SERIOUSLY after i watched this movie..i respect the culture and the music...im apache so i really like this culture and what it stands for!....and the music to this movie is sooooooo good!!!!!
I have maori and Blackfoot blood 💪🏽 I know nothing of my Blackfoot people or their culture but I have a good understanding and connection with my maori people.
A great piece of music. Reminds me of drink parties that I went to when I was younger. A group of friends that I had who are Maori used to invite me to parties and everyone had a boot load of beer. There would always be a guitar being passed around. This music reminds me of the atmosphere
@hawaiian96chence "Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini" is a proverb, or in Maori "whakatauki." The translation is: "A warrior's strength is not his alone, but that of many warriors." There's a lot of ways it can be interpreted, but it basically talks about unity: how working together can bring more success than working alone and also how everyone's contribution counts. That's what I think anyway.
when i first saw this movie in 1995 I was absolutely stunned. It was so hard hitting and graphic and while I still think its a very good movie I think it has lost some of its potency with time. I recently watched the movie peaches which i had been avoiding because i was told it was deeply troubling. I must say i watched the majority of the movie mouth open. Its not for the weak and will leave you troubled for days.
Many greetings from Croatia to Maori people of New Zeland, from one Croatian,Dalmatian Tarara. You are still warriors in every meaning of that word, and you will never stop being.Tarara!
I absolutely love this, bought the soundtrack before I went to the cinema , I think this was played in the trailer (hence why I bought it) loved the movie too, absolutely fantastic 👍
This is one of those songs where, you even hum the first few notes of the theme, everyone knows where that song comes from and they'll start talking about the movie, or they'll quote it.
Kia Ora from Chicago! I read all 3 of the Alan Duff books and actually have 1 that was autographed by him, he was delighted to hear that he had a fan 1/2 way around the globe, Thanks to those books I became fascinated with Maori lore and culture and hope to get to NZ before my time expires.
I was 4 when this was released. I wish I could have seen it in the theatre at the time of its release; that would have been something. I kept bugging my parents to take me to it, because I remember it being all over the news and it looked awesome, but of course they didn't and I had to see it on TV in my room with the volume turned low like all the other kids.
Native people all around the world walk a similar struggle. A lot of this movie hit really close to home & I reckon our mob in Australia got a lot in common with Maori.
In my early 20's working in Justice, when I saw this one Friday night. Apart from loving the strength of that tune and the associations. We had no compass back then, toxic masculinity was a norm, something you portrayed with your friends. But to yourself if you were a good person (Represented through Grace). Knew was wrong with no teaching. The teachings here transcend cultures and creed. It saddens me, that this "Hard left", problem solving is still so prevalent, in our society. Call it Woke, call it what you want (Usually means you are hiding something). I have many times had my life on the line, nature is a better caller, but my peers have done the same through the years. Why do some think they are any different, especially if it is passed on. :) :( To each their own. This piece of music is what I like to call NZ Blues. :) One day we may find piece in our society. Nothing is worse than when you are at war, with your fellow countryman, through no action of your own. But your forebears. :( :) I myself would say grow up all, you are still only live once. :( :) I guess it all comes down to what you accept as being wrong. :(
@timGsims Thanks for that.....awesome track and an awesome film. Friend of mine from NZ by thr family name of Tikao says that growing up around those times you kinda got used to seeing that type of thing......love the maori pride....deep people
I remember trying to see this movie 3 times at the movies & everytime it was booked out, Finally we got to see it & there wasn't a dry eye in the theatre, I guess it hit home to everyone, not just moaris. The acting is a bit dodby but one of the most powerful movies of it's time.
@ajbondi : I remember seeing this movie when I was younger. I was stupid and didn't understand its true depth. Even so, it touched me back then. Even now, I feel it more. This movie is truly one of the most powerful movies of all time.
Amazing tune from possibly one of the most stomach-turning but well-made films I've seen... not including grisly silly horror flicks, the Kitchen scene shocks like nothing else. Gonna have this in my car though, and I'll try to forget coloassal wife-beating pricks:)
Thanx for postin this song - lost the CD long ago, Saw it in Aucks when it came out - people cryin and yellin at actors on the screen-others were leavin couldnt take it anymore, people talking loudly at each other about scenes - no one could look at each other when leaving the theatre - powerful thing images. GGI in the background from Pap - and you 'Penny-divers' from ' Waka' I can still see you whanau - main reason for goin to see it - wonder how many wahine and kidz got a hidin that night???
what is the name of the song in the movie where the guy who beat up four guys at the bar played in the record machine interrupting the lady on stage just before Jake beat his ass? it sounded like a instrumental old school reggae song
Still brings a shiver down the spine the music and the film
This guitar is like a scream for a human dignity. Beautiful !

Great movie has a true depiction of the life of people in New Zealand everything was accurate, I’d rate this film a easy 10/10!

Man he hit the proverbial nail right on the head with this. Haunting, just brilliant. R.I.P
Amazing guitar work, and great movie. Idk about anyone else but I hear the style of Jimmy mixed in with this guitarist work. Great job !
Saw it in the cinema in 94, one of the best movies ever! Still strong in 2022 🤟🤟
😡👊👅💪👍
Tama Renata passed away on 4 November 2018. RIP
