My Mentor has A Comms Degree and she makes over $185k+Yearly Bonus. She is very successful within the world Of Corporate Comms and recommends the degree 📜
Best classes in the Comms field that I took were "public speaking" and speech writing. It is such a general field, but I believe many universities have specializations within the 'Communications' field (PR, Advertising, Journalism, Political Comms, Digital Media, etc). Specialize and then augment your studies with internships, co-op, work, etc that is in your field of specialization. Also seek outside university, industry-recognized certifications.
Girl this was so informative and THE best explanation I’ve found on communication. I have tried to explain to family many times what a communications degree is. I’m just going to send them your video. ❤️
As a communication major from U.S. my degree is truely the "jack of all trades" degree and I love it for that reason. I personally didn't have any intense readings (which is good because I hated reading and math) instead I learned public speaking, interpersonal skills, interviewing, film , and journalism. I love it a lot because I did learn sooo many different skills.

This was a great overview of the communications degree. I am starting the journey while working a full-time job. I wanted to know a general understanding of what I was getting into. I really like the advice your dad gave you. I hope things worked out for you,
I'm interested in going back to school for a communications degree with an emphasis in social media/digital marketing. I graduated last year with a fine arts degree (major in studio art and minor in psychology) with the intention of getting into art therapy. First semester into art therapy grad school and I don't think it is for me. I'm so nervous about the switch, but I think I would rather have a more stable job
I'm in the process of applying to colleges right now, and I've been having doubts about applying as a communications major due to all of the misconceptions you mentioned. This video was very encouraging. Thank you!
As a senior in communications major at the University of Maryland, I find a lot of what you say to be pretty helpful and accurate. I will note that my course load seems to vary a lot from yours (to start I have no idea who those theorists are). I'd say the best advice was to write essays about topics/industries you want to build a career in. Communications degrees give a lot of leeway when you're writing essays or giving presentations. Communications work is needed in almost every industry, so be sure to capitalize on the opportunity to close the gap between your interests and your future career! Good luck to everyone this upcoming semester.
@@itscheyennecassidy I had classes on interviewing, public speaking, ethics, film/journalism classes, public relations. Those were my classes and that they were about.
Hi Cheyenne. I'm a Cameroonian (Equatorial Africa) and studied Journalism and Media Studies while holding a part time job as a communications officer. I do believe that a communications degree encompasses presentation skills. Though it's not entirely about that. So your university friend was partly right about that because the expectation is that as a comms graduate you should be able to do well in multiple careers be it in movies, music, journalism, and advertising etc. These jobs require you to be a good communicator to some extent
That was so good and so encouraging! Grateful for this video. I'm half-way done with my classes for my communications degree and I'm anxious about steps to take next! This was very helpful!

Being a student i feel really bad when people belittle communication studies. I always wonder, "have I done the right thing to choose this degree, will I get a job.." Thanks a ton for making this video and boosting my morale.
In case someone asks me again about my degree i'll just send a link to this video bc everything u said is honestly on point. Probably the communication theory that took me a while to really understand is McLuhan's "the medium is the message" or the media ecology theory. I reported about this 1st yr 1st semester and idk how I did it. Also another course that we had which I think is really important is Risk, Disaster, and Humanitarian Communication. We had this just right before the pandemic started and thankfully I kept all the notes and materials for the subject bc reading again the different theories and models on how to craft messages when we are in a crisis has made me appreciate more my degree. I am a journalism major, I had my internship last year at a local newspaper and all of the stories I wrote were about or related to Covid-19. And I owe the success of my internship to my RDH notes 😄
I’m so glad I found this video! I am a 3rd year CC student and will be transferring to uni after next sem. I plan to major in health communication and minor in both sociology and writing. I was watching another vid a bit ago that said that a communications degree would get me nowhere and that really upset me. I just want to work in the healthcare field but not on the practicing side of it. Also, I’m a shy person, but I have a way with words, but my mom believes I have to be extroverted to major in communications. I know for a fact that’s not necessarily the case. I’d love to see a vid talking about the various job opportunities for both introverts and extroverts, or something along those lines!
haha you've literally listed all of the comm major stereotypes but i commend you for your self confidence and your confidence in a comm degree. i will definitely look at making a career video for comm majors. thanks for the idea!

