    Our station is 100% Volunteer. The operational volunteers are a dedicated group of firefighters and EMS 'Providers who respond 24/7/365. We are fortunate enough to have volunteers who are able to respond during the day. Our group of volunteers is from all walks of life. Business owners, journalists, farmers, teachers and college students to answering as many calls as they can.
    For a call in our first due, we usually get our first due engine and depending on the call, the tower or rescue engine out the door within 4 minutes.

      No. Take a better look. I was thinking the same thing but not all of those windows are truck bays. If you look close you can see that the mid section is office space and only one "bay" on the other side has driveway access. Past that it's grass and the rest of the building is used for gym or rec hall or something. I'm not even sure that bay on the other side is a truck bay. They just designed the building to have a "balanced" look across the front. I think I'll hop over to Google earth and see if I can get a "street view".

    The community is blessed to have so many available volunteers. I am guessing Saturday or Sunday. Monday thru Friday = Work, School, Family Obligations. This is why volunteers take 3 members to equal one career member serving 24 hours per day. Secondly, volunteers can read and write. There is no reason why volunteers cannot commit to being available for those incidents that only require a single resource. We don't need the entire fleet and department on a BLS Medical Aid or Rubbish Fire. This does not mean you are totally stuck if something happens in your life. It means picking up the phone and having someone else cover in your place.

    It is not about "clearing the house for ever fire" It's about clearing the house when you need to on a working fire or other larger incident. It's about being there when your community or when your needed for mutual aid partners need you. It's not about running in to the station on every call. This looks good. What is most important is having enough people when you really need them and having the training to be safe and keep the public safe. I am sure you mean well though.

      It shouldn't be just on working fire boxes it should be like this on every call regardless if it's a c.o. detector activation ,auto alarm , water flow alarm ,manual pull station ,odor etc... not just people who show up when there is a confirmed job... people like that who never show and cause the same 6 to 8 people to show up for 95 percent of the runs combined with ever increasing training hour requirements is causing burnout and leading to even lower numbers of volunteers and making retention all but impossible

      As a volunteer it’s hard to count on how many people are going to respond, and when they’ll get there.
      So sometimes it’s smart to send out your appliance as soon as you have a decent enough crew because you aren’t sure who’s coming and you know you’re needed asap at that job.
      They seemed to have a good turnout anyway, and you can always park appliances up and just use the man power on board for other taskings, it doesn’t hurt to have the extra trucks that’s for sure.

  • @FirstAlarm59

    I don't know the complete setup of the county fire system, where this hose company is, but I'm a strong believer that all volunteer companies should always have either volunteers, or paid staff at the station at all times. At least enough to man one suppression unit and, maybe, one ambo. Hopefully, the county has enough staffing 24/7. When structures are on fire, and people are trapped, every minute counts. I'm not putting down the volunteer system, I was once a volunteer. Many large counties have volunteers, but even a volunteer company should have live-in staff for the evenings/nights, and paid staffing during the day, if they don't have enough volunteers.

    • @thisissparta789789
      @thisissparta789789 2 года назад

      Pretty much every firehouse in New Castle County has at least a 2-man ambulance crew in station consisting of either volunteers or paid EMS/fire personnel employed by the volunteer fire departments. Many have a full fire crew in station at almost all times, though home response still exists for additional apparatus. In this case, Middletown already had both an engine crew and an ambulance crew in station when the call came in.

      Fred Flinstone here in NY, we really shouldn’t POV to calls unless you’re exterior. We wait for people to get on the truck. If we don’t get a full crew within a couple minutes whoever is on the truck goes. It’s not our job to wait for you to take your sweet time. We get out as soon as we can. On a fire alarm for my department during the day, the first engine out the door yields 4-6 people, and the ladder gets 1-3 people out if that many. We’ve only filled our rescue 1 time ever on a wreck at which we were canceled upon arriving. Where do you come from? Your area should be filling trucks. Not going straight to the scene.

    • @ShakeNBake4200
      @ShakeNBake4200 4 года назад

      @@centralnewyorkresponses7887 It depends, if you're out in a rural area and you know that you're getting enough people to take trucks then hell yeah, have that brush out the firehouse as first due especially on a possible structure fire. It can get there faster than an engine, quint, rescue, or ladder can so it can get there first and give a proper size up for crews coming in. Some departments do have SCBA's on there brushes so that can also help when they get there too if someone is possibly trapped inside. Time is of the essence especially nowadays in the Fire Service.

    • @centralnewyorkresponses7887

      LoSTheSpirit in My department if we can’t get a truck close to the house we will just pull a 300 foot speedlay to it. Our brush truck does not carry structural gear. I get what you mean though. Every department has their own procedure.

We don’t care what other people think, we just think about what we can do to remedy the situation in which we are responding to. As long as we get members to show up! Volunteers are getting more and more scarce.
