Here is the thing -- The current metro that runs in Chennai from cmbt is ridiculously expensive. With starting fares of 40rs, it is simply not feasible to travel, and nowhere in line with the fare rates of other metros like Kolkata. My primary concern is if the cmrl takes over the mrts, and introduces trains what willl happen to the fares? Currently it stands at 5rs and quite affordable to the populace as a whole. Modernisation should not happen at the cost of affordability.
What Chennai needs is an expansion of the existing MRTS with extension to suburban network as well as a separate metro corridor. Although the MRTS deserves newer rakes and better stations (and Mumbai as well), its integration with the suburban network is what will make it unique for its usage, wherein passengers can switch from one line to another without changing stations. A metro's purpose in a city is for overall interconnectivity of the city, meaning different parts of the city are connected to each other, however, a metro can never have through service with suburban rail networks (At least not yet in India, mass standardisations are required, which are very time consuming and financially draining).
This will definitely make the tickets costly, but still it will save time. Most of the passengers are mostly software engineers or students' so I guess they can afford it easily with a pass (if provided). This will definitely make Chennai beautiful
I m from Chennai. This will not get over by 2021. Its technically impossible to change all these infrastructure over night. No work, nothing has started not even symptoms, don't know who committed that dead line. This has never been a discussion point even in the political circles as well. It's just like creating some super expectation in the minds of the common man. Also someone below pointed regarding the fares ! That's going to be ridiculous when once CMRL takes over the existing MRTS, if at all the work gets completed and will never serve the purpose of the common man. For those who think the fares will come down, best of luck, it will be as foolish to expect like how we presently expect the petrol / fuel prices to come down in the future !
Mahalingam A bro St Thomas mount metro has two station.........top floor for Chennai metro from central - St Thomas mount and second floor consist of mrts 's St Thomas mount station for Chennai beach -st Thomas mount.........so both mrts station and Chennai metro station of St Thomas mount are built in same building 🙂
@@jeffrinedward846 True bro ! Its all in the same building but what about the work..? It is a combined terminal for the benefit of passengers. Completing prior to 2021 means a lot of paper work to have been completed by now along with acquisition of lands etc and ready for execution- nothing like that has happened and not a stone laid down. It's not about the building. It's about the entire project as such.
Thats funny. They can do a separate metro line for same Mrts route. Mrts pillars are already in koovam, the strength of the pillars are weak especially in park town,.. Its not about efficiency. As per chart it should take only 40 mins from beach to Velachhery, but it takes more than 1 hour. I heard They are running at slow speed because of the pillars. I am not sure its suitable for high speed.
I just wish that all the sub-urban lines were having better passenger facilities. Not hoping for a metro like system, but all the sub-urban routes of Kolkata and many other metropolitan cities could be made better with the implementation of more modern technologies and better coaches. But it seems that GOI and especially Indian Railways are in no mood to do that and instead they are ready to spend money on Bullet Train project. I don't want to make any controversial statement to trigger a war of 'gaalis' and specially those who generally gets offended when someone criticises the plan of making bullet train, but the whole point is, do we really need a bullet train project? When there's so much to do in improving the infrastructure of the railways, I really don't find any reason to come up with the whole idea of a bullet train corridor. #peaceout