I have never subscribed to anything on youtube in my life until I watched this video and became hooked! I started pursuing my degree in business administration this year (currently an RMA in healthcare) but recently during my studies found myself starting to question if I was going down the right path for a future career. After seeing your video, you inspired me, girl. Very informative video, I then the next day contacted my student advisor, asked lots of questions that you explained in your video, and decided I needed to officially request a "switch of major" with my college to bachelor's of science in communications, and I got accepted! Thank you so much for your courage and honesty! Can't wait to view all of your videos! Thanks again! You rock! :)
This video really is helpful. I'm a high school student who as of now is very much confused on what I want to study for college, causing me to stay up researching constantly. At first I thought I'd go into marketing but when I looked into that, I found out that isn't the thing I exactly was going for nor something in my strengths. Then I came across a video with someone who had a communications degree. I became quite curious and began to delve into what it was. When I say many, and I mean MANY videos would have determined the degree useless and it was making me more and more hesitant. But I was still curious because even then, those videos didn't clarify one thing that you did just now. Which was, since the degree seems to be a versatile one- it can be paired with anything. This clarification made me quite happy. Now knowing I can pair this degree with something of my interests, still be able to gain a livable income, and it involves skills that i'm quite confident in. It just seems right to me. So thank you for making this video and answering a few of my many questions regarding the degree and major.
Hey! I'm so happy I was able to help. A comms degree is really a jack of all trade master of none situation so once I was able to approach it from a very narrow field such as television studies it become much easier to see how the degree was useful. Good luck in which university you choose!

I’m also majoring in communications. What career paths are you considering? I am not that interested in journalism or social media. What are you interested in?
hey lucyyy so what i liked most about my degree was understanding how language and images are used to create stories that we tell ourselves to help us make sense of the word. so i wanted to get into television to create content that would make people see the world differently. i just posted my life after graduation video where i talk about how that didnt work out 😅 but now with my degree im in marketing where i still use language and images to promote my companies products over our competitors. social media always gets forced down comm majors throats its so annoying but i would check out marketing roles (which you might want to get a certificate in marketing for) or PR!
Hi, if i am interested in jobs that include article writing, or developing written content for brands or organisations in the future, do you think the degree of communications (news media) is a good way to enter the industry? I would like to specialise in writing!
Hey there! Really enjoyed your video and take on the communication degree as a whole. Your experience in college sounded wayy different from mine. I graduated with my B.S. in Integrated Marketing Communications ( Sports Comm emphasis) and an M.A. in Integrated Marketing Communication. I have the same problem as you when it comes to explaining to people what I got my degree in lol. I like sports and want to try to focus on either the marketing or information aspect, but I feel like I'll have to get my start in another sector like in social media management or just graphic design with photography and videography included. Currently searching for a job now 🙏🏽
I want to major in marketing, but that requires acceptance into a very competitive business school for the university I plan on going to as well as MATH, and I am bloody awful at math. I think communications would be a good fit for me but I am truly worried about all the stereotypes and the idea that I won't make enough to support myself or that I will find myself in dull work. I'm so stuck :(
I am currently working on my communications studies AA degree, after 7 years of working at an unfulfilling yet very stable job at a big well known company. I was afraid to commit to a communications studies degree straight out of high school precisely because when I would be asked "what are you going to school/college for?" and I would respond communications studies, I would get the same response that you mentioned "it's useless", "not worth it", "be smart about your career choices", "what is that?". Very well put video, and thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Sending this to my mom she is so confused on what I go to school for. She started watching Jane the virgin and the lead is trying to get a book published and when she goes to grovel to her publishers I told my mom there that’s what I’m trying to do 😂
The first actual helpful video. Thank you. On another note would you say it’s better to get a journalism major ? Would it vary much from a communications major ?
ya theyre very different. journalism would only get you work in a news room or a newspaper it would be harder to apply to marketing jobs with a journalism degree. so i would imagine your pool of job postings would be smaller. a journalism degree will focus a lot more on writing style and being impartial whereas a comm degree will focus more on high level societal problems like ideology and politics and media
I'm wanted to know more about communications cause I have interest in it... Could you plz tell me what are all the courses I have to do for communication director post??
Hello, I live in Germany and just graduated at communications Bit find it Hard to find a Job. I have no experience in the Field, Made no internships and only got rejections so far. Do you have some advice ? Maybe it’s Better in other countries? I speak french german English and Italian..
