Landing at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport underneath a Boeing 747 - HiRes

- For the intro sequence of our first Omnimax/IMAX film "Picture Holland" we attached an IMAX camera to the belly of a KLM Boeing 747 to film the touch down from a unique angle. www.carillon-av.com.
Approach from the East over 'Amsterdamse Bos'.
Over the' Grote Speelweide' the wheel wells open and the gear comes down.
Later than usual, causing some alarms to go off, but we had a great flying crew that managed to wait till the last moment to create the right visual effect.
Four sets of four-wheel bogies and the nose-wheel assembly descend like bunches of grapes.
Pass over the 'Ringdijk' canal and the A9 highway towards the 09-27 runway, known as the 'Buitenveldertbaan'.
Then the smoke from the wheels hitting the runway. And after a quick stop we put in a new roll of film (1000 ft for 2 1/2 minutes) and took off again for another take. We did four of them this way.

It always amazes me how something so huge, heavy, and complicated can beautifully lift into the sky, travel gracefully through the heavens, and gently touch back down again with such poise. Sometimes engineering is art.

Nice. Late landing gear though
Yes Hunter, we asked them to. For our filming. Lots of lights and alerts going of course. We repeated it 4 times until we had the right timing. Had to reload the camera each time as it only took 3 minutes of film...

You're absolutely right Denis, The orignal was shot in 70mm, there was no HD video at the time. On RUclips was a fragment scanned to 1-inch video, duped to Betacam-SP, digitized to low-quality mpg some 10 years ago.
I went back to the Betacam and 'upscaled' it as you called it to a 720p HD format to get a slightly better picture. Hence the: Now in HiRes.

It's called a microphone on the camera thats probably using a deadcat mic to block out the wind noise

This movie has been shown in a cinema in Amsterdam as promo movie.
In these old times the cameras were big. And its unlikely to have a big camera on the belly for an entire commercial flight (with 747 probably 800nm+). With the drag the camera produces its not possible to calculate the needed fuel properly. So its probably for film making.

It is because it is their stowed position. With other words, when the gear is not positioned like that, the gear cannot be retracted. There is no difference in landing and after take-off position.
Cilinders on the gear are forcing them in that tilted position.

@@28xnlh yes and when the wheels touch down, those cylinders (or "actuators") automatically collapse, automatically deploying flight spoilers (aka speedbrakes), autobrakes on wheels, depressurising the cabin, and letting the gear fold down onto the runway

maybe they edited the sound effects in 2011 and replaced the old mono sound.
No, it is Original. ;)
the imax camera is not able to record sound (because printed imax film doesn't contain an optical audio track), so they would need to dub audio in. also, to john, sound effects did exist at the time.
The movie has been made way before 2002. BTW, I know this sound is original, dubbed or not. That's how a 747 classic sounds.
