How to Dry Wood Fast

  • Learn how to dry wood fast in the microwave. Microwave drying works pretty well for smaller projects and if you are turning wooden bowls.
    Fresh green wood can contain 30-40% water, so it will shrink and lose a lot of weight. If you can remove material before you put it in the microwave, you should. Remember that the wood also will twist and warp so don't put your finished piece in there.
    I would say this is relatively safe as long as you keep the heating to around 1 minute and cool the wood down for 5-10 min. Between each cycle (and always keep an eye on the microwave when heating.)

    i want to make coasters,i have green cedar and pine how should i dry it before i start? lead me thru the process.her dad is asking

    • @DieterSchneider
      @DieterSchneider  7 лет назад +2

      Cut the coasters first. then dry. Cut a little thicker than they need to be, because they will probably warp and shrink a little. Finish with a sander to make them flat again.

      do i just sit them out or microwave ,how long does pine keep seeping,im retired from retail all this is greek,and how will i know its good and dry

    • @chellejeff
      @chellejeff 7 лет назад +1

      I've done a lot of coasters lately and have had really good luck with the conventional oven. I cut them to just under half inch, then lay them out in the oven set at 130*. Leave them in for 12-24 hours depending how thick and wet they are. Haven't broken one yet. I run mine through a drum sander afterwards to flatten and smooth them.

      Mate, it is a serious question. How long did you keep that piece of wood in that microwave? In what degree and .....??!! The title doesn’t match the whole video although you did a nice job. God bless your child.

    That's a clever idea! Can you give some specifications? How many W has the microwave? Did you put it on "medium" or less?
    Thanks for sharing.

    • @DieterSchneider
      @DieterSchneider  7 лет назад +3

      I just put it on full power. 1 minute in the microwave, then 4-5 min to cool down. Repeat for 8-20 times, depending on the wood thickness. Measure the weight for each time, and when the weight gets stable, it's pretty dry.

    • @hansdegroot8549
      @hansdegroot8549 7 лет назад +1

      I didn't expect you put it on pull power. Thanks for explaining. What kind of tree/wood was it?

    Hi there, I have a question, I have some wood rounds about 12” in diameter and 2” thick. Some of them are ok but some are turning grey in the middle. Are they rotting?? Or can I sand this off?
