The 2010 Seahawks were the first losers to win an NFL division

- The 2010 Seahawks made NFL history by winning their division with a losing record. Which is bad. One might argue it's the worst. However, their season hit a high note with Marshawn Lynch's Beast Quake. A monstrous run that led the Seahawks to a Wild Card win over the defending champion New Orleans Saints. But we must not forget the trash that came before it.

2020 NFC east: “Is this a joke”
give their seed to another nfc west team so we can have a whole division in the playoffs
@@faduska As a Dallas fan I agree😂
Technically Washington and New York could still get a winning record.
@@faduska that’s already possible thanks to the (dumb) playoff expansion this year. One of the few things you couldn’t do before this year was put all four teams in a division into the playoffs. You could have three (the AFC North did a few years ago), but you couldn’t have four.
@@kellz1703 yeah we’re on pace to go 7-9 too
In my madden franchise the bills won their division at 4-12
Whaaaa
That’s EA for ya
...
what
Eric Silva saints won at 4-12 in mine and then won a playoff game
Now that’s impressive, considering the Pats/Jets/Dolphins all needed to win just 4 or fewer games as well. And with how many times division teams have to face each other, that puts it pretty close.
2020 NFC East: “That’s cute”

@Tw1 It wasn't the Worst one, Losing 31-0 Vs the Bills in the 2003 season Opener was the worst, but luckily we got payback on them in week 17 and Beat them 31-0 in our House
Teams under .500 are 2-0 in home playoff games
And strangely enough both of those games involved both an NFC South and a NFC West team.
Seattle vs New Orleans and Carolina vs Arizona.
@@jacksonwright6029 The Arizona game was kind of fluky. They lost Carson Palmer, then lost their second-string QB, so they ended up starting a 3rd-string QB for their playoff game.
@@mrmacross I only pointed the matchup not the circumstances that led to the worst offensive/best defensive (however you see it) performance to ever happen in a Playoff game.
@@jacksonwright6029 Fair point. I just felt especially bad for AZ, so much that I was compelled to point out how bad their luck was.
@@mrmacross Larry Fitzgerald's luck is the worst I have ever seen. I would love to see him get a ring but as time passes, it is looking like he will never get one and it is sad for a guy like him to never get one like other greats in the past.
Worst season or not that is arguably the season that started the seahawks to where they are now. With a changing of the guard on all fronts essentially and mainly Lynch showing what he could do at the time.
MRMONKEY232 yeah, I think they went 7-9 the next year too (I seem to remember Larry Fitzgerald making some amazing plays against them in week 17 of the next season) but then in 2012, things started happening
@@eddixon2015 2nd half of "12" is when Seattle started streaking the NFL. Matt Hasselbeck played lights out vs Saints. I know he had 4 td passes. I can name 3/4. Brandon Stokley,John Carlson and Mike Wallace. When Seattle acquired Lynch from Buffalo,I knew something was brewing for Seattle. This was Hasselbeck's last game at Qwest and lost vs Chicago in the divisional rd. This game wasn't all about Lynch. Sadly, because of Lynch's run. Matt's game was and STILL is overlooked and underappreciated.
2010 Seattle got some of their core guys, but they were all new. 2011, they started building their defense and run game. Were actually pretty good except at the QB with Tavaris Jackson. 2012 is when they drafted Bobby Wagner and Russell Wilson. From there, they took off and haven’t looked back.

7-9 so fine. God I love that season. The start of something new in Seattle.
The Worst MLB Division Race: In 1994 Texas led the brand new AL West with a *52-62* record, and Oakland, Seattle & California were all within 5 1/2 games. The _only_ positive that came from The Strike was that it killed this race before any of them could make the postseason.

