- This video is made up of several different outings. I've been going through my archives looking for some great footage to share with you that I haven't yet shared. There are some gorgeous pipe extractions of course and other items which have been lost or discarded in the mud over the years. During the second half of the video I meet up with Mud Buddy @Si-finds Thames Mudlark and some other muddy friends, Matt and Mike. Mike tells me about an incredible 17th century gold mourning ring that he found on the Thames recently and I explore the story behind it. It's also a good opportunity to show you some of the rings I have found over the years.
Mike Walker's instagram account is : mike_mudlark_cuffs. Follow him to see his amazing Thames finds.
Matt's instagram account is : mungomatt2019 - and again, follow him for some great Thames finds and adventures
And of course, follow Simon Bourne on @Si-finds Thames Mudlark
You need a permit to mudlark on the River Thames and all the details can be found on

Thanks for picking up that plastic. Birds can get it around their neck and then they can't feed anymore. I once found a dead seagull on the beach with those plastic rings around it's neck. Still makes me sad when I think about it.
yes, it's very sad indeed
I enjoyed the Canada Goose parade at the beginning.
yes I loved that too!
@@nicolawhitemudlark We have a fair sized river going through my city and probably hundreds of ponds built all around the city in the past 30 years. We have several thousand Canada Geese here who are full-time residents. There are V's criss-crossing the city at all times of year.
Me too! My nine year old son has his goose journal here in Edmonton complete with feathers and down. We wondered where they'd gone🍁because you can't cancel thier flights 🌍
@@constancemiller3753 I always enjoy watching them, whether in the air or on the ground. Because of the pretty much ideal environment, they have lots of bugs and other goose forage in the summer, and after harvest, there's lots of field corn kernels and soybeans in the bare fields. It would not surprise me if they went as far as 50 miles outside Des Moines in all directions.
@@constancemiller3753 😉
Love the shot of the Canadian tourists at the beginning,it looks like you were giving them a guided tour.
Kelvin Stewart , those beautiful birds are a pest species in my area. They are here year round
Vive la Canadienne
@@kentuckylady2990 same here in Boulder Colorado . I had to put an effort into changing the bike routes I used for both getting to work and pleasure after there had been so much goose poop no matter how often it was cleaned up that I got splattered with some on my bike lol. Almost got me in the face!! I've held a serious grudge on them since...
You are so lucky living where humans have been manufacturing artifacts for a couple thousand years. I live on the West Coast of the US. YOU, find a Roman coin, or a 15th century artifact and say: (me trying, but failing miserably to imitate a British accent) “Oh that’s quite nice isn’t it?” And go on about your day. ME, I find a 1955 Penny with my metal detector and scream: “Woo Hoo!” Do a 10 minute victory dance and show everyone I can see, whether or not they care; (I get some pretty strange looks and the odd occasion where the police are called).
ha ha that is funny! yes, I know we are very fortunate.
Nicky L - Yes, you are right, there ARE some interesting sites I can search, my best find ever is a Spanish 4 Reale piece (silver coin) from an old trading post dated 1732. I theorize it was dropped in the late 18th century (out in the desert). I have also found a Native American stone bowl, which a university investigated and said it could be anywhere from 800 to 2,000 years old, so there IS stuff to find. But compared to this river, they are few and far between. Nicole walks 100 yards and finds artifacts from 50 to 2,000 years old, I AM JEALOUS!!!!!
Ha ha, that's brilliant. Horses for courses. 👍
Nicola I was thinking to myself, "she's going to pick up that plastic, I know she is..." and you did not disappoint as usual. 1962 was a great year, according to my Mom, my siblings didn't think so, another mouth to feed in the house. Another grand video, thank you for bringing us along on your adventures!
Hi Mark, you have the same name as my brother.
He's Mark Andrews as well.
Spending 30 minutes or so with Nicola, and friends, with the Thames, with London -- a clay pipe here and there, a coin or two, some fascinating shards of pottery -- and more -- that's when I can relax and "Everything is right with the world." Thank you Nicola!
Glad to hear it! x
@@nicolawhitemudlark -- Great stories go along with your adventures, your friends, your discoveries as they happen and your research into your finds. *THAT'S* what makes you Queen of the Mudlarks! Or, as the ancient Romans would say, "Regina inventionis thesauri magni limus" :-)
Dear Niki, what a fun trip!, Just watched Si find a Roman bowl, & now that mourning ring Mike found, like you Brits say, I'm "Gob Smacked"!!!!! I'm enthralled with your history, & just to be able to find it lying around on Old Mother Thames, is fantastic!! Thank you, it's been fun, fun, fun¡!!!!!!!!!!!
