No one in this political discussion seems to understand that having a welfare state and unfettered immigration/ migration, is not possible. For a welfare state to work it relies on having everyone contribute by paying taxes….it cannot and will not work if a large proportion of the beneficiaries of the welfare system have never contributed, and probably never will..

You pre-suppose that economic migrants never find work, pay tax or find other ways to make a contribution to society. Why are Brits more keen on Ukranian refugees. Well apart from the fact that the overwhelming majority of said Ukrainian refugees are women and children being an important fact. It's also hard not to compare the bravery of the Ukrainian people, whose men have stayed to fight for their country. It seems that, despite the numbers of Afghans fleeing their nation, men included, far outnumbering the Taliban, they were not prepared to stand and fight. Apparently it is OK for foreign soldiers to fight and die on their behalf, not so keen themselves. A far easier life to run away, looking to us to provide a new life.
While I somewhat agree with that (and I think other factors also apply), the fact is that Ukrainian men are prohibited by (martial?) law to flee the country and are forced stay and fight.
@@daniel.lopresti Maybe, although some seem willing, including certain numbers of women. But the fact is they are staying, fighting to secure the type of country they want to live in. Afghans didn't like life under the Taliban, were not keen on the Russians either for that matter. Then, when western powers came along, some, agreed to offer support, but others certainly did not. And yes, that is fair enough, we should never have thought to impose western values on a tribal, religious society. Yet, when we withdrew, allowing the Taliban a way to retake control, one again Afghans in their thousands wanted out. So I think it only fair to ask why are they not prepared to actually help fight for, and thus create a nation that they would wish to call home. It seems to me that, unlike the Ukrainians, they want an easy way out.
Totally, we all see it but nobody's permitted to talk about it, and so the silent majority stays sctumm and votes Tory - for all their avarice and general lack of competence while Labour wonder what it is they're doing wrong.
as for overwhelming majority of said Ukrainian refugees being women and children, hopefully you understand the moment the war is over these women and children will be joined by their male partners here, so you eventually get the whole family package anyway, more to follow. as for men fighting for their country, as others explained men age 18-60 are prohibited from leaving the country and have to fight. I am Slovakian and we have quite high number of Ukrainian male refugees here. Why? Because before the rule (prohibition of leaving Ukraine) was implemented, many many men expected this and fled the country right away. So much for fighting spirit. My message basically is - just do not idolize things, and if you do more research on Zelenskyy you find out he is far from an angel he has been paraded around.
@@christinerussell113 It had actually completely escaped me how the Afghan resistance against the Taliban collapsed almost immediately, and yes that does contrast sharply with the situation in Ukraine. I suppose it being a civil war (or a proxy war since one side was propped up by the West) makes a big difference, and possibly some Afghanis either were somewhat sympathetic to the Taliban, or even just didn't see any hope in resisting them. I think Zelensky's statesmanship and positive image has a huge effect on morale, as well as the desire to defend their nation from a foreign invader which they've seen encroaching more and more on their territory for many years now. I think any sense of national identity in Afghanistan (which I don't actually believe ever existed, due to its tribal divisions) certainly would've been all but destroyed at this point. As horrendous as the atrocities being committed by the Russians are, not only in Ukraine but also the suppression of expression/movement/etc within Russia, IMO it still doesn't compare with the brutality (particularly on women) of the Taliban, which might be another reason for families wanting to flee once and for all.
Apparently some Afghan refugees have refused the offer of a four-bedroom house because it is not in London. Many of these refugees have six or more children. And really, Douglas, really(?) are you comparing the money for TV appearances to the wealth of the wife of the Chancellor who is the daughter of one of the richest men in India - a country not noted for its equality laws!
Yes, it's disappointing to see Murray engaging in apologetics on behalf of the corrupt establishment. Mind you, we are talking about a guy whom believes that Al Qaeda was responsible for 9/11 and that the NIST report is an accurate portrayal of how three steel-frame building collapsed due to fire on the same day and for the first time in history. 'Controlled opposition' springs to mind.
I've always thought there was something a bit slimy and ingratiating about the Chancellor. I think it must have been his transparent ambition for the top job. He probably thought he could finesse his way out of the non dom and green card issues.
Regardless of what Douglas Murray said, and I am a fan, the Ministerial Code is very clear. Ministers who break it and lie to Parliament are expected to resign. We need the clown out and Ben Wallace to replace him anyway - the job is beyond BoJo's capabilities.
While the act itself doesn't bother me too much, the thought that always comes to mind is having seen the Monarch having to endure the funeral of her own husband, alone, while these clowns thought it completely reasonable to so flippantly break their own laws that were enforced so viciously on the population.
Yes. Anyone else, I would have no problem, but that it was the government that forced these restrictions on people, instead of just providing advice and support, and then showed no regard to them is so different. I voted Conservative at the last election, and I am furious at this.

