Being Swedish I have to say Paulina explained the situation here brilliantly! Actually the SwedenDemocrats haven´t really had to do any campaigning at all- all the other parties, have ,in their great fear of being called racist if they ever pointed that at the root of the increased violence, chaotic schools, sexual violence lies a totally wrecked integration and a unsustainable immigration, actually been the best promotors of the Sweden Democrats! it is only in the last year that some parties have dared to imply in a very mild way that the large immigration has caused huge problems in our society, not least for those who immigrate, and what happens? Media and other left wing/liberal parties have instantly shouted about fascism, and as we Swedes are very, very scared of conflicts and strive for consensus, the critical voices go silent. Canceling culture has been real here in Sweden and that is not only in the media, even among friends and family ,people who has dared say there is a problem with integration and the enormous change in demographics have often lost friends and family members have turned their back to them, afraid that the "racist" contagion will spread on to them. But now , by denying a frank discussion, those people instead see the Sweden democrats become the second largest party in the country....and they still do not understand why!

@@tommyrotton9468 That can be true. Some of the major problems in Sweden now (schools, health, housing) are connected to the sheer numbers of immigration recently, whereas others (gangs, violence, crime) are connected to the type of people allowed in. Immigrants to any country need to comply with the values of that country.

This was inevitable in Sweden and you do not need to be a genius to understand why. The Swedish people are just saying enough of seeing their country being changed beyond recognition and not for the better. It is no surprise the labels are coming out, it is an underhanded way of attacking your opponents but people are waking up to this strategy and are much more concerned with the crime epidemic they have imported through immigration. Integration becomes a joke when you have "no go areas ' and to oppose this is not racist it is common sense.

The current ‘trend’ in bashing Britain on the ‘evils of colonialism’ and such, is, in my opinion coming from a small ‘elite’ of left-wing academics who, rather than encourage credible solutions for positive change amongst the British people, choose to sell their snake oil type political narratives to the lazy: those who view themselves as less-than, unable to see that we all have a responsibility to take part in building upwards, not downwards.
It’s good practice to learn from the mistakes our ancestors made, important within the correct historical context, sometimes that is hard to do, simply because the blame game is profitable, it allows some elites to create smokescreens preventing those alleged victims from moving forward, that way they have a constant supply of willing victims ready to lap up their racist narratives, under the guise of relevancy and transparency.
Isn’t it easier to blame others rather than get off your backside, accept that somethings can’t be changed, learn vital lessons and work on bettering oneself, that way we all prosper? The pomposity of the academic left have given rise to far right political groups, who in turn have taken the middle grounders with them.
So much hypocrisy from across the pond. In my opinion what underpins the hatred and vitriol towards Britain and its monarchy is an overwhelming sense of bitterness and jealousy. A white Queen, who for 70 years acted with poise, love, duty and devotion to all of her subjects, irrespective of race, or culture. King Charles III will continue in his mother’s vein, though a tough act to follow he will find his way and make the role his own.
One of QEII’s greatest legacies is the Commonwealth of Nations which she loved. These nations are not forced to belong, they choose to do so fully aware of their complex colonial history with Britain. That in my opinion, speaks volumes. 🇬🇧

You can say “I’m literally a Communist” on UK television - as Ash Sarkar did - and suffer no ill effects to your career. Ex-Trotskyists such as Andrew Marr are ubiquitous across UK institutions. Joshka Fischer was a personal friend of members of the Baader Meinhof Gang, and this tainted association didn’t prevent him becoming German Foreign Minister. Jose Manuel Barroso was a former Maoist who became President of the European Commission. Angela Davis is a Communist who provided the guns which led to a courtroom shootout in which four people were killed; she later visited East Germany, where she spoke in favour of Eric Honecker’s right to murder East Germans trying to cross the Berlin Wall; and today she’s treated as a genteel professor who never did anything reprehensible.

However I would have liked Cindy to have needled the interviewees on their definition of 'far right', and what makes a political party 'far right'. As Cindy pointed out, nationalist parties are not all 'far right'. in fact many are left of centre such as Plaid Cymru, SNP, Sinn Fein, etc represent the proletariat, rebelling against a dominant external bourgeoisie influence. My local nationalist party, Mebyon Kernow, is certainly not 'far right', more closely alied to a party that represents the proletariat. It is too easy to label parties that support national identity and autonomy as 'far right', as the antithesis of the globalist 'far left'!

When thinking of my country of France, here we have virtually no dynasties in the Republics following the monarchy. Further to that, almost no one seems to care about political parties, and parties are constantly being formed and dissolved. For example, the two parties that made the second round of the election in 2012 got less than 5% each in 2022. The only 'dynasty' you could refer to is the Le Pen family and many have been trying to remove the family from the Nationalist movement due to the toxicity associated with Jean Marie Le Pen.

The discussion on political dynasties is spot on. The republic of Ireland had 3 siblings all members of parliament at the same time. Ireland does seem to welcome intergenerational families in a way New Zealand and Australia do not. Perhaps the emerging Trudeau dynasty is a sign Canada will become a republic. Does it a three generations of leaders to declare a dynasty? Now we see why the Catholic church doesn't allow popes to have biological heirs.

I havent really ever thought of US politics as being pretty close to monarchy, in a sense that you see presidency moved down in a family tree from father to son etc... (not directly, there has to be one period of opposin noble houses ruleship in between)
Thats so true and a good point. But maybe its just natural for humans to want to gravitate toward something familiar.

