This is my favorite Roy Clark song. The famous Yankee baseball player, Mickey Mantle requested this to be sung by Roy at his funeral. I watched Mickey Mantle’s funeral and Roy sang this. It was beautiful.❤️
My favorite song as well
I liked this song as a kid but now at 68 I understand it on a different level.
The days are long, but the years are short.
Roy Clark was a great entertainer, humble man & super talented. He was both a singer & musician. His guitar & banjo playing are legendary. A lot of musicians & artists today could learn a lot from his style & technique. Quite a few people have covered this song "Yesterday When I Was Young", but I really like Roy's hit version from 1969. The song is a somber recollection of a wasted youth that led to a lonely adulthood.
It's really very hard to avoid this feeling that he's singing about when you get older, if, things don't turn out in life as we planned or hoped or expected. And even sometimes when they do. When you look back, man, the choices we made and the outcomes we didn't ask for, is a hard pill to swallow. SO glad you reacted this... his guitar playing usually takes the stage for most, but he could sing so well too.
Rain on his tongue in ealry life, then tears as he is older.
OUTSTANDING SONG.
Tasha. I can relate to this song. I just turned 80 yrars old. Thought I'd never live past 50. Time f flies by when u get 50. Your young and beautiful cherish every day. I still do, but at my age I don't make any long range plans.
My favorite of Roy is "I never pick cotton." Another good one is
"Thank God and Greyhound you're gone."
Roy was all over the tv in the 1960s/70s.
Plus, he hosted the tv show "Hee Haw" with Buck Owens. Very talented man. Roy could do it all!
The song was written and originally performed in French by Charles Aznavour. It was subsequently released in English as "Yesterday, When I Was Young". It is considered one of Aznavour's greatest hits. Peace out.
Ooh, I forgot about his original version! Thank you for the reminder. I’m going to go look it up now. I loved him when I was a kid as he was one of my mother’s favorite singers. Off I go!
I cry when I hear this song. Very relatable my life went by so fast. It is scary ! Im 55 and just think back and just sigh..at all the wasted time
Roy doing "Malaguena," on the tv show, "the Odd Couple." Simply amazing.
Love Roy's voice. And your reaction is so down to earth.
Exactly.
Roy has more of a catalog than some folks realize. My favorite is probably the angry, defiant 'I Never Picked Cotton,' or the humorous 'Thank God And Greyhound.' Another hit was the celebratory 'If I Had To Do It All Over Again (I'd Do It With You)' - which Roy sometimes jokingly called 'If I Had To Do It All Over Again (I'd Do It All Over You)' - and the joyous 'Honeymoon Feeling.'
Probably the most introspective song ever written.... He is one of the best singer, guitar/banjo players ever.
Another song of reflection would be Bob Seger 'Like a Rock'. Not so much regret like this Roy Clark song but rather looking back on time.
I so agree that time is going so fast! I'm 72 and it seems like just yesterday when I was young! I have such a good life, though, that I don't really relate to the sadness in the song, but the lyrics are so poetic and beautiful. My faith in Jesus Christ means that I have peace even when things are tough, but those lyrics could certainly apply to all of us in some ways. Your reaction is very thoughtful and much appreciated! Roy Clark was a very special extremely talented man so kudos to you for reacting to his music.
A song everyone should play at their birthday party
This was one of the best reactions I have ever heard. Thank You....❤💯
You're so right that time accelerates as we age. I think the regret in this song is of a person who spends his whole life chasing pleasure after pleasure and never taking the time to reflect, enjoy, and share those pleasures.
That train only goes faster as you age.
So true.
Yesterday is on my list to play at my memorial when I die and also Memories..
i was watching roy clark on stage in front of a train track and when he played the orange blossum special a train passed behind the stage
This one hit me today, Tasha. I lost my childhood friend, Sunday before last. Thanks for the reaction.
Frist time I heard it, It was a lesson on life, always beware of time and what you do with it.
This song always makes me think of the Frank Sinatra song, When I was 17. They both have a similar vibe musically, but especially lyrically. Looking back on their lives from the vantage point of old age. Lovely songs, both of them.