It would be better if you change your mentality otherwise please stop uttering shits over here. The world would be better place without you people, those who doesn't know how to respect others.
@Mill Maroon Then its the responsiblity of the Railways to make profit out of it. You just cannot run a service which is too bad when it comes to providing passenger comfort with basic needs. You are absolutely ready to spend not just thousands, but lacs of crores of Rupees in bullet-train project and you cannot provide the basic facilities in the sub-urban routes. Its totally unacceptable.
I am from Adyar Chennai. With the enormous traffic congestion on Chennai roads, it is good to hear all about the take over of the MRTS by CMRL. It would go quite a long way to reducing the congestion. But unless the last 500-metre section of the MRTS between Velachery and St. Thomas Mount is completed how is CMRL going to take over the MRTS? It is impossible for me to commute from Adyar to a point on Anna Salai because of the inordinate delay in completing that section. I get the impression that the TN govt. is just not interested in doing anything to reduce the transportation woes of Chennai folk.
There are some trains directly flow from arakkonam to Velachery. So they need to take two different fares. And I also think it's not possible because metro rail soil test already started in Taramani and OMR also.
Living in greater Chennai since last 2.5 years. The biggest regret will be that OMR and ECR have no MRTS or Metro. The nearest MRTS is Thiruvanmiyur and nearest Metro is Little Mount / Alandur. So only people living in the main city can take advantage of faster transport system and avoid traffic. Most outsiders and professionals live in OMR & ECR. Having a Metro/MRTS till Siruseri/Kelambakkam would have benefitted both commuters and government. You can see heavy traffic around Karapakkam - Shollingamnallur - Kumaran Nagar / Tambaram areas. So many people would have used the rail services. But unfortunately people have to waste 15 minutes in traffic alone, and rely on slow crowded MTC buses. If there was Metro, people could have reached office within 20 minutes instead of 1 hour.
Your video is good, but Tell us, when phase One of Chennai metro will be completed That is madras high court - central - ag dms to airport. I am waiting for your reply please..
MRTS is far better than Metro..any one can use with a 200 rs season ticket..from a vegetable vendor to IT professionals...it won't be possible for a fruit vendor to use metro with high ticket price and restrictions..the basic fare in Mrts cost about 5 rs..it won't be possible in Metro trains...
the cost will depreciate as membership increases. it'll take some time. After phase2 and integration of the existing mrts, CMRL practically inherits the ridership of MRTS as well. And when the entire length and breadth of the city is covered, many more, including those who have traditionally used private transport, for lack of availability of reliable public system, will switch over to the metro system. Thereby significantly increasing the ridership. After this, it's a simple math of demand and supply. Even with the existing system, Chennai by far is the best connected city I've been in.
Many of our families don't understand about costing of train tickets. MRTS tickets are charged on a subsidised rating. It means, we will not pay for actual rate on the time of travel. But the difference amount will be collected by the government on the name of indirect tax. But, in case of metro, we are paying semi subsidised rating. So the rate locks like high to us. But. Trust me. Wherever a government says the word subsidy, it meens - indirect price hike. OK Place don't foiuled by least cost or free bees ..
Hi v nice explaination.. Actually normal cost of CMRL is higher than other states.. First they have to reduce it.. Then MRTS rate is for LIG people so it should be raised reasonably otherwise it will be messed up like previous MRTS project. We dont have elected CM only nominated CM... Once these situation changes Chennai n Tamilnadu will stand First in everything...
Just saying... Whenever you say Platform Screen Doors, you are referring to doors that are installed somewhere like Tsing Yi (MTR Hong Kong), instead what Kolkata Metro actually has is called Platform Screen Gates (Ex. Sunny Bay (MTR Hong Kong)). Just wanted to let you know.
In this case, Chennai Really has Platforms Screen Doors, not gates. Kolkata currently has Platform Screen Gates on the elevated stations, but it will have Platform Screen Doors on it's underground ones.
These trains can be sent to Mumbai and, along with old Mumbai local trains, can be used for a local train museum; huge in size with visitors having facility to ride the trains with full speed.
I was, for a long time suggesting to keep intact both of services. Each must take care of themselves. If this combined system would made feasible, this can be extended even to mofussil towns.
if the corporate company needs projects they have to go some other rail less routes. please don't waste people's money for the companies growth. Also remind one thing MRTS is the most wanted and daily usage of many people of our greatest chennai, really the user of CMRL is less due to its cost. For ex. if you are travelling from beach to velachery now the cost is around ₹10-15 only for covering almost 20km but if you are converting this to METRO the cost will around ₹40-50. Then the people will start to use the MTC buses for the cost. If the GOVT. really wants the people safety on railway coaches, make the doors only automatic by controlling the loco pilot. this is the much enough effort. so the cost of ticket also not increased much. comparing with your idea my suggestion is very less investment as well as no time lapse.
MRTS is a loss making unit, please tell me, if you are owner, do you really able run the same even with loss? But. I don't want to say, we only need metro. Let all be there. Whatever fits the need, will be needed by the segments of people. MRTS uses the max than the metro. Do you know,? Many of areas in India don't have power access even today.
Manoj Kumar Railway is not a private company. It's a public service department. In school education will you get any revenue from pupil.? MRTS is a public transport is running for middle class and poor people. You should understand one thing first., if we high class people can afford something means that's not mean to afford by everybody. really the luxury u need means can travel in the AC MTC busses. unless travel in first class MRTS. but if MRTS is replaced by CMRL really it's not poor transport. or else we can attach some AC coaches like express train in MRTS or we can run a full AC MRTS like sathabthi.

