Another *good* GB conversion of a fighter is Steet Fighter Alpha on GBC. There isn't any cut content (other than 2-player for some reason), the animation is smooth, and the game is basically as fast as the arcade game. There were also some neat NeoGeo conversions
The NeoGeo Pocket Color fighting games were absolutely amazing. Capcom vs SNK for example had a unique story, as well as endings for every character, on top of having smooth animations and legit great gameplay, not just for handheld standards either they were just plain good games.

the studio that made that one, Crawfish Interactive made reallly cool games they also did Alpha 3 for GB Advance, funnily was founded by the guy who alone programed MK2 for gameboy, the only MK for gb considered decent.
I bought this the day it came out. My parents had taken away my consoles to try and improve my grades (didn't work), so handheld versions were my life raft😂

Seeing this, I'd suggest looking at the NES bootleg MKs, if only to talk about the UMK3 hack that has no right to work the way it does, with so many fighters and decent controls. Would be an interesting contrast with the official 8-bit efforts.
The NES bootlegs are interesting. MK1 and 2 feel a little like street fighter in physics but still enjoyable. Mk3, trilogy on nes are bad. But the UMK3 rom hack is amazing.
Something also of note as far as the visuals go: The character select screen, the difficulty select screen and the tower screen are all from the MK3 Gameboy version.

Best Mortal Kombat on Game Boy/GBC is Mortal Kombat II. It was responsive and it both looked and felt like Mortal Kombat (especially after the disaster that the original MK on GB was) shame they didn't just go back to that game to see what and how it worked and then built off of that.
Battle Arena Toshinden series did a pretty decent job translating a 3D fighting game to the Game Boy. Oh yeah, Digital Eclipse here isn't technically the same company that exists today, they merged with ImaginEngine in 2004 to form Backbone Entertainment, which went defunct in 2012 (their last game was coincidentally Midway Arcade Origins). Bunch of former Backbone employees found Other Ocean, that ended up buying and resurrecting the Digital Eclipse brand.

They played MK4 on the show and I really liked what I saw and then rented the game.

Besides using Shao Kahn's voice effects for round announcements with MK4, this game also lazily reuses the character select, Choose Your Destiny, and Kombat Kode entry screens used from the Game Boy port of MK3. Definitely a case where the developers didn't give a toss beyond making a quick cash grab.
This was actually my first experience ever with Mortal Kombat. My dad passed it down to me and I even played it on the OG GBA so it was in that classic green tint. Eventually I became accustomed to true MK as I moved onto the N64 titles and beyond
This looks like if mortal Kombat was on Atari with a Nintendo controller. At least the first mortal Kombat worked well on the system the problem is that the gameboy color didn’t have enough processing power to handle all of the functions of the game. I would hate to think what would happen if a mortal Kombat game came out on virtual boy cause with the red and black colors your eyes wouldn’t make it to the final fight and I’ve played with that failed system.
oh,if you are gonna tackle handheld spinoffs,I highly recommend checking out Tekken Advance if you het the chance. Surprisingly it still has a competitive scene as well lol

A very fun and almost hidden gem of a 3d mortal kombat game on the gameboy (advance), is Mortal Kombat Tournament Edition, also seen as Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance for the Gameboy Advance! It actually has the 3d style the og game has, and puts alot of effort into it. It’s not the absolute best by any means, but it’s impressive for a handheld.
What’s troubling is the development team went ahead and released this and previous MK games on gameboy. If it were me and I saw my vision and franchise looking like this I wouldn’t have released it. It does more damage than good. It’s horrible visuals, music and gameplay, just not worth it

I'm not sure when and how but I had this as a kid. I managed to beat the game with a few characters but could never pull off a fatality. But I did like how it was done automatically when you beat Shinnok.

I wouldn't judge the developers too harshly here. Portable conversions were usually made on a shoestring budget by inexperienced teams with unreasonably tight deadlines. Publishers were also massive cheapskates when it came to cartridges. This ment that developers often had to deal with very limited rom space, and rarely were able to get publishers to splurge on a save battery.
I don’t have this MK Game Boy game but I have MK1-3 so I have had this on my eBay watch list for a while. Someday I will pick it up for the right price.

It's a shame that MK only really had one good Game Boy port with MK2. MK3 and MK4 were gonna be tall orders given how much those games had to cram in but even for a handheld fighter it really pales compares to KI, Street Fighter Alpha, or just about any handheld ports of SNK games done by Takara on both Game Boy and Game Gear

You should consider covering MK3 on GB since it's as awful as this. It had enormously big roster and all characters had three specials with the same three inputs. I think it covered to-date MK pretty faithfully all things considered.

This is exceptionally atrocious considering Primal Rage accomplished the same feat of porting a high quality Arcade game to the Gameboy but with the game actually intact.
Street Fighter Alpha on GBC is a great example of a quality port. It's not the fault of the GBC, but rather the amount of effort put in by the devs of the game.
I had the Mortal Kombat Tiger LCD handheld game as a kid. I always thought there couldn't possibly be a worse MK game than that. . . But this I think takes the cake.
It’s so strange that this game is almost exclusively a sprite swap of MK3 for GameBoy, which was total trash, but they somehow managed to make it worse!
Its 1 of the worst MK 1 SNES version got censored and most of its fatalities changed which is why the Genesis version of MK1 was so much better but MK 2 SNES kept all the blood and gore intact with a M ESRB rating for MK2.

UMK3 was ported on GBC by Z80artist, and it is very impressive! The best MK on GB!

This game reminds me of a bootleg Famicom Mortal Combat I was playing somewhere in 90s. It had enormously big roster and all characters had three specials with the same three inputs.
I think it covered to-date MK pretty faithfully all things considered.

I dunnu, it's kind of a funny artstyle, I think this would actually work nicely as a filter for the modern games to play around with, like imagine you can unlock a filter that totally pixelises the entire game to look like this, would be a funny bonus and something to mess around with

This is exceptionally atrocious considering Primal Rage accomplished the same feat of porting a high quality Arcade game to the Gameboy but with the game actually intact.
Street Fighter Alpha on GBC is a great example of a quality port. It's not the fault of the GBC, but rather the amount of effort put in by the devs of the game.
I had the Mortal Kombat Tiger LCD handheld game as a kid. I always thought there couldn't possibly be a worse MK game than that. . . But this I think takes the cake.
The tiger handheld version was way worse. All the tiger handheld games were such a waste of money at the time.

It’s so strange that this game is almost exclusively a sprite swap of MK3 for GameBoy, which was total trash, but they somehow managed to make it worse!
Its 1 of the worst MK 1 SNES version got censored and most of its fatalities changed which is why the Genesis version of MK1 was so much better but MK 2 SNES kept all the blood and gore intact with a M ESRB rating for MK2.
