Thank you so much for featuring this cemetery which is so significant to my family because my father's name is on one of the walls. He was a Sgt. in the Philippine Scouts, the US colonial army in the Philippines. I was born just when WWII started so I unfortunately don't remember him but only know him through family stories. Though I now live in the DC area not far from Arlington Cemetery, this cemetery in Metro Manila is so much more beautiful, serene and peaceful and so perfect as a sanctuary to honor our heroes. So thank you so much...Be well, Mr. Butters, and all the best to you in all your endeavors in the Philippines...
I will forever be thankful to all the Americans for fighting with our fellow Filipinos against the japanese imperial armies. They sacrificed their lives for our future in the philippines.
Thank you for this video. My grandfather was in the US Army in the 24th infantry division in the Philippines during ww2. He never talked about it, and my dad and I only learned about it from reading books. The true heroes never came home. I hope to come here some day to pay my respects to these men. I don’t think I would exist without them.
My God I've seen Arlington in DC an I've seen Normandy an now the Philippines. So I looked up just where all the different places that Americans are buried. It is overwhelming the price that America has paid not just for America but for the world. Thomas Jefferson one of the author of our constitution said from time to time the blood of patriots must be spilled to remain free. I pray for the men an women who has layed their lives on that alter of freedom for everyone else to remain free. My bereavement goes out to all the families who has lost loved ones in any battle or war. As a veteran this touched my heart deeply.
The American Cemetery in Manila truly draws a sense of awe from any visitor not only for its size but also for the feeling of peace one gets just by walking it. People tend to overlook it because of the hustle and bustle of Metro Manila, but I am glad you experienced it.
Our Arlington cemetery here in the Philippines for the soldiers who died during the war is the biggest outside of the US. Our tribute to those American soldiers who died to make our country and the whole world peaceful to this day. Maraming Salamat po. ( Thank you. ).❤
There is a strong sense of peace and serenity in that place Marshall. Very nice to know how we acknowledge and give importance to our Filipino and American soldiers 💗 Thank you for vlogging this 💗💗👍
Very nice Mr. Butters. We owe a lot to America and we should never forget. I speak as an Australian. Timely reminder that we will need a strong America again, given the current tensions in the South China Sea.
This retired U.S. Navy vet agrees with you. I served in Vietnam and was always happy to see Australians serving there as well. We need to maintain and strengthen ties in all ways to preserve our freedoms. 👍
Very well said sir (8:30) my father is buried at Libingan ng mga Bayani.not so far from where you are, he was a veteran of Korea and Vietnam wars. Thanks for sharing this video
For those who have never visited this place or know about the history of the Philippines specifically during WW2, you may have provided enough brief to pique one's interest. I visited that cemetery and I too felt everything you have felt and expressed and no doubt every visitors would have felt that too. It was peaceful, serene and at the same time, reflective. Manila, with its in your face poverty and extravagance, you scratch a little, and you find the enormity of its place in history. I am a Filipino, married to a Japanese and living in Australia. My father and his brothers and friends have marched in the Bataan Death March (the Kokoda Track of the Philippines). He survived the march but suffered what nowadays called PTSD. I think it is Filipinos' psyche not to commemorate its part in the War but I am glad the Manila American Cemetery & Memorial is there to remind us their extreme sacrifice...
I’m hoping for the American VA hospital to reopen to its original location for all the US Veterans who decided to live or frequently visit the Philippines and not inside the American embassy which is only a clinic. Hoping the US Veterans will lobby for this just like how they lobbied for the US Medicare coverage in the Philippines.
Thank you for another great video, mate. If you enjoy Philippine WWII history you would absolutely love a tour of Corregidor Island too. It would make for a great video, or several videos. Just an idea!
Thank you for sharing the video on your visit to the American Military Cemetery in Manila. It is the largest overseas American Cemetery in terms of interred soldiers there, second only to Arlington in Virginia. I always stop by to visit and pay my respects everytime I go back to Manila. Peaceful and serene.
thanks for the post and the visit to the American Cemetery. I was a teenager when i visited the cemetery in a highschool trip more than 40 years ago.... since then i've never seen this place until today in your vlog...
It's amazing that this is such a huge site right in the middle of Manila, yet some of the other prominent vloggers who seem to cover every restaurant, shopping mall, and boutigue in that area of Manila have never even mentioned it exists, much less vlogged there. Interesting. But thank you for bringing it to our attention.
Goodness gracious another great place I've never been to in all my years thru adulthood there!! To think an uncle of mine has a cross for him there after his sacrifice in that "death March"!!
they do the Bataan Death March memorial in the US (Indiana I think ) where participants mostly the army do the walk /run in the same distance as the Bataan Death March to honour those fallen and not to forget the suffering of the thousands of Americans and Filipinos who were in that March. Thank you for this video sir. My father was a fighter pilot in WW2. He fought as a guerilla after the air force was decimated. He later had his “best revenge” as an artillery spotter flying an L4. He witnessed the destructive effect on the Japanese bunkers ringside from his coordination with ground artillery.
I hope to visit the next time we travel to the Philippines from the US. My parents and grandmother survived that war and growing up my grandmother told me stories of what they had to do to survive. We lost a branch of our family tree because of that war, but I will never forget the name of the soldier that my mother told me handed her a candy bar after the Liberation of Manila.
Hello, Mr. Butters. One of my favorite PH vloggers. Thank you so much for showing or posting this in your channel and thank you so much for heading my suggestion before to visit this place. I appreciate you Mashall. I really do. As usual, your narration is great, you have this knack of story-telling and painting a picture through a great narrative. Your commentary of not forgetting the lessons of the past was also spot on. Once again, thanks for delving into a piece of PH history / American-Japanese history. I hope you enjoyed visiting this place as much as we were watching this. Great video and keep up the great work Marshall! We love you!