In Denmark, our queen (Margrethe II, 82) just celebrated her golden jubilee (the actual date of the ascension was in January, but the more public celebratory events were postponed for Covid-reasons) a few days prior to attending the royal funeral in London. With the passing of Elizabeth II she is now the second longest reigning monarch in the world, only surpassed by the sultan of Brunei. Luckily we have been spared much of the vitriole in our discussions of monarchy as a whole and our royals remain quite popular. All the same I can't help but fret a little as I look on at the discussions of the British monarchy going on in America and the wider anglophone world.

The queen has been in most of the populations lives since birth and been in a needed role of neutral stability much needed when you see Truss and her cabinet are simply an identical replacement of Johnsons, both in intelligence of policy and planning along with stupidity of effective thought in what is required , mainly due to short term panic action due to that very same lack of policy and planning which most seem to ignore in the original election of Johnson in favor for loud defiance in Brexit action above anything else , which had also been a disaster .

Part 2 The real question might be not how we can make room for duty and respect in the scientific political world, but rather, how does science work to make such concepts impossible, and so scientific projects of reduction redescription, reinterpretation, and elimination.
In a strong sense of an antinomy, the modern uptake of these sciences of right and self-interest were destined to eliminate duty and respect etc, much like Nietzsche predicted and Anscombe 70 years or so later described.
Modern institutional systems all take self-interest as a given and everybody is in its internecine structure, those at the top are further regulated by laws that treat them as self-interested players to be controlled and determined entirely by external law and force.
People say no one trusts the system or its personal anymore. but really in political science there can be no trust only vague and ever-changing bungles of relations, set up and dropped by changes in atomist affordances.
Problem is with these internecine self-interested contingent changing associations no one can predict anything anymore, no one knows what the meaning of their acts are anymore. in fact, the "art" of political science is to disguise the real end point of policy, to use double effect pragmatically. But what can pragmatic means here without real end and prediction.
it didn't go well in 1914. Watch "The Last Valley" something like..."Sir Castile has fallen to the Duke of so and so" Reply " i don't know if that is a good thing or bad thing anymore. I don't know what it means"

"Public hysteria 25 years ago" and not the same now? I'd say take a second look and you can see plenty of media hysteria (plus the societal and economic frenzy) around the Queen's death, it's quite remarkable, though unsurprising. What's not unsurprising (contrary to Alexander Larman) is that the Queen died, I'm not intending to be disrespectful, but she was 96. There's both too much analysis in this and not enough (freedom of speech and protesting for example). I can't imagine that this is exactly what the Queen would have wanted.

With the amount of support, monetary, and military, that Ukraine has received from the UK, the EU and the USA it would be astonishing if they were not able to push back a bit! Is any other country supporting Russia's efforts in their Special Military Operation? And, on another point, would Putin maybe justified in using the term 'terrorism' in relation to those who support Ukraine. It's probably terrifying to Putin that so much material support is being funnelled towards the Zeylensky regime, with all the ultra-nationalism they are proud to promote.

Part 1 Comments on Douglas Murray interview. We could express the problematic of unelected absolute power by making it analogous with dictatorship and totalitarianism. its modern version is the anthropological idea that the old patriarchy of the family carried over to, what we might express as the "conceptuality" of the tribal leader as leader of an extended family, and that this original difference based on nature and power has carried over and continued its "effect" to the present day. We can do a then both a natural and constructed (Foucault) genealogy and trace the contemporary equality difference as the consequent metric difference to the original natural difference. but of course, there is here an incongruence between the political conceptuality of the cosmology of tribes and the contemporary political conceptuality of democracy. this makes it a mere bad metaphor that the inference to best explanation or model for the current inequalities can be abducted back to that original difference. Even in science there is a choice, a freedom over which general concepts best capture this difference and predict the future with its use. In fact, the choice of general concepts or identities to most simply clarify the data is not originally scientific but rather was the result of political, cultural historical concepts of identities already in play like an intuition here, and then later this choice is supposedly legitimised by the post facto data. So, gender difference now is due to the effects of original patriarchy. Likewise with race and ethnicity difference but here due to the continuing effect of colonialism and empire. it has been unfortunate for this approach that post World War two saw a female sovereign and major female leader in this role.
Our current conceptual politics is dominate by science of representation and causal effect. This has its genealogy traced back by me to Hobbes's science of man as set by our natures as individual self-interest behaviour. Here what is significant is not so much the choice of which identities to arrange the data under, but rather that any action micro or macro must have its moral economic and political "content" in terms of self-interest and causes and subjected causal techniques.
What is really inappropriate, in this scientific image of man, what is really politically incorrect, is the idea anyone could ever act out of virtue or duty or respect for dignity.
we could express it as a kind of denial of a political natural theology. like cosmological and teleological arguments. That is roughly something like: All human action is in essence or natural kinds of a series of self-interested acts. there is no necessary first duty, no necessary first case that is not self-interested. Virtue duty dignity do not exist. So the idea of a Queen doing her duty is like a Mirical, an anomaly for this science of man, a priori. It threatens the ground of the sciences and natural philosophy.
but also, we might express another opposite kind of non-natural theology as something like for all legitimacy to flow form the people there must be duty through the organs and instruments of the state in order to deliver on that content of the people. These duties cannot be in opposition to each other and so a single sovereign must be the original unifying object of absolute duty for all other duties fall under it and are so arranged. Here in lies through the idea that only the sovereign is responsible since all other duties are exculpated to it. The real function of totalitarianism and dictatorship is that no one is responsible except the one at the top.
but in a way also the self-interest natural since everyone can say "everybody does it" and "I am just reacting to everybody else in self-interest". the science then represents this so in the end Bernard Williams internal and external reasons are seen as the same. We can use science to exculpate my action and use laws and duties to exculpate it also. Like the guy on the talk show who said robbery was his job (his station?). and went on the explain his actions as the result of causal antecedents.