Tasha, as you well know, Roy was an excellent guitarist. But man could he sing. This song left an indelible impression on me as a 16 year old when it was released. For some songs we don't pay attention to the lyrics that much --but the words or powerful.
At one point I think you were going for the line : Burning the candle at both ends.
From James 4:14 : "What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes." (NIV)
Thanks for your thoughtful and unrushed reaction. I appreciate that.
Tasha - you got to watch a few old episodes of “Hee Haw” sometime - Roy was one of the hosts, you’d love it!
For the record. I always hit the like button before you even start the video. lol Respect to you and T. . Amazing song that always makes me sad. Time does fly by. I'm 58 years old now and I'm looking for that exit ramp in this life.
I always thought Roy's voice was perfect for this song. That little rasp he sometimes had in his voice while singing makes him sound like he could be a man who time was catching up with - even though he was still a relatively young man when he recorded this.
This song was on an 8-track that my father played in the car when I was just a kid and, even then, it gave me chills. It has always been my favorite Roy Clark song (yes, I know he didn't write it). Thank you for your thoughtful reaction to this Tasha. When I saw it come up I knew you would love this for its deep meaning.
Yes, when one is a child, time does seem to proceed slowly. Hence, the words from Joni Mitchell's "The Circle Game" to a sixteen-year old:
''And they tell him take your time it won't be long now
Till you drag your feet to slow the circles down.''
Fantastic artist with such heart!!! Thanks for this!!!! I needed some Roy in my day and didn’t even realize it!!! ❤️ More Roy Clark please. Cheers 🍻 So says Austin Tx!! 😎🍸
Roy Clark was one of the premier guitar/banjo/mandolin/anything with strings players. It's a song that hits harder the older you get but at any age it gets you in the feels. Rest in peace Roy.
This is one of my favorite songs of all time
When I was a teenager my mother told me at one point that someday the days would get longer and the years would get shorter. I scoffed. Now at 73, she was right. Just wait you ain't seen nothing yet.
Lyrics by the great French song writer and singer Charles Aznavour..
I would love to hear your reaction to "three bells" by the Browns. One of jim ed browns best songs. R.I.P Jim, your music is timeless
Great song Great Artist
Charles Aznavour absolutely nails this great old classic!!
What a beautiful song! It is my favorite of his! And it contrasts with his levity during most performances (which used to apparently control state fright) and it’s very stark! Thank you for playing it!
Love hearing your responses 🤩
Amazing reaction Tasha.
Its on my list of the saddest and most beautiful songs of all time, along with "Honey" by Bobby Goldsboro, The Carnival is Over by The Seekers, I Can't Make You love Me, by Bonnie Raitt, Long Long Time by Linda Ronstadt, and a whole bunch of Elvis songs (What Now My Love, My Boy, Separate Ways, Don't Cry Daddy, You Gave Me a Mountain) Crying by Roy Orbison and It's Over by Roy Orbison.
Love how you break down the lyrics. One day back in 83 I said to my friend let's put the radio on AM maybe we'll hear some Roy Clark and sure enough this beautiful song was playing.
"Metaphor" was the word you were looking for.
Good reaction! Check out Alan Jackson’s song The Older I Get. A positive vibe on getting older.
"Thank God and Greyhound" is another good song from Roy Clark.
Very talented!!
I have found that sometimes the B side was better. This is one of my favorite songs by Roy Clark. He used to co-host a tv show in the 70's called Hee Haw which is is where I first heard this song. Malaguena is a fantastic guitar instrumental by Roy. Your husband might enjoy it. My oldest son, who was born yesterday, celebrated his 50th birthday last month.
I always liked "Thank God and Greyhound""
I have no self love for myself. Were you ever a school teacher? I can listen to you talk all day,as if. Its just you and I in the same room. I'm not sure if you will read this so I'll go.the best of you and yours..keep up the good work.
You need to review the song "Do You Believe This Town" both he and Dean Martin did it and it as relevant now as it was int the 1960s when it came out.
"The unexamined life is not worth living." (Socrates)
Beautiful song! He was so talented!!
A cautionary tale.
Check out “Thank God and Greyhound you’re gone”.
Should have had T with you on this one. He might have gotten something in his eye..❤
Glenn Campbell did a pretty good version of this song.
AT 84 time is a run away train
