I watched this at a friend's house. He and his brother thought it was hilarious; I never laughed once. I don't think he wanted to hang out with me after that.

I had Ed on VHS and must have watched it at least 50 times. My poor mother who never complained one time.

Right. I didn't even know this movie existed until today. And I was 18 in 96
I actually recently watched this movie, despite having watched both this video and the Cinema Snob's review, largely because I've recently started digging into Razzie nominees/winners. (Ed was nominated for four, including Worst Picture) Getting through this movie was a painful process.
Nothing about this movie struck me as funny, entertaining, original, or even halfway decent. I could predict almost everything because I've seen it in other better, if not good, sports movies. The chimp wasn't convincing, and some of his antics seriously made me uncomfortable. None of the actors seem to be trying. The writers seem to have no idea what amuses either children or their parents.
All in all, this movie doesn't work for anyone

The worst World Cup or the Worst Olympics
Well the worst olympics was 1904. Jon made a pretty good about that year's marathon.
Worst World Cup was easily South Korea
1990 was much worse, not a single interesting game of the lot, and certainly one of the dirtiest world cups & the dirtiest final in history (a record 16 red cards in total, 2 red cards in the final, plenty of dives, and players like Maradona, Voller, and Matthaus at their absolute most disappointing). South Korea's run in 2002 was definitely questionable, but at the very least it was an exciting World Cup that didn't average 2 goals a game, and we got plenty of non questionable upsets (successes of United States &Turkey, and the failures of France and Argentina), as well as the rise of players like R9, Ronaldinho, and Klose. The only good thing about 1990 was that it brought the backpass rule and 3 points for a win instead of 2.
I'll tell you the best World Cup. 2006 because headbutt.

Face it "Rudy" has the worst player among any sports player to be the main character in a movie, among those that are not intentional comedies. The thing is terrible, and the message of "don't give up on your idiotically impossible dreams" is terrible.

Thanks for covering this; I had to watch this movie at least 20 times last year with my little nephew.. so, so bad this one is. Such a waste of money and manpower this one was. Makes me wonder what in the heck was in the creator's heads to think of this and make it.
Only plus side of this movie was the soundtrack but that wasn't enough to make it watchable all those times.

Danny Ainge is a warlock and he tricked Mikhail Prokhorov using mind control. That is the only explanation for this baffling arrangement of nonsense. Nobody would or should ever pull the trigger on this -- and I'm a Celtics fan.
And all it cost us was 2014 playoff berth.
I for one loved ED. of course I was born in 1997 and the first time I seen it was probably 3 years old so their probably is a bit of nostalgia there. But I can even watch it today and laugh lol.

Big hit compared to spend/expectations. Plus, it's not just about the big number. Look at how few screens Swingers was on versus other movies on that list. It made way more per showing than many other movies that year.
Also, like Bound (referenced in another comment) it did better in the home rental market. These numbers are just box office. Swingers? That movie was money! So money, and it didn't even know it!