The tall bldgs in the background used to be an american military base during ww2 The japanese conquered that base and dig a very long tunnel to reach the other side of the city. That tunnel was recently rediscovered when a construction firm was digging the foundation for a new skyscaper. The tunnel is being refurbished and turned into a tourist attraction.
Thank you so much for this video. My husband & I visited this cemetery in one trip there and I was totally moved to see the headstones & the 36k names on cenotaths. I thought the same. The what-ifs. I am forever grateful to these young men who fought to liberate the PH. I would probably not be here had my beautiful mom not survived. She was in her teens then & her family had to live in a remote area to avoid the Imperial Japanese Army. It was a terrifying period in the Philippine history. Btw, Corregidor is another interesting place to visit.
@@marshallbuttersvlogs6880 This is Maria's husband, John! Thanks so very, very much for your thoughtful, well-narrated video. On a visit to the P.I. 10 years ago in 1011, I mentioned I wanted to see the American Cemetery and Corregidor. We saw both. Maria was unaware of this place -- and most Americans are as well. Because this cemetery is so far away, on Veterans Day (Remembrance Day in the U.K.) and Memorial Day in May, if we see some sort of commemoration in the U.S. showing a burial site overseas, it is always the cemetery in Normandy, which is about half the size of the one in BGC. I'm sure that most of the Americans buried in BGC have never been visited by loved ones or family members -- simply because of the distance and because the European Theater got the bigger play at the time and over the decades since. Thank you again for showing that so many young Americans -- and Filipinos -- gave their lives to fight off the evil of the Japanese Empire. I've been to Japan seven times and love the country and culture, but we should not forget what happened before (and that no country has a blameless past). If we can remember, we can hope that we can make things better in the present and future. 👍 Oh... and has anyone ever mentioned that you look very much like an Aussie version of Christoph Waltz?
I say the most beautiful American cemetery in the world. Although we never find the grave or body of my grandfather who fought in Corregidor Island which is a few miles away from Manila, in my mind I was hoping he was buried in the cemetery. We were there last year before the pandemic and paid tribute.
I plan to visit there since my Uncle is buried there. He died at the age of 21 in 1945. On my bucket list.

Thanks for sharing your history.
Oh... and has anyone ever mentioned that you look very much like an Aussie version of Christoph Waltz?
The video and audio quality has improved significantly since your early clips Marshall. I enjoy the lessons! Cheers mate.
Thanks Dave.
Sna all nakahiga lng
I say the most beautiful American cemetery in the world.
Although we never find the grave or body of my grandfather who fought in Corregidor Island which is a few miles away from Manila, in my mind I was hoping he was buried in the cemetery. We were there last year before the pandemic and paid tribute.
That's nice. Is his name on the walls?
check corregidor, i think there is a cemetary there too.
A taxi took me to that cemetery. About 30 years ago the guard at the gate never let me in. Thanks for sharing

well said sir but sadly humans just dont learn :(
I go there when I want to meditate or contemplate. Did you see Jewish tombstones too? The Japanese are one of our closest allies (as well as Israel).
I did see the Jewish Star of David grave markers.

Those heros died because of the japanese, but now allies.
Are they open to public for meditation or for a walk? Or do you need to ask permission or booked a tour?
I'm forever grateful to these soldiers who paid the supreme sacrifice for the freedom that I enjoy today. 🙏