Compliments to Cindy Yu for her facilitation and presenter skills: charming, diplomatic and shooting intelligent questions, and a joy to listen to.
Great commentary & insight, as usual. Rory Sutcliffe, particularly. And a treat to hear Douglas Murray’s sensible, boat stabilizing thoughts. Thank you
Really? I found his defence of the corrupt establishment to be obscene. And his reasoning seems somewhat flawed too. He doesn't think Boris or Rishi should resign because it would put the country into turmoil? Suppose that this was an election year; would Murray say that the election should be postponed because a change of PM at this point would be detrimental to the interest of the UK? Or, suppose that this was an election year and being mindful of the public outrage at their hypocrisy and lack of self-awareness, they resigned in order to restore some credibility to the Tories in the eyes of the voters - would Murray's opinion remain the same with regard to the possible negative consequences of observing the Democratic process in the UK? I mean, it's not like we are at war, is it? And if we were, would you really want a self-absorbed and self-indulgent pig like Boris in charge of the British effort? No, Boris is a traitor and Murray's support for him is a betrayal.

I very much doubt he’d be talking about ‘scores that should be put behind us’. Continuity of Government at critical time put aside - it should be unthinkable that our political leaders can break the law etc & get away with it , otherwise democracy in the U.K. is irreversibly harmed.
Perhaps he wouldn’t feel the same if Labour were in power, of course it’s their party that are absolutely tyrannical about Covid lockdown policies, so it would be a much more hypocritical offense
@Kevin Myers it’s only theoretical, since they weren’t in power, but based on rhetoric and comparing the Labour “Left” to the Democrat “Left” in the US, I can guess that left-leaning people tend to be more in favour of government restrictions on freedom, especially in regards to this Covid pandemic
I honestly couldn't care less about something which happened 2 years ago and if that was a party (from the photos) they should all probably get out a bit more.
Agree with almost everything from Peter Pomerantsev with the exception that the Western education is based on what do you think? Thank you, Douglas, for your opinion on that 'partygate', ridiculously blown out of proportion. As a non-Brit, I envy this society which can afford to spend all their energy, at a national level (!), on this sort of frenzy, while there are many more important issues in the country and in Europe at the moment.
I voted Conservative at the last election, very happy that Brexit was somewhat completed. However, while it's true that Labour campaigners have jumped on this, I am also furious about partygate. I was 100% behind advice and support, and 100% against sanctions and lockdowns. I am furious about that. Anything less makes a mockery of Western democracy, we truly do live on Animal Farm, all are equal, just some are more equal than others...
Boris Johnson is fundamentally dishonest and untrustworthy. He lies practically every time he opens his mouth. He made his name as a journalist by making up stories. His campaign for Brexit was based on lies, had nothing to do with wanting to leave the EU and everything about him getting into no. 10. All of this was known yet in 2019 English voters gave him a thumping majority. He got Brexit done but it is too soon to say whether that works out for the better. It is not obvious how things have improved or what will be done differently. Free of the EU, we no longer apply public procurement rules to avoid governments handing contracts to their friends and sponsors. Had Trump been re-elected, he might have been rewarded with an FTA which Trump had indicated he would ‘cut’ for him. Of course that might still happen if both are elected again in 2024 and he will celebrate what the British call the ‘special’ (Batman Robin) relationship.

Doesn’t claiming non-dom status mean that you are declaring that you live less than 6 months a year in the UK ? As the spouse of the government no.2 person, isn’t it preposterous, bordering on perjury ?
No, it’s nothing like 6 months. You’re referring to tax residence. Non Dom just means you’re not initially from the UK and you have a long term home elsewhere to which you eventually intend to return. There have been people living 10, 20, 30 years in the UK and still non Dom.
On non-dom / green card issue, I am struck by contrast in the broadest sense, not detail, with Australia where the ATO Australian Tax Office collect tax on any income you earn - anywhere in the world. Even applies to UK occupational pensions - even though superannuation contributed under same terms in Oz is largely tax free. If it is a UK occupational pension simply treated by ATO as overseas income and taxed. Though a dual citizen, my UK bank like my Australian Bank has my ATO tax file number. Again - like tax not entirely the same - but a number of our politicians have been disqualified from sitting in Parliament when it was discovered they were dual citizens by birth and they had not renounced their UK, NZ citizenship even though they might have not been aware. Deputy Prime Minister had to resign, renounce and then get re-elected. Both tough rules - but straightforward.

