Can you imagine the History behind the beautiful and God-given Anthem our own beloved Men and Woman energetically and sacrificially put together for us..and some people want to take us back to dark days.. It's unfortunate but God will see us through in this Country Amen.

I am super proud of my husband Dr. Sota Omoigui and the other co-authors and musical composer of the Nigerian national anthem. Their legacies will remain for generations to come. It is my hope that one day, they will all be acknowledged and given the honor they truly deserve.
I applaud Dr. Deyemi Akanda and Lekan Otufodunrin for their excellent journalism and their effort in putting this great video together. Very well done!!!👏👏👏

@Helen Omoigui I am very excited to read from you. The experience of putting this small piece together has really reinvigorated me as an academic and Nigerian. It is my prayer that not too long from now, all 5 lyricists of our great anthem will be officially honoured for their contribution to our national identity. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch madam. God bless💚🤍💚

I don't know how I feel watching this after seeing us revert to the Old Anthem. I took this anthem for granted I won't lie about it. Seeing the importance of it and the deep history makes me feel even worse...clearly people in government aren't as patriotic or concerned

My prayers for the this historian is everlasting, when I was young my Uncle Pa Philips Aderibigbe told us his composition but it was until I grew up before I was able to realize his true worth and impact on the National Anthem. It is so sad that federal meritocracy in long lost in virtually every sector, we have not only failed to recognise these five heroes but we have also neglected the core inspiration provided by the lyrics. Of peace and justice, of unity and faith, of patriotism, truth and beyond, we have been gravely found wanting.
Thanks for this epic journalism, more strength, depth and height.

To be honest, I have been numbstruck since I heard the news. I am trying to be objective here but all I am pulling is blank. I am always quick to say I am a very poor political science student but the level of cluelessness and self aggrandisement in the political class is baffling. Thank you @themichanic for returning to see the short film.

    Greetings:
Excellent Excellent Production. My sister and I were just talking about the First Nigerian Anthem - "Nigeria we hail thee". I loved the words and often wondered why it was changed. But now I understand. I went to school in Lagos Holy Cross - my sister and brother to the University of Ibandon and Nusuka respectively. I met Zik and the Great Tafawa Balewa - the then Benson Minister of Information and many others - - these were MEN!! My family lived in Nigeria during the turbulent years after independence of Nigeria. Bobby Benson and his son another musician brilliant player of many instruments at their Cabin Bamboo Club on ikorodu road (now you can believe me) Fela playing at the "Talk of the Town" in Ikoye and others in the musical industry at the time. Again this was an eye opener for me after so many years. Thank you to all who made this production possible, With Kind Regards

We have various tongues ( dialects); we have tribes, cultures that make up Nigeria.
There are more serious things to consider concerning drastic changes, like leaders stealing our commonwealth for themselves and families and not only stealing but depositing them in foreign banks, etc.
This anthem is great and full of healthy meanings

History reminds us of our past, to enable us guide the present and predict the future. The National Anthem should be that rallying point for Nigeria. It should be our own rallying identity. Nigeria's national interest should have driven the national anthem. However, the national interest at that time was more of an Africa centred focus. Probalbly the main motive of foreigners writing the first anthem. Wonderful expose on the 5 eminent (indeed academics and professionals) persons who jointly wrote the lyrics and Ben Odiase who composed the music. They made us focus on an identity following the new anthem. Wherewither each state today playing its own anthem after the current national anthem? This is just a simple non-acceptance of the National Anthem

This, in all honesty, is an amazing piece!!!. The intentionality in this work of memory is riveting through the entire 35mins...(Listen with headphones and feel the soul of the organ sprinkled across the video). I wish this video makes it to our primary and secondary schools, that they might learn the untold story of our beloved anthem. I enjoyed every frame of this documentary, still wondering why Dr. was so hesitant to let this out sooner.
The last few lines struck home the message "They should be honoured" and "..............Let us never forget"
Again. Thank you Dr. Deyemi Akande 🙏
    And......We will never forget🙏
PS. The interlace of the Tafawa Balewa speech was epic. 😍

This is incorrect. The old national anthem is definitely not a product of the British you got that wrong. A call was made nation wide fora competition set up by the national planning committee for the selection of a national anthem to commemorate independence for the Federal Republic of Nigeria on October 1st 2960. The deadline given was March 31st 1959 and was not to be more than three verses. All Nigerians were called to participate. This was to get rid of the one that was sung at the time which was God save the Queen.

@bimbyjay You are correct about the call and the 1959 deadline. Winner/composer of the 1960 Nigerian national anthem, British expatriate Lillian Jean Williams - 'a product of the British'
