The wonderful thing about your setup is that it is obviously not for show. Thanks for being real. If I ever see you on the road, I'll probably recognise your bucket but will also tip my hat in respect. Good luck!
Awesome video. Just went on my first 2 day bike tour over the weekend in Pennsylvania. I really love how inventive you were in getting your bike totally set to fit your needs. Peanut butter holder? Genius. Biking is such an amazing way of life- it's nice to see others not breaking the bank of crazy expensive gear and making their own custom stuff (minus a quality bike/waterproof panniers of course) You just gave me tons of new ideas. Keep it up!
If you don't have waterproof panniers then do a backpacking trick to waterproof them. Take a trash compactor bag and line the pannier with it , then pack the pannier and when you have everything you want in it take the top of the trash compactor bag and twist it and fold that twisted part ( it's called the Elephants Snout ) of the bag along the side of the stuffed bag to hold it. Garbage bags work really good but trash compactor bags are thicker and a lot more durable.
I've been planning my first bicycle tour and came across your video. Absolutely love it. If I'm going to talk to someone about touring give me the guy with the PVC pipe strapped to the crossbar over the guy riding the Surly long haul trucker any day!
Bucket + bycicle!! One of the greatest combo inventions of mankind alongside silicon chips + electricity and knife (Homo Habilis) + meat. I am ditching my handle bar bag. Waterproofed, spacious + really really useful, awesome.
Love the outside the box approach. Adjust your seat probably please and add some lights!!! As for the barefoot pedaling, it's just a bad idea all around but I'm not your mom. Just know if your going to be dumb you better be tough. You might look into getting a "seat post" full size air pump and add a few bottle holders. Honestly your application is a bit rough around the edges but with a little experience and creativity you have the personality and drive to bring things to the market place people don't even know the need yet. Awesome job, great video, absolutely love your approach to solving problems. Oh, and did I mention put on some shoes?!? Extra socks just aren't that heavy. lol
Very cool bro!!! Definitely a unique and individualized set-up. I, too, usually outfit my bike to my own specific requirements. My bike is my horse. Gittee Up!!!!!!! Thanks for sharing this video.... God bless.
LOL love the peanut butter stash. I've done some cross country cycling too. Have you done a post tour review of your rig? My first reservation would be the handle bar mass due to the bucket. Extra weight on the fork is allways a PITA. Also FYI, there are great cycling socks available that wash out very easily. I'm on the the don't ride barefoot wagon myself. Hope you had a great trip!
Erik Hellqvist Thank you. I just attached it with two tough bungee chords. It will be different for each bike depending on handlebar setup, brake lever design, and bucket size and design. I would just say to get a few different bungee chords and see if you can find a way to make it snug.
Well done , not what most tourists would use . You can make your own panniers at less than 50% of the cost of Ortlieb using the same material. Use a free CAD program to make your design. CAD cardboard assisted design.
www.amfab.ca/ the material is www.amfab.ca/vitex-16oz/ I sewed mine with bar tacks at key points Bartacking is the same as a satin stitch or a very tight zig zag, stitching where you hold things stronger than an ordinary seam. It can be radio welded as well.
Well, that's not how I would do it but I love the ingenuity, you don't seem like the kind of guy who would care if you ended up up a creek without a paddle, you'd just find a way to make one I imagine lol.
I just realised that you don’t have to spend tons of money on expensive bags, just be like this guy, cheap but works well, as long as you enjoy your ride, that’s all it matter.