That CD, saying "Leave Me Alone" & "I'm Busy" would be perfect to hang on the outside of a work or hobby room door. Lol
I literally laughed out loud when you found the Im Busy CD, with the song "Leave Me Alone" on it!! That was priceless! You reaction to it was priceless too! You are soooo sweet and kind and I think truly shocked over this message in the mud you found! ( : I loved it soooo much great finds Mike Cuff and everyone! Live when you team up with Mudlarking friends! ( :
The button: a dragon holding a trident?
You do know many if us anxiously await our sunday morning dose of your video?
Or Sunday evening if you're here in the UK! 🇬🇧
Is it meant to be a Sea 'Lion'?
I think its a sea horse holding a trident.
@@Beth_D An Essential part of my (and probably quite a lot of people's) Plans for the day😄
I, too think that the figure represents a manticore, although it could be a representation of Geryon, as seen in the Cadiz Memorial in Westminster: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C%C3%A1diz_Memorial
Your so lucky to live near there. Here in Maine,USA we don’t find anything old on the beaches. Love all the old clay pipes
I think that one person CAN make a difference. Finding and researching lost history and sharing with the world, being creative and charming and caring and at the same time cleaning up the environment! Nicola White IMO is one person that HAS made a difference! She went from searching for pop bottles for ice cream benefits as a child to Mudlarking Artiste extraordinaire!
You read my mind with that plastic! THANKS for picking it up, Nicola! Also, the ring with the face is Shirdi Sai Baba.
Thank you! 😘
My favorite Sunday evening show
In a world that's been turned upside down, from a place overtaken by madness thank you for sharing some simple pleasures. It's just the respite I need now and then. Consider yourself hugged.
Thank you
@@nicolawhitemudlark sorry if the hug was over the top.
I look forward weekly to your show Nicola. Love the effort you put into learning the history of the objects you find and the backstory of those who produced them.
Nicola, keep showing the birds of the Thames. Love your videos and the history of what your find. Keep going, I'll be watching.
Nice evening entertainment Nicola.
Many thanks 😃🥂👍🏻
I found the history of the mourning ring so fascinating! I think I might like a ring engraved with the year "2020 pandemic" or something like that to commemorate our global pandemic! Then when I get tired of the ring I can throw it into the Thames for a future mudlarker to find! Then the future mudlarker can tell the people about the ring coming from our era. Also enjoyed you tellng us where the word quarantine derives from! Have to mention I love your hair color..I see you've been over to your hairdresser to have your hair done! It looks gorgeous!
Greetings from Clay County, Missouri, USA!
40 days, hmmmmm Learn something new everyday, .................. IF I'm humble enough
Thanks again! Luv the nature shots, especially the seal. 10 thumbs up! \m/ later
so pleased you picked up the plastic ! you are turning me into a mud larker!
Sounds like a lucky day! A Ring... and a very lovely button, a pipe or two and some geese to share your day with.
I love how random bits of broken pottery can reveal little surprises! They are so beautiful in their own unique way 💖☺️
Great video, Nicola. Stunning videography!
Thank you!
What a lark! My spirits rise when I see a new video by you! I really love looking at all your collections; particularly the rings and pipes. All the best from this ancient Yank! ❤️🇬🇧🇺🇸
You have fine and Fowl (😁) weather! Love watching you!!!
Great as per usual Nicola, looking forward to your walk through the park one day ..... to rake me back xx
This segment is pure soul treat 💜 Thank you kindly for the educational journey ! Love the very end of the video 😂🥰
Thank you!
Hello again !!! Thanks for another exciting adventure 🌸..... fun fun fun 🌈
Another awesome video, thank you Nicola. Wow some incredible finds!! The ring Mike found is amazing, especially to have all that information on it 😊
Lovely video. Thanks Nicola. Great to see you creeping up to the 100K subs. x....
Thank you John!
I honestly would watch multiple videos of you panning over your find trays narrating little stories 😊
OK! noted. Will do some similar
It's beautiful to see London with blue skies -- I think that when I was there in the mid-1970's there was a law against blue skies! Cheers!
