  • On November 8th, 1965, the 173rd Airborne Brigade on Operation Hump, War Zone D in Vietnam were ambushed by over 1200 V.C. Forty-eight American soldiers lost their lives that day. Severely wounded and risking his own life, Lawrence Joll, a medic, was the first living black man since the Spanish-American War to receive the United States Medal of Honor for saving so many lives in the midst of battle that day. Our friend, Nialls Harris, retired 25 years, United States Army (the guy who gave Big Kenny his top hat) was one of the wounded who lived. This song is his story. Caught in the action of 'kill or be killed' - 'greater love hath no man to lay down his life for a friend.'

Thank you John, Kenny, and everyone else responsible for this. Truly we could tell this was special to all of you in the writing of this song and the making of this film. And a special aloha and thanks to my battle buddy and right hand man, Morris Niles Harris, whom I had the pleasure of serving with many years later in Germany with the 1st Infantry Division (Forward), I salute you. With fond memories on this Veterans Day, I toast you, our fellow veterans and our fallen. Emery Tyacke

Thank you for giving at least a small part of honor and respect to those of the 173rd. This ungrateful Country to this day still has not given those brave men the honor and respect they as well as all those who served in Nam that they so rightfully earned and deserve.

My great-uncle was there with him. Unfortunately... He didn't make it back. But he died for what he believed in. At any rate.. Thank you again.

As a daughter to a man that served in Vietnam, you have all my respect. Both my parents were in the US Army. My father was in Vietnam as a Cobra pilot, my mother was personnel in Desert Storm and I was in OIF. I am fortunate to live in the DC area (only cause I can visit the Memorials). I know that I will never understand what my parents went through, just like they will never understand what I went through, but we are very proud to stand together as prior Military members that served our country to the best of our ability. May all the ones that dont make it home rest in peace.

I'd heard this song before, but this is the first time I've seen the documentary. I'm a combat vet and was in Vietnam in 69 and 70 with the 4th Infantry Division. I was also wounded in an ambush, so this brought back a flood a memories. Thanks to everyone who worked on this project, it meant a lot to me and I'm sure to the families who's sons and husbands didn't make it home. God Bless you and those who served.

unortuntly with the military they only like to document the sucess and not the defeats/ failures. but its also the reason why we continue to make the same mistakes over and over in combat. i served in iraq and would here about failed missions and ambushes. we would have debriefings rarley on what not to do. and yet the next day told to the very thing that got a fellow soldier killed. then only to get hit and either have injuries and at times deaths. nevr made any sense to me and most others. but its the order. politcal corectness and selfeshness is entrenched in the military these days. most will do anything to make sure thye get the promotion or medal, even if they dont deserve it. this all got real bad with the troop surge in 08, to the point the military started purging ranks in 2010. but alot of good soldiers where let go, for soldiers who played the politics. bottom line is we will never learn and they rarley will document failures.

Thank you for your service Niles I wish more of our Vietnam vets would get the chance to go back and possibly heal a little especially for my daddy he was a door Gunnar in the Air Force and was shot down 4 times and he is full of shrapnel but continued to go back till all American troops were brought home due to survivors guilt which he still suffers today. Thank you for your service you all deserved a ticker tape parade when you returned home but our country had a lapse in judgement in sorry.

I had 2 uncles that fought in Vietnam. They came home changed men, one never talked about it and the other did when he was drinking. They both died now RIP. My husband's uncle died in Vietnam, 1967, we have the memories. They were brave men and they never received the respect or honor they deserved for serving their country so selflessly.. And for that I thank you all and a thanks to Big and RIch for doing this.

This resonated with me and every other veteran everywhere I might be from a different country and a different war but it still hit a nerve, and I wasn’t even in combat, not properly like an infantryman, but goosebumps and a little tear. Respect. RIP, Lest We Forget. 😔👍🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

My dad was in Vietnam, not sure what year it was. They pulled him out, he was a sharp shooter, they put him at Guantanamo Bay Cuba (USMC). He never talked about Vietnam or Guantanamo Bay Cuba. He said, " The shit he seen would make a person cringe." He would not talk about it. He did tell me he hated leaving his brothers behind in the jungle to go to Guantanamo. He told me he would rather be in Nam then Cuba. He said, "The Jungle was friendlier." I don't know what he seen or what y'all seen but my hat goes off to y'all for your service.

Thank you Big & Rich for this Documentary. I know how much this helped many veterans find there way in life after so much negative thing's that happen to those that served our country when called upon. Growing up my hero was my Dad a veteran who served during Korea, 3 uncles, 4 cousins one is on the wall W15, 63 row, 5th name over from the Vietnam war, I only know of 6 members from WWII, along with my papaw who was the master electri. who armed the nuc's that were dropped on Japan these were my other hero's along with every man and woman who served our country. I'm proud to come from a military family, I served 15 years, 6 months and 13 days before being medically retired. Again thank you so much for this song along with the documentary.

Nam vet here. I never watch a documentary twice but I did this one. No one can understand unless you were in that environment. No one. Seeing villagers who just wanted to live unmolested, their living conditions the same now as then shows some nature of mankind. Being a US soldier in that culture was hard to comprehend.

This is an excellent documentary and a wonderful thing for Big and Rich to do. Many people don't realize that Kris Kristofferson was an airborne ranger and a commissioned helicopter pilot in the Army's 8th Infantry Division (A) who served in Germany during the Vietnam era, so there's no question about his support for our troops. I had no idea that Big and Rich were such strong supporters as well though.
Thank you so much to all Vietnam veterans who served when so many others did everything they could to avoid going. Thanks especially to those vets of the 173rd "Herd" who were involved in that horrific battle of 8 November 1965. Our nation owes each of you a Dept that can never be repaid. God bless you all! All the “older” guys were ‘Dad’ or ‘Pops’ or something to reflect age. Not enough months or couple of years to make any difference, but this was just how things were in ‘Nam. Bunch of kids, barely out of HS and college age kids, suffering over there in that. My Gunny pulled three tours from ‘67-‘70 and was 17 when he went in. His uncle signed for him to go. He was barely shaving.

I am speechless. Speechless at the sacrifice of these Americans. And speechless that 6 people felt the need to dislike this video. I believe in watching my language, so to summarize, i realize that my shotgun fits 6 shells. New kneecaps are cheap this time of year. This video makes me see beyond a song I have always loved, the true story beyond it. Thank you to all those who have sacrificed without thanks. The majority may forget, but the minority will always cherish. These soldiers fought.
