One of the saddest songs... ive known this song since my early childhood...cloying though it may be, at 62 years old, it still brings tears to my eyes.
As others have said, no matter how often I hear this song, it still makes me cry. Not for her, but for him (the him in the song, not BG). It’s so hard to get left behind. This is actually the 1st time I’ve seen him in any performance, I just listened to him on the radio. It never occurred to me to wonder what he looked like, lol.
Bobby Goldsboro was an American pop & country singer-songwriter from the 60's-70's. "Honey" was his biggest hit but he had a lot of great songs including "See The Funny Little Clown", "Summer (The First Time)", "It's Too Late", "Little Things", "Too Many People", "With Pen In Hand", "Hello Summertime", "Watching Scotty Grow" etc. Some of his songs were performed by other artists such as Brenda Lee, Dolly Parton, John Denver.
The chorus "and honey I miss you and I'm being good" gives a pretty good hint there that she's gone and he's being good so that he can see her again in heaven
In 1968 when this song was on the radio a lot, my parents were going through a divorce. And although this song is about death, not divorce, it always reduced my mom to sobs. (The other song that did that to her was "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" by Glen Campbell.)
Anytime I heard this song in my youth, I would cry. It reminded me of a friend we lost at a young age. It's one of those beautiful songs that make you cry!
Bobby Goldsboro was a major heart-throb for the women back in the 70s. There was a record (45 rpm) that was pressed into the back of a cereal box that you could cut out and play on your record player. It was high-tech back then.
This is real country am so glad that I can still can watch and listen to these old golden country songs! This song came out the year I lost my mother I was 11 years old and she was 33❤❤❤❤
This was my parents song. My Dad loved to sing it to my mom. They were married almost 39 years. Today would have made it 39 years but sadly he missed it by 2 months. He left us around easter.
Hey wonderful ... The first time he caught her crying, it was just over a movie on TV (late, late show), but the last time, it was because she found out she was dying.
"One day when I was not at home, and she was there all alone, the angels came" That gets me every time. Even as a young teenager, those lyrics struck me when I heard them on the radio. Now, as a widower of 15 years, I know firsthand the sorrow that the song conveys.
The true story of honey according to writer Bobby Russell, Was the tree in his front yard that went from a sampling to a huge tree in a matter of a few years.
1968 Honey by Bobby Goldsboro, Written by the late great Bobby Russell married to Vickie Lawrence from 1972-1974 he also wrote That's The Night That The Lights Went Out In Georgia for her in 1972.
I saw Bobby live in 1973, I think it was, in Arizona. Small, intimate audience. Sat right up and personal with him. He looked exactly like he does in this video. It was great! This has been my favorite song since it first came out way back when! My second favorite song by him is “With Pen in Hand”. Maybe you could react to it. I think you’d like it. It’s like “Honey” only going in the opposite direction to divorce.
For a more upbeat song from him in mid 1960’s try “Little Things”. As a side note Bobby Goldsboro called himself as being accident prone. I remember him talking to Johnny Carson listing all the injuries and accidents he had over the years.
Mt dad used to whistle and sing this around the house in 1968....i finally figured out why....he lost his mother when he was 18. Makes me cry reminscing about the year 1968, the year of this #1 record "Honey", which was a hit for Bobby Goldsboro in the Spring of 1968, spending five weeks at the top of the Billboard Pop Singles Chart. . Mom, dad and younger brother are all gone, I am the only one left. This is about the saddest damned song there is. It could be about losing a daughter, not just a wife...
He's thinking back on all the little things that happened with the love of his life, it's funny/sad/heartbreaking how they become the big things when "the angels came" and then his forever partner is gone.
Sad love songs. “The Carnival is Over” by The Seekers. “I Cav’t Make You Love Me” by Bonni Raitt. “Lon, Long Time” by Linda Ronstadt. “The Last Time I Saw Her Face” by Gordon Lightfoot. “My Boy” by Richard Harris. “Separate Ways” “Don’t Cry, Daddy” “What Now My Love” and “You Gave Me a Mountain” all by Elvis. Beautiful and very sad love songs.
Bobby grew up in my hometown of Dothan, Alabama but he was born 40 miles south in Marianna FL. Bobby use to have his own TV show that ran for 3 years. Bobby started a little band and some how he would travel and open for the great Roy Orbison.
A wonderful song. I remember it from when I was young. This one and "Seasons in the Sun" by Terry Jacks somehow always hit me the same way. Love your response at the key moment
The song is about a young widower who's remembering all the mundane and humorous things his deceased wife did. Those memories of things he might not have reacted to in the best way are now all he has. Such a sad, beautiful song. It sounds corny now, but at the time it was a huge hit.
If you listen carefully to this song (not difficult, especially since Goldsboro's rendition makes the lyrics very clear), you're left with a number of questions. For example, "where love grew up" & "young at heart" may indicate that Honey was not a young 20-something when "the angels came." OTOH, both Bobby Goldsboro & the composer, Bobby Russell, were in their mid- to late 20s when the song was written & released, &, being sung in the 1st person, the song certainly leaves the impression that Honey "went away" at a young age. Were they young star-crossed lovers, or were they at least pushing middle age? With those questions, what can a person do but listen to it again-& again?
Wow, I can't believe you didn't get the song as you were listening to the lyrics .I got the first time hearing it . Back in the med 70s as I was growing up. And I was 7 years old in 1973. Even though it can out in 1968.
"summer the first time" is my fave of his. haunting and melancholic song about an experience from a long time ago. also I think the movie "summer of 42" inspired this song, the movie has a similar plot.
Wayback. I was in high school when this came out, and I've been retired for ten years. I think this was the first 45RPM single that was cut in stereo rather than just mono.
Few songs are sadder. Seasons in the sun is one. Rose's for mama. An obscure Rock a bye baby will rip your heart out. Rockabye, baby, grandpa will sing...
Listen to George Michael , Different corner. I really hope you pay attention, if you have any romance in your heart you will love. If you don't then you hate it. That is for to decide.
Me and my wife have been together for 46years and i can't live with out her because my life would not be worth living,so when she pass away i will end mt life
This song makes me cry every time I hear it. ❤❤❤❤❤
Me too in fact I'm doing it now. 😢
Me too, am thinking of my husband😢
Same here.
One of the saddest songs... ive known this song since my early childhood...cloying though it may be, at 62 years old, it still brings tears to my eyes.
Sad, but still, also a memorial for someone loved, but no longer beside us. My Husband loved this song as much as I loved and still love him ...
As MANY OTHERS: STILL gets me teary-eyed, as well! Bobby had such a great, expressive voice!! HUGS, TASHA!!
As others have said, no matter how often I hear this song, it still makes me cry. Not for her, but for him (the him in the song, not BG). It’s so hard to get left behind. When the song first came out I was a kid I'm 67 years old now. And I just lost my older sister Play the song came out and it still reminds me of her

