10 Best Role Playing Games of 2022

- If there's one genre that never seems to run out of steam regardless of what situation the industry at large might be in, it's RPGs. Though they've been a pillar of the medium for nearly as long as the medium has been around, the last decade or so has seen role playing games rise to a level of unprecedented prominence, to the extent that mechanics and ideas associated with the genre frequently find their way into other unrelated categories of games.
2022, like most other years, was brimming with numerous excellent RPGs from beginning to end, and here, we're going to recognize what we felt were the best of the let, before crowning one of them as the king of the hill.

I feel like the term rpg is meaningless these days. Like I would never consider games like Horizon or Dying Light RPG’s. You’re not doing any role playing. You’re playing an established set protagonist and moving through a set story where not even your choices matter in any way. Sure they have crafting like every other game these days, and skill trees like every other game, but that doesn’t make them RPG’s. No one would call Last of Us, Death Stranding, God of War or many others with crafting or skill trees RPG’s. Games like Horizon and Dying Light are more open world action adventure games than anything. They certainly don’t provide the player with any role playing whatsoever or even consequences to their choices so you can’t even play a villain or a hero or anything at the most base roles of good and evil. By this logic almost every triple A game would be considered an RPG if it had an open world or crafting, or leveling. Which is like all of them these days.
Dying light 2...LOL wtf is wrong with this channel. I also "love" how they kind of just added Xeno 3 as an 11th entry (and with just a couple of screenshots) in a top 10 list because of all the criticism they got for not including it in their previous lists.
Not sure if Dying LIght 2 really deserves to be even a candidate for best RPG of 2022.

2 Pokemon games and considering Dying Light 2 and Horizon FW an RPG, one can see you guys played a lot of RPGs. Where is Chained Echos?
Expeditions: Rome, Triangle Strategy and Tactics Ogre: Reborn deserve a place here.

@@panagiotisdoulaveris5592 it's probably my favourite rpg (jrpg?) of the ps4 era. It really is doing everything right for me personally I can't stop playing its dope, it's up there with elden ring for my favourite games of this year and its easily one of my favourite rpgs of all time
RPG is all about roll playing a guy with this or this armor and when you loot stuff apparently
This is interesting…for me, a role playing game is one where your character’s actions can affect the outcome of the story, and several of these games don’t fit that definition…but who knows what an rpg is at this point I suppose 🙃
I always though rpgs were games where you’re not a defined character. Hell, I used to assume they were those who your character was not even voiced.

Yep the what is an RPG debate is pretty useless nowadays as most games on these list are barley RPGs at all. I've seen the latest Tomb Raider games called RPGs online as well.🤣

I get that some folks like Pokemon games but listing them as "best RPGs" is a joke. It's a franchise that literally goes backwards in terms of quality with each new game.
There are soooo many indie RPGs that deserve the spotlight much more than those...

Elden Ring is also the best FPS. And sports game. And dating sim. And turn-based JRPG. And we're going to go ahead and pre-emptively give all the next awards to whatever FromSoft makes next. It's about time someone took over for The Beatles.

I think Horizon's biggest problem is the ham fisted RPG elements. Just make it a pure action game like Ghost of Tsushima or Spider-man.
Ghost and Spiderman throw in the same shit. There are crafting elements and skill trees there as well. I don’t think Horizon or Dying Light or others like it should even be considered RPG’s. Genre has lost all meaning. Given that Last of Usc God of War and others also use crafting, skilly trees, and such, why not call those RPG’s as well. None of these games have actual role playing in them and your choices don’t even matter at that so you can’t even role play as the baseline good or evil, nevermind your own nuanced character. Basically everything is called a RPG these days if it has crafting, a skill tree, and an open world. They’re more open world action adventure games than anything.
Steel Rising>Thymesia, did people just not play that one? Better weapon variety, better gameplay, better design, better bosses, just...better. Thymesia was okay, but wore thin by the end.
This list has a few glaring omissions -- Triangle Strategy, Live Alive, Chained Echoes (which understandably likely released in the middle of production for this video), Tactics Ogre Reborn, and others, especially when the same list includes Horizon Forbidden West and Dying Light 2. Not trying to gatekeep, and it proves that genre tags are a terrible way to organize games nowadays, but if we're trying to create a list of the best RPGs of the year, of which there were a TON of great ones (and some mediocre ones, too), then as well produced as this video is, I feel the games on it missed the mark a bit. Not trying to be mean -- the content you've produced is high quality and definitely made with love.

Most of the other games on the list don't really qualify either though.
Is horizon a rpg game ??? Not an action adventure game ? Maybe it has light skills and leveling up but an Rpg game??? Sony don't even make RPGs

Elden Ring is not RPG it is an Action game with RPG elements. Borderlands is not a RPG, it is a First-Persion Shooter with RPG elements.

I love everything about From softwares games (the world, the music, the lore, the aesthetics etc etc) except for playing the games 🙃 never been able to enjoy them…always find the experience frustrating and repetitive, but in fairness I am terrible at them so maybe it’s my fault

Elden ring is the most awarded game and imo the best game ever made which doesn't tries to be netflix movie with edgy takes.

This is from a quick google search but i think i agree with something in line with this roughly.
Anyways, elden ring is actually a rpg. But it's an action rpg.
Choices deciding story progression as OP essentially said isn't necessary though it is indeed an element many RPGs do have.