Mrts is great , 5 rupees to travel from one end of the city to the other . What Chennai needs is not some extremely fancy metro that cost a lot , but safe and efficient transport which is cheap .
My question is why should MRTS be converted to Metro. As of today, Metro has links to Parrys, ie. HIGH COURT, continuing to Tiruvotriyur. MRTS is upto Beach Station only. Are those residing on the Villiwakkam - Arakonam side not part of Chennai, to benefit Metro travel, Or only those residing from Tiruvotriyur to Tambaram, and velachery side to benefit. Due to fight between NHA and state PWD, the separate elavated road linking Port and Sriperambuddur is still languishing in cold storage. So those living Ambattur and beyond have become unwanted to this Govt. Is it not shame to leave them in a lurch, in all ways, by this Govt?
I don't think it happens as train enroute from avadi to velachery take huge population as takeover lead to change the train and increase the cost of the ticket will route to dump in empty building as of now as the target was IT employees they won't let it happen by getting corporate strategy
Don't replace the train! Add additional trains or metros! The conventional trains are the best means of transport for lower middle class and poor people. From daily vegetable sellers to street hawkers, they all board the cheap trains to load and unload from one place to the other. We all cannot afford metros.
Meanwhile in kolkata......yellow no ac tin can metros catch fire.....and only 20km of total line.......dont worry rest of India...we wll catch up in next 20 years..
The problem is, right from the beginning, the MRTS was nobody's baby. Both the Central and state governments showed no interest in the project. That is why the system is still incomplete after more than 30 years. The Metro in Chennai is atrociously overpriced. It has the highest fare structure among Metros in the country. Quick implementation of the MRTS would have helped. As it is it runs full in peak hours.
Also need to provide good hygienic culture and apartments to the slum dwellers in Chennai . I smell shit when I get down at Chennai central 5 years back.

MRTS should not be converted to metro. Because it serves the poor people living in those areas. if you travel by MRTS train you will see more slums under the bridge of the MRTS track. If it gets converted to a metro ticket fares will raise high. Moreover these MRTS trains also serves several other parts of the city by travelling beyond chennai beach station. Several routes are given below Velacherry to tiruttani Velacherry to sulurpet Velacherry to pattabiram E depot Velacherry to gumidipoondi These trains serves people living from farthest part of the city to their work destination everyday. These above mentioned trains shares racks with sub urban tracks of indian railways. so it is impossible to run metro in surface rails of indian railways There are also plans to bring an AC EMU running from velacherry to sullurpet as demand in this route is high Residents are also opposing for the conversion of MRTS to metro due to fare details.
Seems like another thoughtless move by CMRL. They haven't thought about the integration that MRTS has with the suburban rail network which runs into hundreds of kilometers. Thanks to this stupid takeover, it'll be the passengers who'll suffer the most. CMRL, without any doubt is has proved to be an inefficient institution, now they are going to take the MRTS down with them. In the end the passengers will have to pay the ultimate price for it.
Yes. Same problem is with New Delhi Metro Station. Observing this, Kolkata metro has decided to make the metro stations within the Station Premises at Howrah and Sealdah, providing better connectivity from Metro Station to Railway stations. Chennai can make a walkway, or a subway connecting the train station.
In my opinion, for a city like Chennai, with its overall dry climate, and without the kind of intense weather seen in Delhi, Metro is simply not needed. It will be better to convert the Metro to MRTS and have a 3 month pass for Rs. 330, than convert the existing MRTS to metro and slap high rates. Current cost from Chepauk to Velachery is just Rs. 5 one way in MRTS. In metro this will be Rs. 50. For what? Even the existing big stations are a useless overhead. All that is needed is a counter and elevated platforms with a roof.

Jeffrin Edward ... It's not the answer to Mr. Mahalinga.
@@hannanpakthini7221 he said work has not started ......so I replied that work as stated in St Thomas mount station

To upgrade suburban railway we need investor. In case of bullet train we got investor

@Mill Maroon right railway should think about it
@Confused Commie You call yourself 'commie' and then you say that they are animals? Leave it! Its a waste of time to talk with you people. I'm just ashamed to have people like you in this country.
In phase 2 it’s coming
Your video is good, but
Tell us, when phase One of Chennai metro will be completed
That is madras high court - central - ag dms to airport.
OK
Place don't foiuled by least cost or free bees

thank you very much for conveying this message
Hi v nice explaination.. Actually normal cost of CMRL is higher than other states.. First they have to reduce it.. Then MRTS rate is for LIG people so it should be raised reasonably otherwise it will be messed up like previous MRTS project. We dont have elected CM only nominated CM... Once these situation changes Chennai n Tamilnadu will stand First in everything...
excellent. there is no further news for one year. can you please cover latest developments
Thanks a lot @ MetroRailBlog for making the video I suggested ... you guys rock
Very informative. Thanks @metro rail blog
I am curious to know if the fare structure would as affordable as it is now when CMRL takes up.
Hey dude what about the train ticket rate. Will they charge the same as is now as mrts. Coz mrts charges are low just like the suburban.
GOOD JOB. NICE AND INFORMATIVE INFORMATION.
Why did Kolkata get a metro so early ??
They want to shift factories out of wb
I'm from Chennai. It's a very good plan to upgrade the MRTS rail to Metro. But it's impossible to complete the upgradation work by 2021.
Useful Information !!
Mumbai's Trans-Harbour line might get transformed into MRTS to Metro line which majorly connects NaviMumbai to Thane city
I think Chennai metro train sets are from Alstom company???
Yes
Yeah even Kerala Metro train sets too
Full India metro have Alstom
Please make a video on Kolkata's Suburban railway latest changes
I was a regular traveller from Velacherry to Chepauk ..
if the corporate company needs projects they have to go some other rail less routes. please don't waste people's money for the companies growth.