I also care about controlling mass immigration, not diluting the benefits and rights of 'Citizenship'; and NOT being forced to deny biological realities in the context women's sports and spaces. I also believe in pursuing a colour-blind society and NOT obsessing over a person's race - Labour now believe the opposite. In the face of those issues (and Labour's appalling positions on all of them) the nonsense of 'Party-Gate' is supremely unimportant to me.
That statement that Rishi hasn't broken any law is in fact false given his fine for partgate this week. I love the new norm whereby criminals run the UK.
Every Tory newspaper said that last time. They were wrong then and they'll be wrong this time. If I was Le Pen I would be asking my backers for speed boat to get all the refugees out of France into the UK. Then let the UK deport them to Rwanda. That's what I would do.

As a member of the public I am now fed up with party-gate. Fine them and move on. This is getting too much prominence when there are much more serious issues ongoing....the war in Ukraine, cost of living increases, a weak American President, uncontrolled immigration, and why is there no debate on the origins of the virus which led to so many deaths, destruction of businesses and draconian restrictions introduced during covid, which led to many of the issues in the first place.
Douglas Murray is spot on, the Prime Minister resigning, especially at such a precipitous time would plunge the country into unknown stability. Imagine what would have happened if, on the eve of WWII, the then Prime Minister had resigned.
My concern is not the fact that Boris did break the rules but the fact, as I understand it, he “misled” parliament. Surely to “mislead” parliament is totally unacceptable.
If Christina Lamb doesn't know why there is a difference between the Ukrainians and Afghans then I am doubting her journalistic skills.... Also, she mentioned the warzone rape issue. Then completely ignores the wartime scale of rape going on in the UK and other western countries by a different army. The numbers are into 7 digits so are comparable, and are racially motivated. Silence.....
Why does Andrew Neil have a figurine of Napoleon behind him with an arm moving side to side as if it is pleasuring itself? !!! Is this symbolic of Marcon?
For once I disagree with Murray; just because something is legal, doesn’t make it right to participate in it. That being said, resignation from one’s political position is usually not the answer. Correction of one’s poor decision making, and changing of one’s behavior does more to help oneself and the country that that person is trying to help lead. Unfortunately, when one run’s for a political position, that person’s family members, and their activities do come under scrutiny. As well it should.
Well this was delightful. Can I just say I think Cindy was a wonderful host here. Clear, good questions and allowed the guest to speak. And all the guest were articulate and knowledgeable, especially that Peter chap. I will say I think Murray might need a break, hope he’s okay.
Truthfully, Not many of us followed the rules.
Apparently some Afghan refugees have refused the offer of a four-bedroom house because it is not in London. Many of these refugees have six or more children. Very few people in this country - especially in London or another large city which would be acceptable - could accommodate a family of that size.

Really, Douglas, Is it okay for the big companies to take advantage of these tax loopholes. Is Rishi politically naive to think he can get to the highest level of politics without thinking that having a Non- Dom as a wife would not impact on the perception of him as a politician.
The whole of Parliamentary Mp's are not fit for the job!
Yes. Anyone else, I would have no problem, but that it was the government that forced these restrictions on people, instead of just providing advice and support, and then showed no regard to them is so different. I voted Conservative at the last election, and I am furious at this.
The discussion about the French presidential election candidates is excellent in clarifying their political as well as character strengths and weaknesses. Anne-Elisabeth Moutet is a verbal dynamo!

I’d love to hear what Douglas had to say if positions were reversed - ie if Labour MPs were found guilty of Party/Cakegate & tax loopholes? I very much doubt he’d be talking about ‘scores that should be put behind us’. Continuity of Government at critical time put aside - it should be unthinkable that our political leaders can break the law etc & get away with it , otherwise democracy in the U.K. is irreversibly harmed.
Perhaps he wouldn’t feel the same if Labour were in power, of course it’s their party that are absolutely tyrannical about Covid lockdown policies, so it would be a much more hypocritical offense
You're talking as if they've been found guilty of murder or something - it was a £50 fine. The end of democracy 😂

I voted Conservative at the last election, very happy that Brexit was somewhat completed. However, while it's true that Labour campaigners have jumped on this, I am also furious about partygate.
I was 100% behind advice and support, and 100% against sanctions and lockdowns. I am furious about that. What I do care about is the ultimate sanction, if the PM or any other MP has been found to have lied to parliament, to the nation, has demonstrated his untrustworthiness, his lack of basic honesty he must either resign of be sacked, even tho “the heavens may fall”.
It's not about the cake it's about the repeated lying.
No one's even said what kind of cake it was. It could have been a sponge with jam or a mixed fruit type of cake. This is probably why the investigation has taken so long. The Met are nothing if not thorough.

No, it’s nothing like 6 months. You’re referring to tax residence. Non Dom just means you’re not initially from the UK and you have a long term home elsewhere to which you eventually intend to return. There have been people living 10, 20, 30 years in the UK and still non Dom.
Btw I’m saying it’s right, just that those are the current rules
