, it is the soft skills that we learn that is transferable to most - if not all - careers. The issue is getting in the door. Comm is a good major to get an undergraduate in then going into a Master's program. It is also a good idea to get a certicate in something useful (e.g., Project Management). You mentioned Project Management but that comes in the form of a degree or certicate.
From the VERY start, you sold me. I agree with your points about STEM and non liberal or social science majors. I too am a Comm major and I found this video very helpful. Also, would you be open for counseling a brother? Haha.
Idk what to do with my life so this might be good for me cause I have an interest in social media marketing & social media management. Even though I’m better and kind of like memorizing better than projects... I don’t really want any science degrees even though I’m good at that😅 I like that this major is really broad but hopefully it’ll be easy to get a job without a graduate degree. One thing though... I haven’t had to do public speaking so much, but many school require all students to take a public speaking course. My PS course was really easy though even tho I get a lot of anxiety! With any liberal arts major you will have to present occasionally. But yes, there is also a lot of reading
It's definitely much easier to get a job with a communications background/degree. My experience has been amazing with this degree. Social media, advertising, storytelling, journalism, intercultural communication, translators, HR, team building - you would be surprised at how much you can do with this degree.
