PJ Moore's keyboard talent and the beautiful sensitivity of the framework he provided for this performance, creates something close to musical and performance perfection. The emotion of this piece is unequalled.
The infinite impossibility of getting two instruments as rare and as mystical as Buchanan and Jones's voices together. If there is a God out there, thanks for the ears.
Good comment. For my money, all the 'mysticalness' and wonder comes from Rickie. Paul sounds soft enough but very plain and sad and resigned and streetbound. From her first pleasing little 'whines' or 'meeows' at 1.19... she transforms the song into something else... something with hope and harmonies. There's definite chemistry/flirtation between the two, in at least one interview from that time. And the 'alchemy' that happened on the whole Flying Cowboys album, when she worked with logic-man-brain-master-cynic Walter Becker, is equally remarkable - some of her solo demos from those songs are wilder-than-wild - barely recognisable. Ain't nuthin' quite so sad as when you catch a hummingbird and tether it to a heavy block. Or maybe a 'heavy bloke'... as someone might've once said.
I have known for many years. I had both artists in my collection since 1989. Never understood people not knowing about The Blue Nile, but as you say, that's ok. I just discovered this collaboration now and it's perfect. I never would have thought how perfect and natural a pairing they are. Now it seems obvious and I have chills. Both artists had a big impact on how I thought music could sound and what it could do emotionally. Chills...
It's 2020, a Friday night. I'm halfway through a red bottle and found this by accident having looked for Blue Nile out of nostalgia for a feeling remembered. I only have one Rickie album but will now buy all the rest. An inspired combination.
what an amazing combination - was directed to this as had a notion to listen to both - but had no idea they had done a duet - so moving and their voices work so well together
Fell in love with The Blue Nile in 1989 when I walked into a music store on the Fulham Road in London and heard their CD playing. RL Jones was earlier. Here, a match made in heaven.
Just terrific. I actually remember this, so good it was stuck in my brain, such a dream combination. But for years i looked for it, wondering if I imagined it, and then thinking it was lost forever. So to see it again, and find it is every bit as good as I remember is a real joy. Rickie and Paul B, what a soulful combo.
Easter Parade single was hard to find back in the day so I have to wait for it get played on KCRW. Didn’t know about Flying Cowboy w Blue Nile, wow firs time seeing and hearing it in 2022
Thank God 🙏 for Rickie Lee Jones she definitely sings from her soul❤❤❤ a heart from each one of my boys. And a heart from me and all the people that still listen to your beautiful music ❤
One of my first CD's was Rooftops, after Gary Davies played Tinseltown on his radio show. Hats is perfect and on one my many CD singles Hats is the studio Easter Parade Rickie made with TBN. Peace at Last was difficult but a good follow up. Finally got to see them play live between Peace and High. Scotland's gem of a band.
Halfway To Paradise was ahead of it's time as music t.v in Scotland...aptly named after it's location to the actual football Paradise. Thanks for this.
The first of these duets is on the "Headlights On The Parade" CD Single (1990). I never knew the source of the recording until now. Thanks for this, great to see this video all these years later, and the second / reciprocal song.
Such a wonderful duet. It's as if two souls connected at just the right time and we're left to enjoy that magical moment. Thank you @What's for afters for the gift.
sweeeeeeeet! what an auspicious collaboration from 2 beloved artists. this is really sweet, each of these songs are gems and made better by the guest. thank you so much for uploading this and making this sweet moment available to us.
thank you so much for uploading this. I dream of a day when we could get a full blue nile / RLJ collaboration LP, i think both of these songs are elevated by the work of the other. This version of Flying Cowboys is one of my favorite things ever, hands down.
I am SO HAPPY that you posted this. THey played Toad's Place in New Haven CT on her tour at this time, I heard it broadcast live on the radio and was so frustrated that I failed to attend the fully sold out gig. I have it on cassette but seeing it is SO NICE!!!!
Hey Jef, Are you able to get that cassette into your computer and up online somewhere. I'm sure a lot of commenters here and elsewhere would be overjoyed to hear it - I know I would...
Fernando Garcia Indeed Fernando, she captivated me and made me cry from her debut album, from then on... Rickie's an artist's artist! She's genius, her musicality comes from a very deep place...
As a musician( debatable).....You don't need a shit load of production to convey the most heartfelt music.. This has always been one of my go to tracks for the reason why the heart and soul is more important than any noodling. Mr B and Rickie.........Sublime. 8 thumbs down....I hope them thumbs are caught in a mincer....
I wonder if this happened to be a thing made by Linn who promoted The Blue Nile and also Rickie Lee Jones. I am curious because I became aware of both names through my local Linn dealer!!!

The Blue Nile are a gift......musical beauty and the combination of Paul Buchanan and Rickie Lee Jones is eternally evocative. Just brilliant.

Great Comment...thanks for the ears!!...lol.
Nick McGivney yes! And that piano ! Stillness.... wonderful.

@@jonathanschotten1410 That makes me laugh. Paul Buchanan in a plain voice 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Buchanan has never been main stream and I like that...he's loved by those who know...those who take the time to listen are greatly rewarded.