Nicola you never disappoint with your videos I don’t watch much tv now I only watch mudlark thank you so much
ah glad you enjoy them Susan x
I feel like those Geese got lost! Boys, you can come back now! It's warm here!
Lovely, soft video this time
- wonderful rings for so many different occasions ie: the mourning rings, such a poignant message 🖤
Thank you, Nic - love from Denmark 🌸💕
I am always amazed at your alacrity. Thank you for keeping on. Keeping on for those of us who live vicariously through your discoveries and your wonderful research.🌹❤️
Thanks Hugh
The Shard is quite beautiful lit up! It must be especially magical, being on the shore at night!
Hello and greetings from Canada Nicola🙂 I have been watching you and Si for about 6 months now. I don't comment much, I wanted you to know that I love your videos, all your hard work to get them out in a timely fashion!
Thank you so much!
I love the red striped blouse, very fetching! I enjoy the scenery and nature shots you include
I believe you are growing younger and more vivacious with every post. Hearts and smiley faces.
Fascinating I learn something new each time I watch your postings.
Thanks Paul
Hi Nichola, always great to watch your videos, loved the night shots of London, such a magic city. X
Thanks Susan! X
I cannot believe how many clay pipes you find! You have a great eye for spotting cool stuff in that muck!
I do find it fascinating when you catch sight of a seal in such an urban area. Very special.❤️
I can't stop watching your channel, the content is so fun, interesting people, areas, artifacts, and a history lesson, all in one. Loving it‼️ I never look around the beach for artifacts but now I will.
Obsessed with momento mori especially with the plaited hair... a dream find 🧚♀️
9:02 I couldn't stop laughing at that!!! 😂😂😂 "Leave me alone."
"I'm busy"
😂😂😂
I actually love some of the colors on the pipes as soon as you dig them up. Too bad you can't fire one before it turns white. That long one was really pretty!
A friend and I enjoy a pipe of good tobacco together every time we meet up as a little kind of ritual we've been doing for some years now, ever since we spent 2 full seasons together in total solitude on a mountain tending to a large property. We both developed a fascination for the old clay pipes as well and found on Etsy there are alot of folks who carry on the tradition of making them in that very style. Take a peek, they're also very cheap even foe the long or detailed ones. And you're also supporting a small business and keeping a tradition alive.
Interesting video Nicola, thanks for showing your ring collection. Jewellery is something I never seem to find and it was a real pleasure to see yours x
Up to now, I've been impressed with your pipe finds, but those rings trump the pipes! The fake diamond is beautiful. The one with five stones looks like the style of rings in our family. Apparently a sea captain in the family came back with a pouch of rubies. Lots of them turned out to be garnets. They still made beautiful rings. Love the stories ❤️
Pat Sutherland Garnets were once, and in my opinion still should be, more valued than rubies
I cannot tell you how happy I was to find a new Sunday video because it was my 59th birthday. What better gift than a new video of yours sweet lady!! I never tire of searching the Thames with you Nicola!!!
Thank you ! Always enjoy your posts! Cheers
Thank you for picking up the plastic!
Magnificent picture of the tall pointed building during day and just slides right into night shot. Love the blue light at the top of it. Very nicely done. Again enjoyed your video. Love all the stories from history. Nice seeing Si, Matt and Cuffs. Thank you . ARROW *🎱. 🇺🇸. ❤️
Thank you!
@@nicolawhitemudlark what is that building? Us from the USA would like to know.
Susan Barnett-Kiengsiri that is The Shard :)
I learn so much from you! Thanks Nicola! Hope you find the things you desire!🌺👍♥️
Hi Nic...the c.d..made me laugh...go away im busy...and there's you mudlarking....im luving my mondays with you and Si....xxxx
I love that ring. How beautiful. Such a awesome find
Wonderful video, thank you Nicola☮️🇨🇦
Thanks so much Nicola. Great info and history with your finds. I imagine the energy in your studio from all of these objects, some very personal. I wonder if a psychic could tell you about the personal or historical context of them. Stay well. Stay safe. See you next week.
What an interesting idea!
I have to tell you Nicola, I came across your channel by chance, binge watched all your videos and then got more and more interested, found Si finds, Northern Mudlarks, Tom Burleigh, the Johnson's, Kit and caboodler's and more. I also discovered that what I had been doing for years actaully had a name- MUDLARKING. I watch all the mudlarkers and have found loads of bottles and artefacts - some of which I have sold n Etsy and Ebay which has now meant that I am gradually paying off my credit card!!! Thank you Nicola for leading me off on this path!!