The NFL needs to do something like the NBA where the 6 best record teams in each conference make it to the playoffs.
The NFL already does something similar to the NBA in that division winners automatically qualify. At least the NBA understands that if you have a terrible record, you shouldn't start the series with home court advantage. That said, it took a long time for the NBA to have a more sensible playoff format, though I'd argue that letting 8 teams per conference qualify for the playoffs is much to generous to bad teams.
mrmacross the trouble with divisions is that you can have a situation like this (which also happened with the Panthers a few years later) where a losing record team gets in and a winning record team doesn’t. Or if you have something like the 2018-2019 season. The Chiefs and the Chargers had the two best records in the AFC, but the chargers couldn’t get a first round bye because they didn’t win the division. So the patriots, who lost one more game, got the bye.
@@TheTexas1994 Divisions are bad in all leagues, but in the NFL they kind of serve a purpose. When you have 32 teams, and only 16 games on the schedule, you have to find ways to award playoff spots. NFL divisions shouldn't be only four teams. Because they are, there are often 8-8 (or worse) teams winning the division, but without divisions it's hard to decide which teams should advance.
Whereas in the NBA, I am fairly confident a 55-27 team in the West is better than a 48-34 team also in the West, it's not so easy to say that a 12-4 AFC team is better than a 10-6 AFC team. Two teams not in the same division but in the same conference might have such few common opponents.
Here in New Orleans as a member of the Who Dat Nation I can remember watching that game and the frustration I had watching it, but I will say that run by Lynch was beautiful to see.
Giving automatic playoff berths to division winners made a little more sense when divisions were five teams deep. At least half your schedule consisted of division opponents (more when the AFC Central had 6 teams after the New Cleveland Browns arrived on the scene), and finishing ahead of four teams is significantly harder than finishing ahead of three. It's just not a good look when 8-8 (or worse) teams get to HOST playoff games. I kind of want the NFL to expand to 36 teams so they can go back to six divisions, with each division having six teams. If you win that division, then it's really hard not to justify your automatic home playoff game.
But in Seattle's defense, they were clearly a team on the rise. Even though their regular season was pretty horrible for playoff team standards, they were on the path to greatness.
mrmacross division games are more important, there being less of them even increases their importance. A 7-8 Jags vs 8-7 Titans game doesn’t have much appeal, but if it’s for a home playoff game it suddenly has a lot of additional meaning
Contrary to popular belief, the 2020 Washington Football Team was still better than the 2010 Seahawks. The 2010 Seahawks were around 29th in offense and 25th in defense. The 2020 Washington Football Team was around 25th in offense and 5th in defense. That's all I should have to say.
2020 Washington would smack this Seattle team around like a ragdoll…don’t forget they played in a terrible division too
So basically the winner of the NFC East is winning their first playoff game.

There was debate among Seahawks fans going into Week 17 about whether they should win the last game against the Rams, make the playoffs, and most likely get murdered on live television by the Saints; or tank the game, miss the playoffs, and get a top-12 draft pick instead.
Needless to say, those who argued the latter were wrong.
Especially since they all wanted to draft Jake Locker. Yeah that would have went well...............
Cant wait for the 2020 NFC East video. Gonna be one hell of a video about a 6 win playoff team
2010 was a fun, special season, especially for us 12's that have been fans since birth (born into the 12th Man fold, in 1981). It was a signal of a brighter future for the team, coming about from a great working relationship between PC and JS.
Coming off of the terrible 2009 season, brought to you by Tim Ruskell's last terrible personnel/free agency addition, hiring Jim Mora to be the Head Coach. It wasn't all bad, regarding the free agency additions, and draft picks, made by Ruskell, but there was far more bad, than good, and it seemed to immediately become a problem, following the 'Hawks loss to the "STEAL"ers/referee team they faced in Super Bowl XL... *cough* signing Alexander to a ridiculous extension, whilst letting Hutch' walk, in FA, over a small amount of money! *cough*
Anyways, I think that it is correct to allow all division winners, to automatically be playoff teams by virtue of said Division Title. I don't know if it is right to let a Div winning team host a playoff game, during the Wildcard Round, if their opponent happens to have a better overall record than they do (or maybe even make it that the better overall conference record, between the wildcard round opponents, be what determines home field).