Hey Matt I really hope all is well I am very grateful to of met you at the permaculture convergence, I noticed we both had interests in bike travel as we sincerely listened and gave in to everything Safras had to say and her genius rocket stove design I do so wish she made youtube videos to document and share her tips, tricks, experiences, and more, but I was wondering if and what any changes have been made to your bike setup and are you still bike traveling (full time)?? and where to? thank you so much lovin the videos keep on keepin on Tyler Zender
Ableurself Tyler, hello! Me too. She was really inspiring. I would have liked to just follow her around for months and learn and experience from her. Honestly, if I were to head out again, and maybe I will one day I would probably get an entirely different setup. I would ditch the mountainbike and get a road bike and travel with much less stuff. One pair of tennis shoes rather than a pair of slides and a pair of workboots. I packed a whisperlight stove and fuel - cooked outside almost every night and never used it. I packed all my winter gear even though I wouldn't need it for months. I would rely more on what I could find along the way rather than having all clothes for all weather conditions on hand. I brought a solar panel to charge my phone - never used it - I would bring a small rechargeable speaker/battery instead. I would nix the video camera and tablet and just bring a smartphone. I would ditch the rain gear and just change into a bathing suit if it rained. I would def keep the peanut butter holder and bucket on the front. The Ortlieb panniers were great. I would get a "moonsaddle". I hosted a bike traveler and he said he's been through two and that it changed his whole trip. He came from NY to Key West. I really recommend the carbon fiber reinforced wheels and additional "thorn liners" that go in the tires. This is making me want to take another trip.... Thanks for reaching out :)
WanderingUpward I just recently attempted Cape Coral to Dania Beach I made it 60 miles and realized I do not have enough time in order to make it to Dania where I am taking a permaculture teacher training course with Deva It was sure a blast though I do plan on going to key west next and then touring up north. thanks for getting back with me! Take care.Sincerely Ty
You have a lot of wasted things. Instead of those water jugs, get water blatters that come in various sizes: 2 Liter, 3 and 4 Liters. They also have them that are made out of non tear material at R.E.I They hold all the water you need, and roll up to stow away when not in use. If you need to wash your clothes, get a netted laundry bag; you put your dirty clothes in it and run it over water or dunk them in water while they are in the mesh net bag. The reason for this is so that the bag can also be rolled up when not in use. Unlike your big bulky plastic container. There's more that can be mentioned but remember... Think, space and weight: every gram adds up quickly to pounds, and pounds add up quickly.
Matt dude I love your videos and I think im going to do that bucket on the front idea for my bike tour! Good idea and why don't you make videos anymore? I just checked your blog and I see you're still posting stuff so that's cool, you should make more videos man! Like how's it going!?
Thanks! Yeah, the bucket is where it's at. I've got some video ideas in the works, but I'm doing a lot of the same stuff, over and over, these days, nothing I see as too useful of information yet. Do I know you from somewhere? Good luck on your trip!
Matt Hunter there is a web site called 5 gallon ideas or something like that, link (fivegallonideas.com/) check them out, you would not believe what you can do with a bucket..... Good luck on you're journey's man (WanderingUpward) I do love what you are doing on a budget, keep it up.....
Matt Hunter Matt you are the man, hope things are going well. A few weeks ago I found a nice 3 gallon bucket identical to yours outside of a random dumpster the SAME day I planned on going to home depot and getting a not-so-good bucket.. such a crazy coincidence. I thought I gotta write Matt on youtube about this.
Love ur ingenuity and character. U A unique post. Thanks for sharing. Brill. One question - what about ur property when u have to leave bike eg to go into a shop or similar?
I just tried to run in run out. Those pannier bags can be a little difficult to figure out, so hopefully that would be a small deterrent. You could also tie rope around everything to make it cumbersome to access if you were worried about it. It is a risk though.
I kinda do a lot like you just less crazy (or you could say a bit more boring) I don't go barefoot but I wear flip-flops for the same reason. I wrap the duct tape directly around the frame so it doesn't move and it's less notable. and peanut butter has been in the bottle cage (only small glasses where I live)
I slide all over the place. I pretty much adjust my seat depending on which part of my ass is least sore that day. I think I've adjusted it every way but backwards, which may not be a bad idea now that I think of it...
Thank you. No, I didn't end up making it across the country. I ended up taking three months to make it to Alabama, just because I was finding so many neat places to stay and visit. Before I was ready to leave Alabama my dad was diagnosed with cancer. I couldn't focus on traveling, and it felt more important to go home. Life hasn't put me back on the bicycle adventure since then.
Well i have to say this set up is different. I have never seen anybody use a bucket as a front rack. Ways to do things without going too the bike shop for everything you want.
ApocaIypse666 It's alloy. I know, it looks like a steel framed kids bike with the flames and all. It was actually owned by a twelve year old before I bought it. I figured wth, it'll keep people who don't know much about bikes from wanting to steal it.
with all that weight i worry about cracks when it comes to alloy how long youve been riding/touring with that thing im really afraid using alloy coz mine breaks in the middle of the road at night that was a year ago tis why i stick to steel and yeah they are heavy but my mind is at peace but anyway that just my experience when it comes to alloy but i respect your choice it just that my bad experience to it anyway thanks
riding without shoes... *wince* I ride in my vibrams when I go rockpooling, but I dont think I'd go barefoot, you don't want to injure your feet in a crash in the middle of nowhere. love the vid and ideas though. way to do it cheap.
