Fantastic review., insanely thorough. That hard crashing with switch emulation is crazy. I've had some occasional soft crashes during skyrim but fully shutting down for an hour is wild...
Thanks so much for the comment. Great to get feedback. It was certainly scary the first time. To be fair to Retroid they were quite clear this isn’t meant for Switch emulation and the software isn’t stable enough but I do think the device is potentially capable in future
So it can work decently well as an Android device? I've never really considered one of these devices before, but I use an ancient tablet for morning reading with coffee because it's an 8 inch tablet and I like the size, but I have been thinking about finally replacing it soon. This is at a similar price point to a decent tablet and with a similar screen size to what I currently use. If it could fulfill that purpose sufficiently, it might be an easy buy and would be a ton of fun to pack on road trips. Thanks for the video!
Oh definitely, it can run the hardest to run android games on high-mid performance, with 0 issues, battery is also great with high usage (heavy titles and emulators) its about 3 hours, ooh and the screen is oled so..awesome
Sorry, but your voice somehow reminds me of the old Mortal Kombat days. One of the characters had a very similar voice. You have a real talent for voice acting!😅
Great review! I'm currently deciding between getting this or the Odin 2 Mini. Leaning towards the O2M right now because of power and ergonomics but that screen on the RP5 looks amazing.
This is a tough one. The Mini is more powerful. But really that only gives you one more console from an emulation perpective. Of course who knows about the future. The ODIN PORTAL is coming. I do wonder if there will be a mini version of that later this year. Personally now I’m using the RP5 vs the original ODIN day to day. I never picked up the mini
@@thegamelounge659 True but being able to run Switch games without much issue would be nice. Also being able to run games at higher resolutions on the O2M compared to the RP5. I watched a video where someone showed PS2 performance starts to struggle at 3x on the RP5 where as you can run most games at 6x easy on the O2M.
@@thegamelounge659If they do a mini version of the Portal I hope it has an OLED screen. I think if I could take the screen from the RP5 and combine it with the hardware and form factor of the O2M it would be my ultimate handheld.
@@Setzer777the problem I had with the mini and why I went for the RP5 (aside from the money) is the screen size. Just to clarify 5.5 inch screen on the RP5 is not big at all. It is comparable to an iphone 12 screen (the normal one) in terms of size. Now looking at the 5 inch screen on the mini and having the RP5 in person, I can say that a smaller screen would be too small for me. On such a screen, the upscaling difference will be difficult to see and likely not worth it. And in switch games, it will probably be difficult to read the text on some games.
@Syuzaki1301 But no doubt performance on Switch games will be better on O2M and you probably have some Switch games that are playable on the O2M but not the RP5. Same goes for PS Vita games.
Finally an honest review, unfortunately Retroid Pocket 4 Pro handles stability in Nintendo Switch emulation much better than Retroid Pocket 5. So what if RP5 achieves better results in terms of FPS if on average every 5 minutes the console resets and the application closes? . For the sake of presenting 10-second game shows, it may be good, but I can't imagine playing a jRPG on Switch RP5 emulation that requires dozens of hours to complete.
Yes, to be fair the person I spoke to at Retroid was very open with me saying this isn’t designed for Switch. Who knows in the future if the emulators will improve. Thanks for the comment!
@@easylife5405just search on google for the name of the game , its console and and the word ROM... you'll figure it out. If not I wouldnt really recomend the console unless you learn about emulators, roms, and how to set them up. I suggest you google it up and start reading forums.
If you're new to emulation, you need to understand that there's no real easy way to acquire games. You need to use Google fu to find reputable emulation/rom hosting sites that will allow you to download roms, and even then many of them get hit with DMCA takedowns constantly. There is no single place to download commercial games for free. Most of us who do this as a hobby have rom libraries we've built up over the course of years and share with each other. A flaw on my pocket 5 are the thumbsticks. Both cap shafts cracked after 2 weeks of use. This was my go to for psp its perfect, beautiful screen but the thumb sticks are cheap. Im extremely upset the both pop off any time I slightly shake the device. Thought they were just a loose fit but nope both have a hairline crack down the shaft.
Everyone talks about drivers, but no one will provide a specific version of both the emulator and the driver - on which set it works stably. I did many tests, unfortunately with no success, both with Mesa Turnip driver v24.3.0 - Revision 9v2 and older versions. On Yuzu, Sudachi and other emulators. The result is the same.
How can you say the speakers on this are not bad? THey're the most horrible-sounding speakers I've ever heard on any device in the last decade, let alone an expensive device like this. That said, with an EQ change they CAN sound okay, so I think Retroid just really needs to push a firmware update fix for it. MANY people are noticing it, it's a real issue.
You need the TRIMUI SMART PRO. Truly horrible speakers. Interesting you say that, I use Bluetooth headphones 95% of the time and even when I don’t the speakers are low so perhaps I haven’t noticed, but for me they sounded ok. Nothing groundbreaking, but solid enough. Maybe I needed to do more testing.
Watched the whole video and could not stop staring at the weird smudge/stain you have in the middle of your buttons. How can you stand it like that!! Anyway, great video otherwise lol
This looks gorgeous, exactly the kind of system that appeals to me
Yeah have to admit very impressed so far.
I ordered one today based of how it looks xD

have you tried sudachi?
I have on the ODIN 2, there were a few games I had that didn’t boot that did on sudachi
Great review and you explained the hard crashes when it comes with switch emulation kudos to your channel
Thanks for the comment 👍🏻
I'm just here to say that this fits just fine in your pocket around the house!
Unless you're wearing a tattoo, that is...

Totally agree here, these are essentially mid to high end phones that are optimised for the best performance with great controls built in.

The thing is even the Switch can't run most of its games at full speed, so can't expect an emulation device to do that. Whilst costing less.
I never had thought actually considered that it costs less than a switch. I know the switch has JoyCons but it gets you thinking
Great review. Thanks.
Thanks, appreciate the comment
Great review! Could you maybe share those retroarch overlays?
Thanks, if you look up ‘Batocera Bezels’ then I use theirs. Use their GitHub repo to browse through

Hey Will, does the RP5 fit ok in the Odin2 case?
It fits, but it isn’t great. Moves around a lot. It certainly an option 👍🏻

Just Google roms

Nice one! Hope the review helped with the purchase decision

I would like to see what this looks like next to like an iPhone pro Max or a 20 something Ultra
So the best I can give you is it’s a little bigger than an iPhone 15.m

That’s interesting. Hadn’t heard of this before. Given its age have you contacted Retroid. I’m sure they would help.
@thegamelounge659 I have. No response yet.
Interesting, let me know your findings!
The hard crash for switch emulation is due to the new turnip drivers. Use the stock driver or an older turnip driver.
Interesting, will do more testing.

I think the stick drive seems to be the most stable for me personally