I am planning on starting a degree in Communications this Spring Semester. I'm interested in working for nonprofit organizations that are environmental or humanitarian focused. Do you have any advice for me? Really liked your video! Thank you for taking the time to make it for us :)
hey thanks for watching glad you enjoyed it! the best advice i can give you is to make sure every single project you do is research oriented towards environmental and humanitarian issues that way you can reference projects as ‘work experience’. also i would look into what everyday people think about these issues and how big business effects what we do and dont talk about in regards to these topics. good luck!
i feel like a journalism degree would better prepare for technical writing because theres a lot of emphasis on structure and citing references in my opinion
I heard that getting a film degree is useless and in mass communications you can write for TV and radio. Does majoring in mass communications help getting into writing in film production after graduation?
ok cause i always thought to myself maybe if i read it in french it might be easier because nothing is lost in translation even though im not like super fluent but now i know he’s just impossible PERIODT this is helpful lmfao
This video was super informative and helped a lot! Im also just wondering what your take on a getting a college degree in Advertising & Marketing communications management and then continuing to get a Bachelors of Comm or something similar at a University after would be?
hi tira glad you got something from my video! i actually have a bachelors of arts in communication and a marketing certificate from the same university and ive found that in job interviews it gives more context to my degree since comm can be so broad. so i would go for it!
I went into college thinking I’d study international relations, but became hooked on communications after taking a course about media and society. What a happy accident 😃
They are intertwined in one way or another. But I think communication is a a common part in all phycology little wonder, the subject communications skills is taught in every course...
Psychology often focuses on how concepts ( biases, stereotypes etc) effect the individual. This can go over how the effects they have on an individuals brain and/or how they react to there social environment. Sociology is how do these concepts affect society and people's social standings, the community, economic well-being, etc. Communications blends the two together but they would not go into as much depth as psychology and sociology
Hey I really need some help I’m thinking about studying communication and media and I am really interested in it yet I’m not really sure about it because I’m more of a creative and becoming a creative director or art director of some sort would be my ideal career, I‘m just not sure if studying this will send me in a rather highly marketing and business based route and how I can manipulate my experience to make it into the more artistic side of the industries ( like film, art or any content production ) or if studying communication and media may not be a good idea in this case I would love any help or responses, I‘m highkey desperate for advice ! Thank you already :)
hey communications is a perfect degree for a career path towards being a creative director. working at an agency requires someone that can make connections between things that people dont normal see a connection between. comms will teach you that without all the sales price distribution stuff u get in marketing
So what is the difficulty on obtaining a good degree as well as a job in this field of studies?. i'm currently serving in the military, (Navy) and wish to start school ASAP. only thing is i've had a problem figuring out what i want to major in. i'm from Los Angeles and i feel this would be a good degree to have beneath my belt when i leave and settle down in LA. any feedback is highly appreciated! I started looking into majors and this just caught my attention. I’m beginning my research and came across this video which was exceptional. Like anything else, I’m sure there’s a lot of hard work and dedication needed to excel. Just would like to enhance my knowledge more on the topic. THANKS 🙏🏼!!
Hi Clara, great question! I would say that communicational studies will probably try to branch out into larger topics like cultural studies, cultural policy and media studies. I think Linguistics and communication studies would be very laser focused on semiotics, which I also made a video about. Hope that helps!
I've been out of school for 3 years with my BA in Communications, I should say it really IS a "jack of all trade" major. > I'm someone who was indecisive of what to Major in, since it was tough to find what I was most interested in. > College allows you to niche things down. In my university I took on more general skill roles that are sought after; leadership, mediation and etc. >(the most recent expeience which convinced me) While attending school, like many other folks, had a job. I thought I wanted to stick in the profession of cooking and then pursue my degree at some point. I was going to become the GM of a Chipotle (food), but decided that becoming a Relationship Manager at JPMC (sales / banking), I learned I wasn't to fond of that and found another job, which I'm currently in the pre-employment stage (tech training).
Recently I am have a thought of going back to college to obtain a degree because my highest education level is just high school diploma. So I got two options from a college which both also are online study, English and mass communication major. I am having trouble choosing one of those. I am afraid that I choose the wrong path. What skills I will learn in mass comm?
“A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.” Is the full quote.

Thank you it's really useful and well said 🙂
Such a great video!
vERY HELPFUL VIDEO!
Currently searching for a job now 🙏🏽
good luck on the search! going to social media then pivoting back to sports is a good strategy
@@itscheyennecassidy Thank you so much! Keeping positive on my end for a decent job🤞🏾🙏🏽🙌🏾
Thank you baby girl
I want to major in marketing, but that requires acceptance into a very competitive business school for the university I plan on going to as well as MATH, and I am bloody awful at math. I think communications would be a good fit for me but I am truly worried about all the stereotypes and the idea that I won't make enough to support myself or that I will find myself in dull work. I'm so stuck :(
aw man dont believe what people say! if ur bad at math communications is the way to go. trust me!
