Like Rocky, it really isn't a sports movie. Rocky is a love story with a boxer in it. Field of Dreams is about faith, forgiveness, closure and family, wrapped in baseball.

This movie makes me cry no matter how many times I see it. Each time I say, I've seen this too many times for it to make me cry; I end up desperately glancing around for a close tissue! Glad you both enjoyed it so much! As for Ray Liotta - yes, good-looking, with beautiful eyes. Not to forget about Kevin Costner - very easy on the eyes This movie started my decades-long crush on him!

Great reaction to my favorite baseball and dreams movie.
Mark and the rest of Annie's family couldn't see because they had stopped dreaming. Losing the ability to hope and dream kills a lot of the joy in life. Terrence had lost his ability to dream until meeting Ray and hearing this weird story which awakened a strange and forgotten ability to hope and start to dream in him. And when Mark was hoping so desperately that his niece was okay after her fall he got back in touch with his ability to dream and then even he could see the players.
And, in Mark's defense, both Mark and Ray had a hold on Karen and they both were responsible for her fall. And after this experience Mark was hardcore in the "Keep the field, Ray. You gotta keep the field." camp. 😀
Dwier Brown, the actor who played John Kinsella, wrote a book called "If You Build It..." which is an excellent book about the movie, its message, and some people he met and conversations he had about dads, baseball, and life because he was in this movie and how being in it has shaped his life.
Lost my dad to the Big C a couple of years ago when I was 53, and it made the end of the movie more emotional for me. He moved back to the town where we all lived (or, in my case, lived kinda near) for the last few months of his life so we could make some more memories and have some more visits with him. I am glad that our many and manifold arguments in the past were well in the past and forgotten during the last months we had with him. He got to see my little sister's 12 year old daughter play basketball with her school team, and she also played a bit for him on the trombone she played in band, the very same trombone he played on in high school and when he marched with his high school band in President Kennedy's Inaugural Parade. So, in a way, we got that last catch with him before he left us, and I am thankful for that. 🙂 I wish everyone could be so lucky.
But keep dreams alive everyone. Even if they change through the years, just keep dreaming. 🙂

I look forward to playing catch with my dad again. That little girl was my mom in 1932 ... watching the relatives playing baseball, on Memorial Day, across from the old cemetery.

"If you build it, he will come."
Fun Fact: Although his character delivers the movie's signature speech praising baseball, in real life James Earl Jones hates baseball. Despite this, he would play another baseball enthusiast four years later in The Sandlot (1993).
Location Location Fact: After the filming was completed, the family that owned the farm kept the field and added a small hut with inexpensive souvenirs for sale. Visitors are (as far as I know) free to come to the field and play baseball as they please between April and November.
Baseball Camp Fact: Ray Liotta had no baseball experience and batted right-handed, although "Shoeless" Joe Jackson was a lefty. Phil Alden Robinson allowed Liotta to bat with his right, but still put him through several weeks of extensive training with University of Southern California baseball coach and former Brooklyn Dodger Rod Dedeaux in order to be convincing as one of the sport's greatest hitters. Liotta eventually developed a good swing. The scene where he hits a line-drive straight back at Kevin Costner actually happened. Costner's fall on the mound was real, and although it was a surprise, he stayed in character.

I saw this in a theatre when it first came out. I cried then and I still cry when I see it. There have been a lot of really great baseball movies and Kevin Costner has starred tin three of them: Field of Dreams, Bull Durham, and For Love of the Game.

Great reaction !!! But the two best baseball tear-jerkers of all time ??? 1. "AMAZING GRACE AND CHUCK " The final scene had the actors, the extras and the film crew all crying. As well as everyone in the theater. 2. "PRIDE OF THE YANKEES" The story of Lou Gehrig. Not sure even 85 years later if this was a baseball movie or a love story of this great American legend.

My high school banner is hanging behind them as they are talking about book burning. I live 45 minutes from the field, I have "had a catch" with my 2 sons and my 2 stepsons on that field. It got too comercialized over the years and I stopped going.

I think that the reason that they cant leave the baseball field is because its the thing that drew them there. like a talisman. they can only exist within its magic. that's just my artistic storytelling answer. there's no rules so it could be because they all have a magic lizard in their pocket and it doesn't like gravel.