Red wine and good times no better then the blue nile
Girl at her Volcano is essential 👍
what an amazing combination - was directed to this as had a notion to listen to both - but had no idea they had done a duet - so moving and their voices work so well together
this is still objectively the best video on RUclips
Yes, it is. But the sadness is so avoidable. It's drugs. That's the tragedy. There is a cure. It's just brutal.
This might be the best random duet ever...
Fell in love with The Blue Nile in 1989 when I walked into a music store on the Fulham Road in London and heard their CD playing. RL Jones was earlier. Here, a match made in heaven.
Rickie's "Pirates" album was one of the most beautifully poetic masterpieces of her generation...
Been listening to it all weekend. Now this. Gorgeous
Absolutely!
breathtaking version of Easter Parade. wow. yeah, two of the most emotive voices out there. beyond beautiful.

Bloody hell. didn't know there was a video for the most perfect love song on earth, sung by the two artists most quaified to do so.
You just nailed It Alex . ✌️
perhaps the greatest performance of one of the greatest songs! simply faultless! more fragile than ice
Can’t stop watching, don’t want to stop.
Magical. ❤
Absolutely, devastatingly, stunning
Music does not get any more magical than this .god bless you both..love from Edinburgh.
Two of the best artists, with the most distinctive voices (pure emotion) together....almost too good to be true...thank you x infinity
Outstanding comment - I couldn't agree more
I swear, hearing these two together brought a tear to a dry eye.
Thank God 🙏 for Rickie Lee Jones she definitely sings from her soul❤❤❤ a heart from each one of my boys. And a heart from me and all the people that still listen to your beautiful music ❤
Keep coming back to this.
Oh my god... SO gorgeous... I LOVE this version! Rickie Lee really brings another sweet flavor...

Wow, I never knew these guys ever played together. Fantastic.
Paul Buchanan’s & Rickie Lee’s voices are so beautiful.
Music of the highest quality...feel the space between the instruments. Beautiful
Yes indeed, Blue Nile leave a masterful space in their soundscapes; Rickee, superb !
Easter Parade just drips dazzling gold...magical is an understatement. Beautiful soulful vocals - Thanks for sharing this audio gem.
You're most welcome! Thanks for the note of appreciation, and happy to hear that you enjoyed it so much. It *is* quite the collaboration!
Halfway To Paradise was ahead of it's time as music t.v in Scotland...aptly named after it's location to the actual football Paradise. Thanks for this.
My pleasure! Thanks for the added information on the origin of the program, and your note of appreciation :)
It was - I remember they put on 'Five Guys named Mo' - I think they were a Canadian band resettled in Glasgow.

Most happy to hear that you found a special surprise when you happened across this clip. Thanks for the note of appreciation, and "Cheers!"
Never heard of her, but Paul's voice just blows me away every time on this track. It's been one of my all time favourites for decades.
Mine too. She means well, but never did it for me.
At one time she was married to Tom Waits .
@@thomassummerhill6357 they were never married

My pleasure! Glad to hear that you enjoyed it so much, and took the time to say so :)
Goosebumps!
Takes a brave person to sing next this man...along with david sylvian there arent any better voices....nice upload.
Cowrao Lasczyk go listen to this man and Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins) singing with Peter Gabriel. She easily holds her own 😁
Sylvian's Nine Horses is superb.
And a brave man to sing with her.
Greg Lake from King Crimson and EL&P.
What a lucky find this is!
Ricki Lee Jones......brilliant!!!!!!
Fernando Garcia Indeed Fernando, she captivated me and made me cry from her debut album, from then on... Rickie's an artist's artist! She's genius, her musicality comes from a very deep place...

Masterpiece ❤
Astonishing
The line of traffic comes to a stand still
For the love King, out in the morning air
I find a place I started from
The wild is calling, this time I follow
Easter parade
In the bureau typewriter's quiet
Confetti falls from every window
Throwing hats up in the air
A city perfect in every detail
Easter parade
I know you, birthday cards and silent music
Paperbacks and Sunday clothes
In hallways and railway stations
Radio across the morning air
A crowd of people everywhere
And then the people, all running forward
Easter parade
Songwriters: Paul Gerard Buchanan / Robert Bell
Apparently, they would only record this song on a Sunday - genius.
What year, I know Flying Cowboys album released in 1989... I first heard Easter Parade at a friends house in Pittsburgh, and it had to be 1991 or 1992...
Fantastic
How good is that...
BRILLIANT !
Amazing!!

Brilliant - what show was this from?
this is great!

Fucking WOW!!!
There’s Ricki Lee with her mouth full of marbles……still love her, though.
Who's on the piano on Easter Parade?

Paul’s may be the last great voice in music history IMO
Coulda been
She doesnae know what to do with herself.
Didnt like her voice and her trying to enhance paul doesn't work for me.
Shes sadly not in the same class vocally...,good effort all the same.
But who is🙏❤️
You obviously haven’t listened to “Girl At Her Volcano” . They are both unique in their own ways.
Oh please....this is not about comparison... and yes she is absolutely in the same class, and I love them both.
You sadly don't have a clue. Just sayin
RLJ needed teeth work :)