PennyFarthing Ditto - and not only do you not want to injure your feet, but solid footing on the pedals (with clipless pedals or at the very least, toe clips/straps) is a huge help in hairy handling situations. Ride enough miles, and you'll eventually encounter this.
I don't get why people freak out over riding barefoot. I have Ergo brand pedals that kick ass for bare feet. Every time I slip off of pedals and almost kill myself it's when I'm wearing shoes. And leave the clip in stuff to the pros.
***** I did. It was funny. My front tire fell off and I went over a cliff! HA! It was crazy though, cause I landed in the back of a truck full of pillows! AND the truck was going to Disney! It was the best day of my life. No, actually though, the trip was cut short because my dad got diagnosed with stage four cancer. You can read about it here (wanderingupward.org/category/learn/health/natural-remedies/dads-holistic-cancer-treatment-journal/diagnosis/). I bet you feel really mean, well you ARE! But the cancer part wasn't your fault - you didn't know, but it sure ironically accentuated the rudeness of your comment. Anyway, luckily for you, being a rude person, unlike having cancer, is a learned behavior and you can change your ways at any time. I hope it works out for you :)
The wonderful thing about your setup is that it is obviously not for show. Thanks for being real. If I ever see you on the road, I'll probably recognise your bucket but will also tip my hat in respect. Good luck!
Great video! Riding barefoot... Peanut butter holder... Duct tape dispenser...You are a true innovator bro'! Safe and happy travels
Going to rattle the shit out of you.
By the way...why not wrap the duct tape around the seatpost is you wanna go that way
that pb holder is next level.
Awesome video. Just went on my first 2 day bike tour over the weekend in Pennsylvania.

That front bucket is so cool! I really hope the biking industry is taking note! It has so many applications OMG
Thanks man. Some love it, some hate it, but I don't think anyone can argue with its functionality.
I've been planning my first bicycle tour and came across your video. Absolutely love it. If I'm going to talk to someone about touring give me the guy with the PVC pipe strapped to the crossbar over the guy riding the Surly long haul trucker any day!
skookumchuck1861 Haha, thanks man. Good luck on your tour!
I work at a pool store and once I saw the bucket I knew what it was, good use for it!
lol so what kind of chemicals are normally found in there?
timgoat556 I'm not sure I want to know...
I like the bucket idea - can see how it would come in real handy. I pack my tent / rainfly separate also. Its easier for me to pack it that way too.
Very nice. I love barefoot riding and walking - so convenient.
I laughed when you made something to carry peanut butter :-D
Bucket + bycicle!! One of the greatest combo inventions of mankind alongside silicon chips + electricity and knife (Homo Habilis) + meat. I am ditching my handle bar bag. Waterproofed, spacious + really really useful, awesome.
Three months into the trip and the bucket is holding up like a champ! Highly recommended.
WanderingUpward
here are the ones I built, and they are freaking tough as nails bigbonedbiker.wordpress.com/2013/09/11/kitty-litter-panniers/
Awesome setup. Never seen a dedicated peanut butter holder before.
i really like what you did in the front with the barrel. imma try to do a DIY setup like yours :)
Dry bags work better than panniers and cost WAY less. Just bunjee them to your rack. It works really well.
Love the outside the box approach. Adjust your seat probably please and add some lights!!! As for the barefoot pedaling, it's just a bad idea all around but I'm not your mom. Scrappycat1966 Thank you! Safe travels to you!
Gittie up lmao
I like the idea setting a pail as handlebar storage
Most interesting and practical way to be in a bike, I will copy some ideas
Bare foot riding! You sir, are a genius! Great ingenuity indeed.
Awesome seat angle!
It's a legitimate angle for long rides, by the way. Not suitable for everyone, I guess, Шэбь yet to try it out myself.
Awesome setup I ride also and I know that you want to be prepared for anything
Oh my God those pedals are ingenious
You've truly inspired me! -Less than 2 weeks to go! :)

I laughed good when you said you hang your clothes on the back of your bike to dry haha smart idea kinda weird but a good idea.
I just rode a bicycle coast to coast no income, recorded edited and upload it, Wizard Wes, Ballin
Heading for Alaska

Hi Mat, I like your setup. There is a group on facebook, called Bicycle Touring and some more. Maybe you already know.
A lot of people wear sandals.
G'Day. loved your video. You are traveling just like me.
Nice set up. Hoped it worked the whole time.
Sandals.... use good quality sandals and with all that strapping stay in a smooth road
I like your rig, I might go that route too. It cheaper for me.