I've been waiting for you to do this one. I'm 68 now, and it still brings a tear to my eyes.

Bobby lives not far from me in Florida. He’s also a painter. He’s also done things for children with cancer in our area.
This is real country am so glad that I can still can watch and listen to these old golden country songs! This song came out the year I lost my mother I was 11 years old and she was 33❤❤❤❤
Actually closer to "country-pop".
This was my parents song. My Dad loved to sing it to my mom. They were married almost 39 years. Today would have made it 39 years but sadly he missed it by 2 months. He left us around easter.
Try listening to Goldsboro singing ''Summer the first time'' , about the loss of innocence.... a wonderful piece of art...
This is such a beautiful song. Haven’t heard it in years. But I remember when it came out and we replayed it over and over. 😊❤❤😊

This is the very first song that I have memories of ..born in 64 not sure when it was released but it made a lasting impression on me.
The true story of honey according to writer Bobby Russell, Was the tree in his front yard that went from a sampling to a huge tree in a matter of a few years.
On my list of saddest and most beautiful songs of all time.
Always been one of my favorites

Love your family and friends today, not tomorrow. Tell them every day whenever possible.

I have always loved this song. Having no idea this would happen to me when I lost my sweet wife 😢
Me too, but my husband of 40 years, who passed 5 years ago.😢
She died 3 years ago, played this at her funeral and still gets me.

A masterpiece ❤❤❤❤❤
There was an answer song by a woman naned Margaret Lewis, from the late wife's point of view called Honey (I Miss You Too)
Great song, yes sad! Big hit in 1968. He had a very good upbeat song mid 60s Little Things. He went the route of country music later on. .
This was my Daddy’s song for my Mama!!!
My youngest grandchild is slightly older than I was when this first came out!
He's thinking back on all the little things that happened with the love of his life, it's funny/sad/heartbreaking how they become the big things when "the angels came" and then his forever partner is gone.
Let's go from sad to happy and hear "Scotty's Song" about his son😘
And Butterfly for Bucky to go from sad to happy all in the same song.
I think he had another one called Watching Scotty Grow!
On a long bus ride in Mexico driver played Spanish version over and over. I'm also from Ala
I remember this song from the radio. I was 5 or 6.

The first time I heard this song, my mother and I were standing in the kitchen, before i went to school, we both started crying
Another sad song would be Mac Davis Who ever finds this I love you.
I was a kid when this song came out and I didn’t get it. I’ve been widowed for 3 years and I get it now.😢

Not corny then, not corny now.
another sad one tasha. but none the less a great one. thanks a lot.

Yeah, thanks Robert for bringing us all down! 😄😄
That was the plan 👍😉😂

I really need to take my medication before listening to some of these songs. Another good one from the same era is "Rocky" by Dickie Lee.
If you want another tear jerker, try Wildfire by Michael Martin Murphy.
Few songs are sadder. Seasons in the sun is one. Rose's for mama. An obscure Rock a bye baby will rip your heart out. Rockabye, baby, grandpa will sing...
To me , too!
Leonid & Friends
Sad ..

This song is so sad that I couldnt listen to it. That was 50 odd years ago.
Nothing's changed.
Tearjerker
Got tissues?
One of the saddest song I know and what a story telling it was.
Hot Chocolate Emma

Me and my wife have been together for 46years and i can't live with out her because my life would not be worth living,so when she pass away i will end mt life
My father cant listen to this song since mom passed away in 2020. It just destroys him, because it reminds him of his beloved wife.
I used to think this song was corny. Now that most of my family members have died, I don't think it's so corny anymore.
Have you done Dickie Lee strange things happen in this world
Wasn't he married for a short time to comiendien Vicky Lawrence?
She cry’s a Lot lol lol lol
She killed herself. So sad, beautiful song.
It was a nice song, but got so overplayed that it became a joke.
Yeah, It's like she had cancer and died or something. :(
What a horrible song. So depressing.
A life song.... so good, and sooo sad.
She died.
