  • This is from a tour we all did in Europe together with Rickie, who is one of the best singer songwriters out there, in my humble opinion. The band was Michael Ruff (key/voc), Reggie McBride (bass), Arno Lucas (perc/voc). Artie Rodriguez (dr), Richard Elliot (sax) and myself (gtr), Jeff Pevar.
Thanks for all the great music, Rickie. We love you!
    JP

JP I totally agree with you! I saw her at the Paramount in Seattle in like 1979. And her family was there! She is from Olympia, a town about 60 miles or so from Seattle (I am from Tacoma... T-town). Which meant it was one kickass show!! Oh! I can't convey how turned on, electric, passionate, oozing dynamic hipness, beautiful, center of the whole effin universe! she was that night! It was so sweet, she was like laughing and embarrassed almost, that her mama was seeing her be this famous, sultry singer star! It was too too cool!! I have seen in the 1970's the Grateful Dead, Santana, Alice Cooper, Pink Floyd, Jefferson Starship, among many, many others. And I can say that Rickie Lee's was one of the BEST shows I saw back then!

darkmaitri I'm a big Rickie Lee Jones lover, I've been playing her since I was 15 years old...
Rickie, indeed... I'm an LA teen, who grew up really too fast... Rickie unknowingly wrote about people I mixed with in the motel rooms and in the streets of LA. Much like her songs, but, that came from her own experiences, and oddly "WEST SIDE STORY"... She captivated me, and made me cry with her debut album and from then on... Rickie's an artist's artist!! She's genius, her musicality comes from a very deep place. I'm grateful to have caught the ride from 1979. When I first heard the single on the radio of "Chuck E's In Love", I said "Oh God, she was what was missing!" I'm 54 years old now. I really think the recording industry ripped her off.. I'm from the big City of Angels... Where every music buff owned at least the Debut and "Pirates", and then the diehards like me bought them all... Oh well.... Just felt like sharing. Her voice pierces with a beautiful cry in it. Then creeps in a window like an innapropriate voyeur, listening to a mother settling a child down with a lullaluby. Or a woman singing softly to her lover... The writing is so unique. We used to drive to Palm Springs CA and listen to "Flying Cowboys"... It was a perfect soundtrack. I saw her at the Wiltern Theater at the time of the "Flying Cowboys" album. A couple was entertaining a Chinese couple, on their two week business trip. They had only heard "Chuck E's In Love". And loved it from 10 years before, but nothing else from Rickie. Both, the Chinese husband and wife were in tears. They were blown away by Rickie's artistry. They were wiping the tears from their eyes, after her show completed, and they said, "How come her music isn't being played on American radio, it's so beautiful!!!" As if saying what is being played on American radio was sub-par. The 80's.... Me and my friends just looked at each other. Because we had once asked ourselves that question long ago...

the date is wrong on this. its 1982 or 1983. This is recorded before the Magazine so before 1984. .during the Pirates tour time.. and...
    no drugs!?
Rickie Lee Jones took drugs for three years, and thats it. And.. she never took drugs on stage. Performances were sacred to her even there. This tour she was seen drinking on stage.

Sometime early 80's Rickie came into a lower East side NY bar 1 or 2 in the morning that had a mic and a stage where I was. Everyone got real excited when her escort was talking to the owner and Rickie made her way to the mic. She couldn't make it through her second song before she was yanked. Wish that wasn't my memory of Rickie.

The same friend at Lowe's heard the same songs and wondered about the artist. The Real End came on one day and I stood on a chair in the office to stick my ear to the speaker to get some words to google. The words were "make him some catfish, fry it up in bed." Thus we discovered Rickie Lee Jones in 2003.

    Absolute treasure, indeed.
I was at this concert, having met Rickie's music some four years earlier. And boy... how my cassette got tortured in the player, think I listened to it until it gave up by having the tape looping around capstan and pulleys !!!
Then came the opportunity of a (finally !!!) live concert. Grabbed my sparse cash, did some hitch-hiking or train ride (can't remember) and made it to Paris... after all these years away from the capital. I got hypnotized from note n°1, couldn't let go til the concert's end. Only to come out of the place in tears.
You've been a lucky man (and that's no accident, you deserve it [I'm a stage performer too by now]) Mr. Pevar to go along with her.
If ever possible, tell her how much that little French guy loves her... and he couldn't make it to Enghien last July (out of surgery), so... he's hoping for another chance.
PS : I also attended her live performance at the Bobino theatre in Paris (2009, 2010 ?), great gig and outstanding music, awful sound from console/FOH... making for hilarious moments !

Excellent band. Really fine groove on this piece, & Rickie sounds like she is singing in a state of arousal. Like this a lot.

Much love and blessings to you all and especially JP who I have yet to meet but can't thank enough for his artistry. That he was "instrumental" in the success of CPR and that auspicious reunion still resonates as one extraordinary twist of fate.

All this is saying to me is that she likes the sound of her own voice. I feel Tom Waits pain sometimes .