Nice. Very crafty you are.
Matt dude I love your videos and I think im going to do that bucket on the front idea for my bike tour! Good idea and why don't you make videos anymore? I just checked your blog and I see you're still posting stuff so that's cool, you should make more videos man! Like how's it going!?

It's been my experience that a few "Bio Hazzard" stickers on your pannier bags help. 😂
I used my bike extensively using sandals. Perhaps some models work well.
Great m8😎 i love People who improwise like MacGyver. Your Just like me. We have the same imagination. Like Einstein said :imagination is limitless
What i did for the front i got thoes giant zip ties and tied 2 crates to the front
3:30 . . . . the Real reason they call him "Nine Toes" . :)
inspirational thankyou
Realistic! How did it end up?
I kinda do a lot like you just less crazy (or you could say a bit more boring)
I don't go barefoot but I wear flip-flops for the same reason.
I wrap the duct tape directly around the frame so it doesn't move and it's less notable.
and peanut butter has been in the bottle cage (only small glasses where I live)
Is this filmed at Possum Lodge .... Red Green's place. Duct tape was a clue.
that saddle angle is crazy! do you not slide down towards the handle bars all the time?
I slide all over the place. I pretty much adjust my seat depending on which part of my ass is least sore that day. I think I've adjusted it every way but backwards, which may not be a bad idea now that I think of it...
Try the seat level. Miracle cure.
is your frame made of steel? i wanted to know if my aluminum frame bike can handle those loads....
Hey Matt, how's the bucket secured to the front?
I used a tight fitting bungee chord
Did u make it to the end? Great video
Thank you. No, I didn't end up making it across the country. I ended up taking three months to make it to Alabama, just because I was finding so many neat places to stay and visit. WanderingUpward oh sorry to hear hopefully your dad pulled thru well mate good effort and adventure...your welcome mate
What you need to go cycle touring:
1. Bucket.
2. Peanut butter.
3. Carpet.
4. Massive pan lid.
How did you do?
Well i have to say this set up is different. I have never seen anybody use a bucket as a front rack. Ways to do things without going too the bike shop for everything you want.
How do people have time to do this?
After graduating middle school we have about 24,000 days to spend in a nearly infinite number of ways. How will you spend your days?
fnkdrmr86 cuz they love travelling and bikes haha
Dude is your bike steel or alloy?
ApocaIypse666 It's alloy. I know, it looks like a steel framed kids bike with the flames and all. It was actually owned by a twelve year old before I bought it. I figured wth, it'll keep people who don't know much about bikes from wanting to steal it.

Your saddle sloped down like that means that your saddle is too high.
This dude here 😉
Tires, you should have went with Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires.
Man lower the camera
riding without shoes... *wince* I ride in my vibrams when I go rockpooling, but I dont think I'd go barefoot, you don't want to injure your feet in a crash in the middle of nowhere. love the vid and ideas though. way to do it cheap.

If it doesn't fold, I don't carry on my bike. No for Bucket for me. Your pump is too large. there are smaller pumps to take.
I don't get why people freak out over riding barefoot. I have Ergo brand pedals that kick ass for bare feet. Every time I slip off of pedals and almost kill myself it's when I'm wearing shoes. And leave the clip in stuff to the pros.
what the hell is wrong with your saddle dude...😉
Be sure that peanut butter has no hydrogenated vegetable oils in it! That shit is really BAD for you!
Hey Mathew, i like your set-up! If you send me your email i will happily send you photos of what my ideas look like. Safe travels to you.
So Funny xD
Fuck is he funny😂
Dude you gotta get a new saddle lol
Supposedly it's a good seat. That's what the people at the bike shop told me anyway...
Peanut butter carrier! Genius!!! BTW, if you wear non cotton socks, you'll finish your ride with dry feet no matter the conditions.
Rick Sander Good to know. Thanks.
its a burden to wash socks!!
The washing isn't so bad. It's the dying that sucks!
WHY a mountain bike? A steel road bike would be a lot better
Looks like he is currently on a dirt road or trail. Mountain bike with street tires should allow him to travel both on and off road.
front bucket is complete nonsense
+CORRIGEEN71 Why? It works for multi-purposes!
Hahahahahahahahahahaha
Hilarious Parody.
You WERE trying to be funny, right?
Hahahahahaha
You're an abrasive old fart aren't ya?
@@wanderingupward1324 nahh, I'm not an abrasive person, I think my comment just rubbed you the wrong way. If so, I apologise.
