I saw Phil speak at Harrisburg Pennsylvania during the hunting show a few years ago. I've been following the duck commander for years. He's partly responsible for leading me to God which I'm immensely grateful of.
I bought Phil's book, the theft of America's Soul. A great read btw.

Fond memories of opening day for fishing. Froze my ass off, but fishing with grandpa, my dad, and uncle was worth eating some lead sinkers

My maternal grandfather was a warden at Cummings prison in Arkansas back in the late 50's and they were a self sufficient farm. Everything we ate was grown or butchered there and I remember the fresh milk, fresh churned butter and biscuits, fried chicken, smokehouse with hams, bacon and sausage and fresh vegetables as being the best food I've ever eaten and I was only 6 or 7 years old. I totally understand what Mr. Phil is talking about ...
I sure could use one of Uncle Marvin’s pickle jars in my backyard.

Being Phil’s uncle, he probably made a pretty small living trapping and such. He had to be very thrifty to save $40,000 and do it without earning interest!
Speaking of killing your own chickens, my grandparents were farmers and I remember on a visit to them when I was a kid, they killed a chicken and after plucking it, they built a fire to hold it over to singe the pin feathers. I’m 57 years old, but I can still remember the stink of feathers being burnt off! My grandma then cut it up and then said, “we didn’t have toys when we were kids. This is what we played with” and handed me the part below the drumstick and showed me how to pull the leader and make the claws flex! Most mothers now would have a fit if someone handed their child a bloody chicken foot to play with!
My grandfather kept a milk cow and I still remember how good that milk tasted! My grandma would skim most of the cream off to make butter, but there was always some in the milk that we stirred up so it was in the milk. They would keep it in big gallon sized jars I the refrigerator. Good memories!

Indeed! Lots of folks would hide their life savings in walls, jars, etc and now their kids and grandkids are stumbling across these hidden treasures. Just think, $30,000 in 1930's money is several million now!
That generations knew banks were risky at that time, as banks crashed during the Great depression and bank robbies and people lost their savings.

Wonderful story! My great great grandmother never went to a doctor until she was 100 years old. That was just for a checkup, she was given a clean bill of health. She was 109 when she passed away.

During the depression my grandfather had one of the only hay bailers in the hill country of Texas. He made loads of money and never put it in the bank. He buried it on his property. We the family believe most of it is still there, because my brother and I found a keg of wine he buried. The wine was in an oak barrel and had been buried for many years. We were only 8 or 9 years old and thought it was koolaide and drank some. That’s how my Papa Henry got in trouble with grandma Sarah.
I can remember eating pheasants and rabbits with lead shot in them yeah oh boy that was some good eating there

Sounds like home to me. We lived the same way. Hunt, fish, raise cows, pigs and chickens and had a garden and a Smoke house like you are talking about Phil. I could listen and compare stories with you all day. My uncle buried a coffee can full of money...

Phil reminds me of my dad, so so much. My dad died at 73 in 2015 and I wish I could listen to just one more story.

I needed this story, this morning, Thank You.
Not the same but i was raised by my Grandparents whom i would sit with and listen to their stories of how they were raised in Puerto Rico back in 1935 or so. They talked about living from the land and cooking with fire as well as being happy with much less than i has when I was being raised. Dad as i called my Grandpa came into the knowledge of Jesus at the same age i am now and lived on to become a Pastor and a preacher of the gospel. I admired him so much and loved him dearly. Im embarrassed now that i become agnostic and completely detached from the Word as i listen to Mr. Phil and reminisce about my parents. Im stuck in a dark hole man. Im so ungrateful. Its been 3 weeks now where i have been glued to this channel and i cant bring myself to stop watching reruns of the show which Dad loved and i never watched. I once heard that God was irresistible and I couldn’t escape Him… could this thing i feel be him? I done turned so far from this i dont know my way back. When i was younger i had a good run with the Lord and i messed it up. Ima keep watchin’ though, keep em comin’ 🤙🏾

Great to see Dan the man actually talking in the video =).Great story Phil We Natives never used shotguns mostly 22s and 303s and 30 ot 6 but I've heard of many of the old settlers dying of lead poisoning in our north hundreds of miles from the help of course. In the 30s and 40s the bow was the big hunting tool and traps but today we use modern rifles for all our meat. Love the old stories I tell my gal a lot of them as she is my second lady and a city girl but she won't eat no wild food except the roasts we get from young people who hunt all the time on our reserve. Thanks for the word of God and Jesus Phil you have helped me on the narrow path and Im forever grateful to you and your family. Megwiitch~isi.

What an amazing story when I was just a wee lad my Dad's dad went through the depression and rumor was he put money in tin cans and buried it. Where he and my uncle lived and I don't recall if they found anything but one of his sons was a backhoe operator he dug up every place they thought it might be and did not find anything that I recall.
I remember those days
My wife's grandma didn't believe in banks, they found $180,000 in bonds, $80,000 cash in a brown paper bag and she had hid silver bars that she knitted covers for and used as door stops. Her other grandpa trusted banks and started Fifth Third Bank and left her mother a multi millionaire. Each to his own I guess but I always wanted to dig up her grandma's yard, we lived in the 10 room house with silver bar door stops.

My Daddy remembers those hog-killin days. When I was growing up our church would get together and make barbecue and do what they wanted with the various parts of the hog. It was a community-building event.

Pretty cool. I remember older relatives of my family talking about farming and fishing during the Great Depression, since they weren't so tied to money they bartered for what they needed. Kinda wish I was that thrifty.
How marvelous hard working Uncle Marvin was able to put aside such a large bequest. Would have paid cash for a 5 bedroom suburban home in a professional New Jersey neighborhood in the 1960’s.

Well I declare! Phil Robertson has had a life of adventure in his family. Phil and Uncle Si are the King of Adventures and their stories. Jase is surely creeping up close to catching up to his Senior family members. Phil is a natural born story teller and telling this story about his Uncle Marvin may be the link to Phil life. Phil seems to may have inherited his Uncle Marvin attributes and character on being self-sufficient and doing manly activities. The $40,000 dollars in a pickle jar and the mother winning the Price Is Right Gods Favor has been on their life for a long time.