That's wonderful Jan! xx
Thank you for posting Nicola. I had never heard of mourning rings before!
an old penny from the year was i was born lovely video again nic x
Excellent as always Nicola, did you see Si's lovely Roman pot, smashing. Keep looking. Stay safe. 🇨🇦🐘😘
Heh. Maybe don't use the word, "smashing," next to "pot".
Those geese were in my back yard on Tuesday with about 100 others. I always look forward to seeing you Nicola. Stay safe.
More awesome historical content. Thank you.
Hi from Western Australia 👋👋glad to see you well. Great finds all round 👏👏👏👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️
I got my 80 yr old mom addicted to watching your videos and she likes Si-Finds as well
Excellent! Please say hi to your mum from me x
Thank you for the lovely vid! And picking up the plastic soda rings. :^)
Whoa Nic a different colour stripes top - blimey pushing the boat out or what? Another very entertaining one. thanks
Nicola...I could watch you walking along the Thames while recording while pointing at items of interest.
Have a Blessed and Wonderful Day
🙏😁🙏😇🙏😎🙏
Love the videos Nicola! Look forward to watching next week from
Hospital for knee surgery. Just got 2 books on mudlarking to read too! Wish to come to the Thames someday!
Love the idea of the mourning ring
I love the CD find! You're definitely busy Nicola! Jewellery would be a great find but you can't go past your amazing pipes! 😊💖
Yeah Nic, I was yelling, “pick up the plastic can holder”! . Cute intro . I was just wondering - Are most mudlarkers single? My husband thinks I pack too much home from the beach . I’d say he’s just lucky I don’t live by the River Thames- then he might have something to complain about.
Loved the opening with the parade of your homies!
Thank you! yup, my home geese :)
Love your video Nic ❤👍
And love the geese at the beginning of your video. You always capture the wildlife around the Thames in your videos and I love it, so cool ❤😊 thanks for sharing 👍
Love it. even at 00.08 Tuesday morning.
Not watched the video yet but just have to say - the lovely shot of the (Canada?) Geese at the start; they so look like mini dinosaurs walking along, don't they? :) Kind of amazing it took us so long to work out that they are the descendants of dinos really!
Thankyou yet again. Stay safe. See you next week. Jules.
I LOVE skulls! I would wear that ring with the skull just because! What a great find!!
Hi Nicola I am from Newfoundland Canada 🇨🇦 and I just wanted to let you know that watching your videos has made me want to explore the beaches and rivers here. Mind you I don’t expect to find anything as amazing as your finds but wish me luck.
I'm amazed........ You've got such a good eye for spotting things. I would never had seen the corner of that plaque you pulled out of the mud. :)
Your videos are so much fun to watch.i cant believe all the history on that river.
Thank you
Hi Nicola, boy you got my heart racing when l saw all those rings, naturally, being a jeweller l was all a gog. You could do a talk at whatever jewellery schools there are in London, and have all the students excited and enthused. Thanks for showing them to us. Good work.
Surrounded by handsome men lucky you!😍
Thought the same thing! All dark and handsome. I would have had a hard time focusing on the mud!
Me too 😍
ha ha dont Linda. They will get big headed :)
Thank you for your videos. Love learning about history. 👍😊❤️🕊
always look forward to your videos :-)
Great video, Thank you, Nicola
Thanks for another lovely trip through time, just what this rather stressed out lad needed. Great stuff.
Great history lesson about that ring.😎✌️
I continue to enjoy your videos, mudlarking is spectacular. You are in such a fantastic place to do that. Have you branched out yet to narrate children's audio books? Lol, wonderful voice. It's part of the charm and magic of your videos
Thanks for another terrific video Nicola. It was quite a thrill to come across this one the same day that it was posted - and it already has more than 13000 views! Love the new jersey as well!
Love the wildlife you include.
My cat, Babe Raan, enjoyed watching the geese at the beginning of your video. Something for everyone!
Love the red stripes!
Thanks for another great video!
Great vid nic, you climbing up the ladder was a real treat😘
As usual enjoyed the video. Love your red and white top. Stay healthy and enjoy the days.
Always a treat to open RUclips and see a new video! Great views of the wildlife and cityscape. Thank you Nicola for giving us a bright spot in our week. ☀️