Aside from your Communications and Marketing degree at York, did you pursue any master's in Communications after your undergrad?
Great video
I'm wanted to know more about communications cause I have interest in it...
Could you plz tell me what are all the courses I have to do for communication director post??
Hello, I live in Germany and just graduated at communications Bit find it Hard to find a Job. I have no experience in the Field, Made no internships and only got rejections so far. Do you have some advice ? Maybe it’s Better in other countries? I speak french german English and Italian..
hi there! I made a video about entry level jobs for comm majors ruclips.net/video/3xRvblQQh4Q/видео.html hopefully this helps!
I am planning on starting a degree in Communications this Spring Semester. I'm interested in working for nonprofit organizations that are environmental or humanitarian focused. Do you have any advice for me? Really liked your video! Thank you for taking the time to make it for us :)
hey thanks for watching glad you enjoyed it! the best advice i can give you is to make sure every single project you do is research oriented towards environmental and humanitarian issues that way you can reference projects as ‘work experience’. also i would look into what everyday people think about these issues and how big business effects what we do and dont talk about in regards to these topics. good luck!
@@itscheyennecassidy Hi, Is it best to land a career as a technical writer in journalism or communications degree?
i feel like a journalism degree would better prepare for technical writing because theres a lot of emphasis on structure and citing references in my opinion
This video inspire me I love it
My dad: Oh! You wanna learn about Public Relations, it's just like journalism, you just want to write newspaper?
Me: ... DEEPLY QUIET
hahaha the misconceptions are sooooo real
I heard that getting a film degree is useless and in mass communications you can write for TV and radio. Does majoring in mass communications help getting into writing in film production after graduation?
i think if you want to write for tv an radio its more about networking than your degree
Even in french Michel Foucault is freakin hard to understand I can not imagine with an english translation 🤧
ok cause i always thought to myself maybe if i read it in french it might be easier because nothing is lost in translation even though im not like super fluent but now i know he’s just impossible PERIODT this is helpful lmfao
I am changing my major to strat comm and I also thought presentation skills...sorry
This video was super informative and helped a lot! Im also just wondering what your take on a getting a college degree in Advertising & Marketing communications management and then continuing to get a Bachelors of Comm or something similar at a University after would be?
College diploma **
hi tira glad you got something from my video! i actually have a bachelors of arts in communication and a marketing certificate from the same university and ive found that in job interviews it gives more context to my degree since comm can be so broad. so i would go for it!
I went into college thinking I’d study international relations, but became hooked on communications after taking a course about media and society.
What a happy accident 😃
the exact same thing happened to me!
Hey there! I'm in Texas getting my degree in Organizational communication
Which subjects
Which subjects do l need to for qualifying mmc
I love your video. Would you start your business instead of working for other companies?
Great video! I wonder if there is a difference between disciplines such as communication or social psychology or sociology.
Hey I really need some help I’m thinking about studying communication and media and I am really interested in it yet I’m not really sure about it because I’m more of a creative and becoming a creative director or art director of some sort would be my ideal career, I‘m just not sure if studying this will send me in a rather highly marketing and business based route and how I can manipulate my experience to make it into the more artistic side of the industries ( like film, art or any content production ) or if studying communication and media may not be a good idea in this case
I would love any help or responses, I‘m highkey desperate for advice !
Thank you already :)
hey communications is a perfect degree for a career path towards being a creative director. working at an agency requires someone that can make connections between things that people dont normal see a connection between. comms will teach you that without all the sales price distribution stuff u get in marketing
🤗
My minor is currently journalism but I may change it. I wanna work in book publishing. It’s hard to find mentors
My school only has communication in media arts.
When you are asked why did you choose communication studies, what would you say
it honestly got to the point where i just said media studies
that helped me
Can u do a video on networking in this field. Very difficult.
THANKS 🙏🏼!!
The part they dont teach you:
Blue check mark = Gold
Is there a difference with communicational studies and linguistics and communication studies.
Hi Clara, great question! I would say that communicational studies will probably try to branch out into larger topics like cultural studies, cultural policy and media studies. I think Linguistics and communication studies would be very laser focused on semiotics, which I also made a video about. Hope that helps!
@@itscheyennecassidy thank
Pls can u post the link to the video