If govt approved tambaram to velachery route u may expect metro train in pallikaranai

If your state needs more metro, then your state also will be like us, for starving for blues and greens.

This mrts line can transport the passengers 5 times more than a metro line tickets are cheper than a metro line

Ok thank you metro

The purpose afterall is freedom from hardship during travel time from oneplace to another in metrocities where 1crore humans are striving to live happily
Wow wow wow
Bad move MRTS TRAIN used mostly , while metro train is empty always for high cost.
What are f we get local train coaches as stylish as metro coaches ??
Kolkata also need to change kolkata circular line to metro line
Mrts is great , 5 rupees to travel from one end of the city to the other . What Chennai needs is not some extremely fancy metro that cost a lot , but safe and efficient transport which is cheap .
I propose upgrading MRTS with AC EMU. Make cost with 15 rupees and it will be huge success
Great news...
Charges?
Kolkata hv 1200km suburban railway. Now need to upgrade it..
I don't get it. Why fix something that isn't broken? You'll end up hiking the fare substantially and in return give people just air conditioning.
I bet you never rode on the Mrts

I don't think it happens as train enroute from avadi to velachery take huge population as takeover lead to change the train and increase the cost of the ticket will route to dump in empty building as of now as the target was IT employees they won't let it happen by getting corporate strategy
We want to travel with safety and good condition .not needed ac and other stuff like metro
Chennai Awesome
The problem is, right from the beginning, the MRTS was nobody's baby. Both the Central and state governments showed no interest in the project. That is why the system is still incomplete after more than 30 years. The Metro in Chennai is atrociously overpriced. It has the highest fare structure among Metros in the country. Quick implementation of the MRTS would have helped. As it is it runs full in peak hours.
Also need to provide good hygienic culture and apartments to the slum dwellers in Chennai . I smell shit when I get down at Chennai central 5 years back.
is there any plan for lulcknow suburban,it is small but the least they can do is upgrade rolling stock, the EMU are too bad now to run on tracks
Lucknow suburban connects lucknow with neighbourig cities like barabanki kanpur etc

Just going to metro only for the sake of having a metro is not right we should 1st see if there is a need of a metro or not then opt for it.
Pls change the intro now. It became old

Indian traders were chased out overnight from Burma. They were resettled and given shops to do business. The market deals with smuggled goods and quite popular during pre-economic liberation days
Several routes are given below
Velacherry to tiruttani
Velacherry to sulurpet
Velacherry to pattabiram E depot
Velacherry to gumidipoondi
These trains serves people living from farthest part of the city to their work destination everyday.
These above mentioned trains shares racks with sub urban tracks of indian railways. so it is impossible to run metro in surface rails of indian railways
There are also plans to bring an AC EMU running from velacherry to sullurpet as demand in this route is high
Residents are also opposing for the conversion of MRTS to metro due to fare details.
MRTS have jus 5 & 10 Rs tickets... But metro loots 50 to 100 Rs... Almost 10 times higher than d existing rates... Thus is very bad...
Chennai🇮🇳
Super. Metro transportation was so good and a really appreciable upgrade made by Tamil Nadu government
But suburban train ticket fare is too low compare to metro and all of transport transportation expect metro
india is the world's fastest growing major economy with a reason
There is no connectivity to central metro from either suburban or central station platforms we have to walk crossing taxi through fare way
Not a good move.
Local trains carry lot of people then metro
Just fit an AC into local trains
Just need to.attach auto door enough
cmrl is costly
In my opinion, for a city like Chennai, with its overall dry climate, and without the kind of intense weather seen in Delhi, Metro is simply not needed. It will be better to convert the Metro to MRTS and have a 3 month pass for Rs. 330, than convert the existing MRTS to metro and slap high rates. Current cost from Chepauk to Velachery is just Rs. 5 one way in MRTS. In metro this will be Rs. 50. For what? Even the existing big stations are a useless overhead. All that is needed is a counter and elevated platforms with a roof.
you've no idea what you're talking. I'm a chennaite who travelled extensively. metro is a need and upgrading our transit system like MRTS will make many IT employees opt for public transport..
@@benny6878 Even now, employees working in Tidel and Ascendas prefer the MRTS. It was a boon when I was working in Tidel and to an extent when working in Kandhanchavadi branch of my company. But, it was also being used by a lot of other non-IT, folks, who will surely struggle if MRTS gets converted to Metro, with its 10 fold increase in prices.
